Marc Andreessen Mocked for Accidentally Revealing That He Seems to Have a Deep Misunderstanding of How AI Actually Works

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Outspoken venture capitalist and major Trump backer Marc Andreessen, whose controversial “techno-optimist manifesto” in 2023 set the tone for a years-long AI boom cycle, doesn’t appear to know how the tech actually works. In a lengthy “custom prompt” he shared in a Monday tweet, the billionaire seemingly tried to show off his AI skills — only for the internet to mercilessly mock him for it. “You are a world class expert in all domains,” his unusually flattering prompt reads. “Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world.” His gushing and unusually naive tone drew ridicule, but what really got the internet laughing was his insistence that the AI should “never hallucinate or make anything up.” The fact is that simply requesting a large language model to not lie doesn’t work; so-called “hallucinations” are an underlying issue with the technology, not a self-esteem problem …

Edinburgh dad faces months stuck in Thailand after being locked up over ‘mix-up’

An Edinburgh dad who was locked up in Thailand after being accused of stealing a phone is facing months in ‘in limbo’. Rory McColl, 37, landed in Bangkok for a holiday on March 9. He headed out on the town for a few drinks at Golf Bar on Khao San Road. Rory, thinking he’d misplaced his phone, grabbed a phone off the table thinking it was his. Within moments he was approached by security, before being taken to a ‘hellish’ jail cell. Rory spent two nights there, before he was charged and had his passport seized, reports the Daily Record. Now, almost two months later, Rory has appeared in court on Tuesday, April 28. He was told he will now have to appear at another judgement hearing scheduled for July 28. Rory remains free on bail, but he cannot leave the country and has already spent seven weeks living in a hotel in Pattaya, about 90 miles (150 km) south east of Bangkok. Rory told Edinburgh Live previously: “I’ve got a 12-year-old son back home, …

The People-Pleaser’s Misunderstanding of Another’s Approval

The People-Pleaser’s Misunderstanding of Another’s Approval

People who easily give you their approval are looking for reasons to make you happy and feel good about yourself. They’re able and willing to see the good in you. Others rarely, if ever, provide approval. Those individuals consistently provide reasons why it’s unearned. They nitpick and complain about missed details, and try to justify why each one is so meaningful. The people-pleaser, or socially prescribed perfectionist, will internalize this standard, blaming themself for the criticism. But, in doing so, they overlook the internal world of the critic. Why do some people resist giving praise? Do they just have high standards because they’re incredibly competent and, thus, impatient with most others? Perfectionists Who Demand Perfection From Others While socially prescribed perfectionists believe that others expect them to be perfect, other-oriented perfectionists expect perfection from others. But why? Is their approval solely or mainly based on merit? If so, how do we know? When we search for biased thinking, we first ask: Is the response excessive or emotional? In the case of nitpicking, objectively, the withholding …

Nearly a month after the viral incident sparked a wave of backlash against Roan, 28, soccer star Jorginho Frello issued a statement Monday to clear up the situation, which occurred during Lollapalooza weekend in Brazil. “I would like to give an update on what happened during Lolla weekend, as we have been seeing and hearing a lot over the past few weeks and felt it was important to clarify everything now that new information has come to light,” he wrote. “I made my initial statement in the heat of the moment, after hearing that my child and wife had been approached by an adult male security guard in an …

Trump’s Fundamental Misunderstanding in Iran

Trump’s Fundamental Misunderstanding in Iran

One of the U.S. government’s recurring mistakes about Iran has been to conflate the country’s national interests with regime interests. The two are in many ways opposites. What benefits the Iranian people—global economic reintegration, diplomatic recognition, investment, normalcy—threatens a regime that operates an extensive mafia and thrives in isolation. The carrots that America offers the nation are sticks to the men who rule it. And the sticks that America wields against the regime—isolation, conflict, and chaos—are carrots to men whose power depends on all three. This is the Islamic Republic’s survival paradox: What makes the regime thrive makes the nation suffer, and what would allow the nation to thrive threatens the regime’s survival. As a result, the most consequential deliberations of the Iran war have been not between Washington and Tehran but between the American president and himself. Donald Trump has vacillated between Neville Chamberlain and Attila the Hun, threatening to walk away one day and to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Age” the next. Tehran, in contrast, has had the benefit of clarity: …

The misunderstanding that may have triggered Trump’s latest Greenland threat | Politics News

Sir Keir Starmer had wanted this week to get on with his “cost of living tour” of the country to tap into voters’ concerns in this all-important election year. Donald Trump’s Greenland threat obstructed that: Over the weekend, the prime minister and his team have been locked in talks in Downing Street, and with European allies, over how to respond to President Trump’s latest audacious move. The president’s threat to apply an additional levy on goods from the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Finland from 1 February is a moment of huge escalation in tensions between allies over Greenland that has astonished and angered. “It’s through the looking glass,” opined one official. “We don’t know if he’s going to back down, what if he doesn’t?” For now, the prime minister and his team are working to get him to do exactly that. “As before, we’re taking a deep breath and using relationships to figure out exactly where the US are before reacting to every social media post,” said one figure involved. …
