Mitchell Rales Gifts $116 M. to National Gallery for Art

When the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., launched Art Across the Nation last spring, it wasn’t clear how long the initiative to lend artworks from its collection to regional American museums would last. At the time, the NGA—with financial support from billionaire art collector and museum trustee Mitchell Rales—committed to lend up to ten artworks to ten partner institutions in in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Utah, and Washington, covering expenses related to travel, installation, insurance, and marketing. Related Articles Now, Rales has stepped up with an additional $116 million donation to endow Art Across the Nation in perpetuity. (Rales and his brother, Steven Rales, founded the science and technology company Danaher Corporation in 1984.) Rales has been collecting contemporary art since the 1980s, much of which makes up the collection at Glenstone, a private museum in Potomac, Maryland, that Rales founded with his then-wife, Emily Wei Rales, in 2006. The gift is timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of America. “I have long admired …

The Real-Life Diet of World’s Strongest Man, Mitchell Hooper, Who Is Putting Nine Plates on the Squat Rack

The Real-Life Diet of World’s Strongest Man, Mitchell Hooper, Who Is Putting Nine Plates on the Squat Rack

GQ: How did you initially take an interest in powerlifting? Mitchell Hooper: The interesting part of that story is that I did my undergraduate in human kinetics. I worked as the head strength and conditioning coach with a professional basketball team. Then, I found that relatively meaningless in terms of sport results. So, I applied and got into a master’s of clinical exercise physiology at the University of Sydney. When I got into that, since I’d always been active, I thought there’s three things you ask people to do when you’re exercising them: that’s to lose weight, to get fit, and to get strong. Those are really three things that, if you can do that, you’re going to be reasonably healthy long-term. I started by losing weight. I lost 100 pounds, stepped on a bodybuilding stage, then I ran three marathons. Just in the process of getting strong, I found guys who did powerlifting. That took me towards powerlifting contests, which eventually evolved into Strongman. And I had no idea how good I was going …

EastEnders pictures reveal Mitchell family reunion as Grant returns

EastEnders pictures reveal Mitchell family reunion as Grant returns

Walford’s prodigal son and original hard man Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) is returning to EastEnders later this month. Kemp last slipped on Grant’s leather jacket in February 2025 as part of the BBC soap’s 40th anniversary celebrations, when he briefly returned amid concerns about brother Phil’s (Steve McFadden) deteriorating mental health. He also shared scenes with Paul Bradley, who plays Grant’s old school mate Nigel Bates. Living with young-onset dementia, Nigel was offered a home at Grant’s villa in Portugal, though he chose to stay living with Phil. It was revealed earlier this year that, with Nigel’s health rapidly deteriorating, he would be lured back to support him once more. Spoilers for next week’s episodes show that estranged son Mark Fowler (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) is the one to put in the call to Grant, despite Sam’s (Kim Medcalf) reluctance to see her brother. The forthcoming episodes will be the first time Mark comes face-to-face with his father, having learned the truth about his parentage in 2016. Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) will come face-to-face with son Mark …

EastEnders’ Nicola Mitchell issues shock ultimatum to Penny Branning in BBC iPlayer release

EastEnders’ Nicola Mitchell issues shock ultimatum to Penny Branning in BBC iPlayer release

**Warning: Contains major spoilers for the episode airing on Tuesday 31st March which is currently available on BBC iPlayer** Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) was left with a big decision to make as another character learned of her pregnancy bombshell in Tuesday’s (31st March 2026) EastEnders. The young mum-to-be was shocked when told that she may have conceived weeks before getting together with boyfriend Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota), who currently believes he’s the father. When Penny told cousins Lauren Beale (Jacqueline Jossa) and Oscar Branning (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) that she slept with Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) on the day he set off for rehab late last year, and so the baby could be his, Lauren urged her not to bury her head in the sand. But rather than taking a paternity test, Oscar thought it was best to leave things as they were, much to Lauren’s disapproval. At her market stall, Penny was flustered when Vinny’s mum Suki (Balvinder Sopal) approached with her wife Eve Panesar-Unwin (Heather Peace), making a sincere effort to apologise for her recent …

Joni Mitchell Calls Mark Carney a Blessing

Joni Mitchell Calls Mark Carney a Blessing

Legendary folk singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell made a rare public appearance in Canada at the Juno Awards on Sunday night, where she received a lifetime achievement award. Canadian-born Mitchell appeared on stage at her country’s music awards alongside the country’s prime minister, Mark Carney, whom she praised. “I’m so glad to be back in Canada. This man is a blessing. You guys are so fortunate,” she added in tribute to Carney while he was at her side on stage in Hamilton, Ontario. Mitchell, who lives in Los Angeles, added in a note of contrast: “I’m living in the States and you know what’s happening there.” The legendary musician while on stage also recalled a decade earlier when she “had a (brain) aneurysm, which changed my life. Oddly, for the better. I went into a coma, which helped me to quit smoking. And my house filled up with the most wonderful nurses. I was, on the road with men for years and years; now I live with a house full of women. So my life …

Add LOL: Last One Laughing UK to your watchlist You’re not a stand-up, so was it hard facing off with comedians on this series? I suppose in a way it might have made it easier for me, because I’ve done more comedy in situations where no one laughs. You know, a show like Peep Show – no one’s laughing. And that’s no reflection on the script. Did you have any tactics? I did consider trying to contract diarrhoea, because I thought desperately trying not to s**t yourself is quite a good way of not being amused by anything. Who are your comedy heroes? I was obsessed with Monty Python. I loved Blackadder. I used to have tapes of The Goon Show. I loved Peter Cook. I also did love Reeves and Mortimer, so it’s amazing to have worked with Bob so much, when I watched him as a teenager growing up. That’s not to make him feel old – he beat me in an arm wrestle yesterday. And I’ve got to have a think about …

EastEnders airs big Sam Mitchell twist – what does it mean for her future?

EastEnders airs big Sam Mitchell twist – what does it mean for her future?

Whenever Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) returns to EastEnders, she seamlessly slots back into the drama like she’s never been away. The character returned at the beginning of December after almost two years away, initially attempting to scam vulnerable Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), who believed she was his step-daughter Clare (Gemma Bissix). Sam later built bridges with brother Phil (Steve McFadden) following their earlier falling out, and confided in ex-lover Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) about her breast cancer diagnosis. Ahead of undergoing a lumpectomy operation, she eventually told their son Ricky (Frankie Day) about her diagnosis. Sam has since been told that she needs to undergo radiotherapy treatment, which she intended to receive at her home in Spain. Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) was diagnosed with breast cancer. BBC/Jack Barns/Kieron McCarron However, in today’s episode, she came to the realisation that being in Walford meant she was able to develop a relationship with Ricky and granddaughter Charli. During an emotional farewell with the Brannings and Charli’s mum Lily Slater (Lillia Turner), Sam said it felt wrong to be …
