This $30 motion sensor ignores your pets but catches intruders

Home security is a crucial aspect of setting up a smart home. You don’t need a smart home to have a good security system. But, if you have a smart home, it’s a good idea to include some form of security aspects that you’re able to look at while you’re not home. It can provide you with peace of mind to know your home is safe and secure. There are different levels of security that you can incorporate in your home. While you don’t need to opt for a laser grid that you’ve seen in films like Ocean’s Twelve or Entrapment, you can still get some good motion detectors or sensors to alert you if something is going on at your residence when you aren’t there. One that I personally employ is a Ring Alarm Motion Detector and it has some great features that I’ve enjoyed for years. Related This $15 smart home gadget gives me more peace of mind than a security camera I use it for a lot of reasons. My home is …

Samsung Earbuds App Treats Motion Sickness With Deep, Soothing Sound

Samsung Earbuds App Treats Motion Sickness With Deep, Soothing Sound

Most people have experienced mild motion sickness — perhaps from staring at your phone in the back of an erratic Uber or riding a particularly loopy amusement park ride. It usually passes quickly, but severe cases can be challenging to manage. Samsung now has an app for that. The tech giant’s new Hearapy app for Android uses the headphones you already own to relieve motion sickness with sound. Motion sickness is generally what you get when the signals from your eyes and inner ear don’t jibe with each other, resulting most commonly in dizziness or, in severe cases, nausea, sweats and vomiting. It’s most frequently experienced in cars, on boats and other moving vehicles, but can also be caused by tech, including phones. The disorienting cybersickness, for example, can be brought on by scrolling screens or playing video games or VR.  Frequent or severe motion sickness can be treated with over-the-counter medicine, pressure point therapy, acupuncture, candy or just staring at a fixed point for a while. However, Samsung’s app directly targets and soothes the inner ear by …

Why some people get motion sickness—and others don’t

Why some people get motion sickness—and others don’t

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. A couple of years ago, I found myself traveling along the Drake Passage to Antarctica when our ship encountered a patch of 15-foot-tall swells. Waves were slamming against the exterior of our vessel, causing nauseated passengers to run to their rooms and stay there. By the end of the afternoon, at least two-thirds of us were suffering from motion sickness. The others? To them, it seemed that all of the rocking and rolling was just another fine day at sea. “Everyone is capable of motion sickness,” Dr. Kristen K. Steenerson, a clinical associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine who specializes in inner ear and balance disorders, tells Popular Science. “It’s just that everyone has different thresholds for how much motion exposure is stimulating enough to make them sick.”  For some people, it might be the simple movement of an iPhone camera when FaceTiming with your 83-year-old father. For others, it’ll take the pounding waters of one of …

Motion Capture Workers at 2K Studio Ratify First Union Contract

Motion Capture Workers at 2K Studio Ratify First Union Contract

Motion capture workers employed by the video game company behind NBA 2K and WWE 2K have ratified their first labor contract in a move that union IATSE is calling historic. Workers at 2K’s motion capture studio in Petaluma, CA have unanimously ratified a deal with management at parent company Take-Two Interactive, IATSE announced on Tuesday. The crew union represents stage technicians, engineers, animators and recording and audio specialists at the studio. The new deal establishes wage minimums as well as annual wage increases and bonuses. The contract additionally enshrines work-from-home and leave policies, staffing and subcontracting language and “an enforceable promotions framework,” IATSE stated. The contract also creates guardrails for the use of scanned likeness and artificial intelligence. IATSE international president Matthew Loeb said in a statement that the deal “shows what workers can achieve when they stand together and bargain for the future of their craft.” Loeb added, “These workers made history when they organized, and they have made history again by ratifying the first union contract for motion capture video game workers in …

The Language of Motion: da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man”

The Language of Motion: da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man”

Photograph of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” on display at theGallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy (photo by Luc Viatour) Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” stands at the center of the page, arms and legs outstretched, poised between the finite and the infinite. It is a celebration of the human form, balanced and elegant, inviting us to marvel at its measured, magnificent beauty, capable of thought and action. This sense of balance and proportion in the human form has fascinated thinkers for millennia. People have long sought to understand the order underlying our bodies, trying to capture it in lines, shapes and measurements. Geometry became a way to study not just abstract forms, but the harmony present in life itself—a search for patterns that reflect the elegance we see in a single figure poised between stability and motion. This fascination with proportion and harmony naturally leads to one of humanity’s oldest geometric quests: Can we capture the perfection of the circle in the certainty of a square? Squaring the circle has haunted mathematicians for centuries. The …

UK Green leader backs ‘Zionism is racism’ motion despite outcry – POLITICO

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel on Sunday condemned the motion as “one of the most hateful and racist documents I’ve ever read.” Polanski, the Jewish leader of the eco-populist force, said his support for the motion would depend on the definition of Zionism. “I can give you some different definitions of Zionism and we can talk about whether they’re racist or not,” he told Times Radio. “If we’re talking about the definition that this Israeli government are clearly perpetrating through a genocide in Gaza, then yes, absolutely. That’s racist.” He stressed that any of the party’s more than 195,000 members could put forward a motion, and he will be “listening carefully to the debate,” adding that it isn’t “particularly helpful to have an argument or a debate about labels.” Pushed on whether he would vote for the motion, he said: “I’ll wait to hear the debate, but absolutely, if the definition of Zionism is what is happening right now by the Israeli government, then yes, absolutely, that’s racist and I’ll vote for it.” The by-election …

Motion sensors perform better when attached to loose clothing

Motion sensors perform better when attached to loose clothing

When your arm moves inside a loose shirt, the fabric does not simply follow along. It ripples, folds, and shifts in ways that exaggerate motion. Those subtle distortions, long treated as measurement errors, may actually carry more useful information than the movement of the body itself. That idea sits at the center of new research from King’s College London, published in Nature Communications, which challenges a basic assumption behind modern motion tracking. Sensors do not have to be tight against the skin to work well. In many cases, they perform better when attached to loose clothing. The findings suggest a different future for wearable technology, one that could make health monitoring devices less intrusive while improving accuracy across fields ranging from medicine to robotics. Researchers found that sensors attached to loose fabric predicted and captured human movement with about 40 percent greater accuracy while requiring roughly 80 percent less data than sensors fixed directly to the body. VE Motion electric trailer axles cut truckers’ diesel fuel bills in HALF

Australian company VE Motion has taken the wraps off its first commercially available battery powered trailer system for heavy trucks, offering fleets a low-cost path to electrification that can cut drivers’ fuel use by up to 50%. First seen at TruckShowX in 2024, the VE Motion powered trailer concept is best described as a modular and self-contained e-axle solution that adds a 295 kW (~395 hp) electric motor to new or existing trailers, reducing wear and tear on diesel drivelines while ensuring stronger starts, smoother climbs, and shorter cycle times. And, of course, dramatically reducing fuel use. Why it works E-axle add-on, via VE Motion. The VE Motion unit works a lot like a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), using an electric motor to boost propulsion when it’s most effective and recovering energy with regenerative braking.
