5 common myths about robotic mowers debunked

If you’ve spent your weekends wrestling with a petrol mower or worrying about the impact of your garden maintenance on the environment, you might have considered a robotic alternative – only to be held back by common misconceptions. While rumours of complicated setups and fragile technology persist, the reality of modern autonomous mowing is far more efficient. We’re debunking the biggest myths surrounding robot lawn mowers, to show you how easy it is to achieve a pristine lawn without sacrificing your free time. Myth One: They take ages to install The installation process is as simple as changing your mower’s schedule (Honda UK) Even in large gardens with complex designs, installing the wire for the Honda Miimo is a straightforward process. All you have to do is lay the wire 20 cm within the lawn perimeter and peg it in every 1–2 metres with the simple-to-use pegs that come included with the mower. If you have trees within the lawn or ponds, they can easily be ringed off. Then, all you need to do is …

Robot Mowers Are Actually Good Now

Robot Mowers Are Actually Good Now

Photograph: Simon Hill Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar): This system, also used by self-driving cars, fires out rapid laser pulses to map the terrain in 3D. It enables mowers to cut grass under thick tree canopies or near tall buildings where GPS signals usually fail. AI Vision: Some mowers now employ cameras to recognize lawn areas, borders, and obstacles. Robot mowers with AI vision can potentially avoid stray footballs, cats, other critters, and maybe even pet mess. But they can also be too sensitive, stopping for fallen branches, leaves, or overhanging plants. Some of the top mowers, like the Mammotion I’m currently testing, employ a combination of the last three technologies to map and cut areas accurately, navigate reliably to and from the charging base, and avoid unexpected obstacles. None of them is foolproof. My top pick chewed up a deflated paddling pool, but if you set the sensitivity too high, they leave areas uncut. In addition to finding their way, many of the latest robot mowers are built to handle rough terrain. Not too …

3 Best Robot Lawn Mowers (2026), Tested and Reviewed

Mowers I Am Currently Testing We are just into a new cutting season here, so I haven’t tested these new robot mowers enough to make a full recommendation, but here are my impressions so far. Photograph: Simon Hill Mammotion Luba 3 AWD for $2,399: If this robot mower continues to perform as well as it has in its first week, it will earn a spot above. It is pricey, but the Mammotion Luba 3 AWD can handle relatively rough terrain and steep slopes, and it combines three technologies (GPS, LiDAR, and AI vision) to ensure it can cut larger lawns even where there might be tree cover or other awkward spots. It boasts quiet operation, efficient pathfinding, and leaves a lovely finish. The obstacle avoidance is solid, and it does a decent job around the edges. I also appreciate the manual mowing option, enabling you to cut any problem areas with remote app control. Husqvarna Aspire R6V for £999: I was excited to test this new robot mower from Husqvarna because it is more affordable …

Best lawn mowers including cordless, petrol and electric

Best lawn mowers including cordless, petrol and electric

Having spent a lifetime squeezing and holding drive and motion bars while mowing, Bosch’s cordless Rotak was a revelation: it’s operated via push-button controls built into the height-adjustable handle, making it much less tiring to manoeuvre. Its seven cutting heights are easily interchangeable, but what wins it our top spot is that it stripes your lawn as it goes, courtesy of a plastic roller mounted just behind the cutting deck. It’s effective – even if the straightness of your stripes depends on your powers of concentration. The brushless motor means you’ll never have to replace carbon brushes and they’re also more efficient so the battery charge lasts longer. If you already have a 36-Volt Bosch appliance like a grass trimmer or leaf blower, you can use the battery from that. Otherwise, the sets range from about £125 to £220, depending on the duration. The only quirk I encountered was that the collapsible grass boxes couldn’t hold the full 50 litres advertised. When the “grass full” indicator showed red, there was always lots of empty space …

Ecovacs’ Latest Robot Lawn Mowers Can Run Wire-Free

Ecovacs’ Latest Robot Lawn Mowers Can Run Wire-Free

Robot lawn mowers are becoming more popular, though the market is still developing. At CNET, we’ve tested a number of them, and the ones that stand out most to us are the ones that use wire-free navigation, meaning you don’t need to run wires around your yard to keep them within its boundaries. The new Ecovacs Goat LA3000 and A2000 LiDAR Pro join other wire-free robot lawn mowers like the Eufy E15, allowing you to set them up and start mowing without wires or much physical intervention.  Wire-free setup and navigation  Both models can be set up in a matter of minutes and map automatically, according to Ecovacs.  Ecovacs The A3000 and A2000 LiDAR Pro use wire-free navigation with the company’s HoloScope 360 Dual-LiDAR triple-technology navigation system, which combines laser scanning and 3D mapping for real-time obstacle avoidance. Ecovacs says the system can be set up in under a minute and doesn’t require any external antennas. This also allows it to work at night and during cloudy days, with two-centimeter accuracy during mowing.  The mowers …
