An Exclusive Look at Tyrese Maxey’s Signature New Balance Sneaker

An Exclusive Look at Tyrese Maxey’s Signature New Balance Sneaker

Every signature shoe has to cater to the specific needs of the signature athlete who’ll be wearing it. Aesthetics aside, what were you prioritizing in terms of performance? I’m somebody who plays extremely fast on the court. I do a lot of cuts and I move around a lot. I basically told them, “Listen, as long as I have really good grip and ankle support, I’ll be good.” I move differently than a lot of athletes, so we really honed in on making sure the shoe would support that. I’ve felt pretty good playing in the New Balance shoes they’ve had me wear in the past and I know they were monitoring how those affected my play and developed my signature shoe from there. So I really appreciated that attention to detail. It definitely helped us nail the one big performance thing I wanted to get right. If you went back ten years and told young Tyrese that New Balance would be one of the most exciting brands in sneakers and that he’d be thrilled …

New Balance 99X Mega-Test: Which Iconic Sneaker Is Right for You?

New Balance 99X Mega-Test: Which Iconic Sneaker Is Right for You?

The New Balance 991 was released in 2001, cementing itself as the first 99X-series model of the 21st century. That was a pretty monumental moment. The 991 helped kick off the now-legendary “Made in U.K.” legacy and became the first 99X model to feature visible ABZORB cushioning, along with a mix of premium suede and mesh. Early adopters of the silhouette included European sneakerheads, Japan’s famously meticulous sneaker culture, and, somewhat improbably, Steve Jobs, who wore a pair during an Apple iBook presentation in 2002. It wasn’t until about three years ago that New Balance decided it was time to update the 991. Version 2 ended up being my favorite of the bunch I tried on, mainly because it nails that sweet spot between performance and lifestyle. The FuelCell midsole replaces much of the original ABZORB setup, the “N” logo is debossed, the signature ENCAP midsole cushioning feels soft and supportive, and I’m especially into the semi-translucent ABZORB SBS pods. The brand recommends going down a half size, which I probably could’ve done, but I …

Harry Styles Runs in New Balances and a Band Tee (and You Should, Too)

Harry Styles Runs in New Balances and a Band Tee (and You Should, Too)

Runners love to let other people know that they enjoy running. Case in point: Harry Styles chose Runner’s World as his publication of choice to promote his new album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. And well, when you’re as good of a runner as Styles is, then more power to you. The musician is quite the serious pavement pounder, having two marathons under his (running) belt. Last year, Styles ran both the Tokyo and Berlin marathons, the latter of which he did in just under three hours, an impressive feat for even the most elite runners. (For context, only about 5% of marathon finishers are able to clock in sub-three-hour times, and if we were able to do that, hell, we’d want to be on the cover of Runner’s World, too.) This weekend, Styles is set to hit Studio 8H for the second time, once again pulling double duty on Saturday Night Live as both host and musical guest. Given the week-long prep that goes into getting ready for the sketch comedy show, Styles …

The 2026 GQ Sneaker Survey

The 2026 GQ Sneaker Survey

It’s 2026—is sneaker culture still kicking? That question lingered in the air through the last days of 2025, fueled by social media discourse amongst sneakerheads, content creators, and longtime vets of the retail and brand-collaboration world. It’s a rhetorical question without a real answer unless you’re looking exclusively at dwindling sales numbers and prices on resale platforms like GOAT, KicksCrew, StockX, and others. The real answer is a little more complicated. Sneaker culture is undeniably shifting; the peak era of Air Jordan collabs and retros ruling the market and fetching astronomical markups at resale has somewhat definitively come to a close. You can point to the resale industry, the pandemic, the Last Dance craze finally dying down a little, and oversaturation as reasons but the biggest factor in the shift is a bit simpler: things change. And here at GQ we have long believed that change is good. The tides have been changing in the sneaker scene for a minute and beneath the “what does it all mean?” discourse of 2025 there were glimpses at …
