Men told me why they aren’t going to singles nights – and the reasons were fascinating

Join the Independent Women newsletter with Victoria Richards for a thoughtful take on the week’s headlines Join the Independent Women newsletter  Join the Independent Women newsletter  Occasionally, you write something that strikes a nerve. A recent one of mine about men not attending singles nights was one of them. Since the piece was published – you can read it here if you missed it – I’ve received hoards of emails from men, eager to share their thoughts with me. Usually, I’d dismiss these sorts of messages – they’re often written by trolls, more concerned with projecting their own frustrations with the world onto women on the internet than they are with engaging in any kind of meaningful discourse. I’ve been called a dumb b*tch, an ignorant toad, and a litany of other, sometimes rather creative, insults. But the men writing to me this time weren’t like that. They were intentional, heartfelt, and honest. And they were interesting, too, offering up a wide range of insights into why men might be more reluctant going to a …

‘Hell on earth’: Men share why they avoid singles nights

Join the Independent Women newsletter with Victoria Richards for a thoughtful take on the week’s headlines Join the Independent Women newsletter  Join the Independent Women newsletter  Olivia Petter’s report on the challenges of getting men to attend singles nights prompted a flood of responses from male readers sharing their own experiences of dating. Rather than rejecting the premise outright, many used the comments to explain why events like these hold little appeal for them personally. A recurring theme was discomfort with structured, high-pressure formats such as speed dating, which several described as “forced”, “synthetic” or akin to a job interview. Men spoke about feeling exposed in environments where rejection plays out publicly, arguing that the expectation to be instantly charming, funny and confident creates an uneven dynamic. Some said they preferred meeting partners organically – through friends, shared hobbies, travel or everyday life – where connection develops more naturally and without an audience. Others reflected more broadly on modern dating. A number of commenters said they had opted out of formal dating altogether, citing exhaustion …

Men aren’t signing up to singles nights – I launched my own and found out why

Join the Independent Women newsletter with Victoria Richards for a thoughtful take on the week’s headlines Join the Independent Women newsletter  Join the Independent Women newsletter  Dating has a problem – and the only people willing to fix it are women. Specifically, straight women, who are flocking in droves to singles nights around the world in an attempt to find a pleasant, emotionally available, and suitably untraumatised man. And yet, very often, this pursuit is futile, because the only other people there are single women like themselves, with little to talk about besides the mythological men who didn’t show up. As for those men, well, who knows? Perhaps they all decamped to a desert island without wifi. This might sound hyperbolic. But it’s a realistic depiction of what’s going on in the dating industry right now. I know this because I’ve recently become a part of it, having launched my own singles nights last year. It started as an accident; I wrote a feature for Style about throwing a singles mixer for my straight female …

Why You Still Feel So Tired Even After A Full Night’s Sleep

Why You Still Feel So Tired Even After A Full Night’s Sleep

You went to bed at a normal time, you didn’t look at your phone before bed, you followed all the golden rules to get a good night’s sleep and you got the full eight hours undisturbed… yet after all that, you wake up drained. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, according to data from YouGov, three in five women (61%) say they feel tired when they wake up, even when they get a lot of sleep, while around half (49%) of men say the same. But why does this happen? And what can we do about it? Why do we wake up tired, even after a full night’s sleep? Waking up exhausted after what feels like a ‘full’ night’s sleep is more common than people realise, and according to TRT UK, hormone specialists based in the UK, the problem usually isn’t the number of hours you’ve been in bed. Rather, it’s the quality and structure of your sleep. “Sleep happens in cycles, moving between light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep,” explain …

Molly Sims/Instagram “On a good night I get maybe 6 or so hours of sleep, but usually it’s somewhere between not enough and barely made it.” But to help the Lipstick on the Rim podcast host relax before attempting to hit the sheets, she relies on nighttime self-care must-haves. “I usually start with my Saje Wellness essential oils to help center myself. The best weighted blankets for a soothing night’s sleep

The best weighted blankets for a soothing night’s sleep

A good weighted blanket is a helpful aid for relaxation after a long day. Also known as a “wellbeing” or “anxiety blanket,” it works by applying gentle pressure to your body and can simulate the feel of a warm hug. Once seen as specialist therapy equipment to soothe adults suffering from stress and children with special educational needs such as autism or ADHD, weighted blankets are now a staple in many home shopping aisles. This is due to anecdotal evidence that they can help anyone calm their nerves. While there is limited data to prove their benefits, studies from the likes of the National Library of Medicine show that sensory touch can lessen physical responses to anxiety and put us at ease. Prices climb from around £20 to over £300, so there’s a range of styles, finishes and qualities to choose from. We tested 13 weighted blankets, with the best eight reviewed below to help you find the right fit. You’ll also find an FAQ section on how they work. Here’s a quick look at …

The best electric blankets to keep you warm on cold nights

The best electric blankets to keep you warm on cold nights

We’re all looking for low-cost ways to keeping the freezing cold at bay this winter. An electric blanket is a simple way of staying warm at home without turning the heating up. Costing less than 1p per hour to run, they can keep you cosy in bed or on the sofa, depending on whether you use an electric underblanket or mattress topper, or a heated throw or overblanket. They’re safe to use too – as long as you do so properly – says Giuseppe Capanna, product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First: “Electric blankets are a cheap and effective way to keep warm in the colder months. They work by using thin, insulated wires embedded within the fabric to generate heat when electricity flows through them.” Some models, like those from Silentnight and Dunelm, are available for £40 or less, but you can pay over £100 for premium versions with different heat zones, including those from Dreamland, Beurer and The White Company. 16 expert-led picks for a good night’s sleep in 2026

16 expert-led picks for a good night’s sleep in 2026

Score: 9/10 We like: The memory foam adapts to support you as you toss and turn in the night We don’t like: It’s smaller in size than most pillowcases Reviewed by Abigail Buchanan I liked sleeping on this pillow far more than I thought I would based on first appearances, as it’s flat and – to be frank – a bit odd-looking. It’s 60cm in length, so slightly shorter than the standard 70cm, which also means it looks a little sad and small in my pillowcase. However, I rapidly changed my tune when I lay down on it. An ideal pillow should adapt to the way you lie, taking the weight off any pressure points and helping you to stay still for a good quality sleep. Because of its memory foam core, this one was supremely comfortable, giving individualised support and moulding to the shape of my head and neck. It’s lighter and softer than other memory foam models too, which I liked as it’s more like a pillow and less like a medical headrest. …
