Peter Morrison/AP hide caption toggle caption Peter Morrison/AP LONDON — Ireland ‘s government could face a no-confidence vote Tuesday in Parliament over how it has handled a week of fuel protests that blocked access to oil supplies and a major port and caused massive traffic jams. Prime Minister Micheál Martin announced new tax cuts to try to end the crisis that began after the U.S.-Israel war on Iran led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for the world’s oil. But opposition parties blasted the government for failing to respond sooner and criticized the aid it offered. Sinn Fein, the largest opposition party, called for the no-confidence vote scheduled Tuesday evening. But Martin’s coalition government has scheduled an earlier vote of support that could make the no-confidence motion moot if passed. The passage of a no-confidence vote would force the ruling government to resign and lead to either Parliament voting …

French government survives no-confidence votes over budget – POLITICO

That maneuver, Article 49.3 of the constitution, allows the government to ram through legislation without a vote but in turn gives opposition lawmakers the opportunity to respond by putting forward a no-confidence vote. Lecornu triggered that measure on Tuesday to pass the part of the budget that concerns raising revenue. He is expected to use it again Friday to pass the final part of the budget concerning government expenditures. Lecornu had been expected to survive, as the political extremes do not have enough lawmakers among themselves to bring down the government. The more centrist Socialists, who have played a kingmaker role during the prime minister’s tenure, did not try to topple the government after Lecornu offered them several last-minute budgetary concessions. France is under pressure from financial markets and international institutions to cut a budget deficit that came in at 5.4 percent of GDP last year and debt that is projected to go up to 118.2 percent of GDP in 2026, according to the government’s forecast. The country’s hung parliament was, for a second year …

French government to force through 2026 budget, face no-confidence vote – POLITICO

Far-right leaders Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen both quickly took to X to excoriate the move, with the former reiterating his call for President Emmanuel Macron to dissolve parliament and send voters back to the ballot box. Le Pen is barred from running in any future contest until an appeals court rules on the five-year election ban she was handed as the result of an embezzlement conviction last year.  Lecornu and his government entered the new year with mostly risky options to finalize France’s fiscal plans after lawmakers in the country’s hung parliament failed to pass a proper budget before the end of 2025. Early in his tenure, Lecornu ruled out using Article 49.3 to pass a budget, betting the concession would help ensure the survival of his minority government and avoid the fate of his two immediate predecessors, both of whom were toppled over their deficit reduction efforts. But on Monday he acknowledged that despite personal “regret” and “bitterness,” he would need to go back on his word, saying that while the government wanted the parliamentary procedure to continue “until the end,” the …

Von der Leyen snubs Parliament’s latest no-confidence debate – POLITICO

Von der Leyen snubs Parliament’s latest no-confidence debate – POLITICO

No other commissioners will be present at the debate in Strasbourg, according to two officials. A vote on the motion, which is all but certain to fail, will take place on Thursday. During previous debates on censure motions, von der Leyen and her team of 26 commissioners turned out in force to project unity. This time, the message is different: the Commission is no longer playing ball. The shift reflects growing fatigue inside the Berlaymont at a parliamentary tool that was used three times against von der Leyen in the second half of 2025. Two of those motions were brought by the far right and one by the far left. All failed. Support from just 72 of the Parliament’s 720 lawmakers is needed to trigger a motion of censure, and many lawmakers from the center-right European People’s Party, the Socialists and Democrats, and the liberals of Renew say the ease of launching censure motions has diluted their impact. EPP spokesperson Pedro López de Pablo said these “useless efforts” to bring down the Commission “drive me …

Key French budget talks to resume as government faces two no-confidence motions

Crucial talks regarding the 2026 budget are set to resume in the French National Assembly on January 13. A few days earlier, a parliamentary committee rejected the budget bill in its present form, another sign of the uphill struggle the government is facing to secure it. The Prime minister even hinted at the possibility of a snap election in a few months. FRANCE 24’s Marc Perelman breaks it down for us. Keywords for this article Source link

French Socialists Won’t Vote With Mercosur No-Confidence Motions

French Socialists Won’t Vote With Mercosur No-Confidence Motions

PARIS, Jan 11 (Reuters) – The French Socialist party will not ‌vote in favour of two no-confidence motions ‌filed by far-right and far-left opposition parties over France’s failure to block the EU’s Mercosur trade deal, its leader said on Sunday, giving some breathing space to the country’s fragile government. “It ‍would be absurd to censure the government on Mercosur,” Olivier Faure told BFM TV. The Mercosur deal- 25 years in the works – is between the EU and the Mercosur group of South American countries. Analysts had said last week that approval chances of these motions were few, especially the one filed by the far-right National Rally (RN), the biggest party in the National Assembly, as left-wing parties never vote for any of its initiatives. Still, the threats underline ‌the political tightrope Macron’s administration continues to walk just over a year before the 2027 presidential election, with ‌polls showing the RN ‍has a shot at victory next year.
