This feature gives you a quick overview of longer messages. These summaries are displayed on your Pixel lock screen. Google is always trying to make Android a more user-friendly and efficient mobile OS. With the advent of AI, some features can be simplified in ways that would not have been possible without the help of local LLMs. One such feature is the new Android notification summaries. This feature aims to summarize longer messages from popular messaging apps (such as Google Messages) and present the summaries on your lock screen (not when you’re using your phone). There are a couple of caveats to this. First, because the summarization happens on-device, the power required excludes the Pixel 9a, which leaves the 9, 9 Pro, 10, and 10 Pro. That’s not a long list of devices, but it’s very possible the feature will eventually trickle down to other …

Google Apologizes for Sending the Worst Push Notification You Can Possibly Imagine

Iona Wolff / BAFTA via Getty Images / Futurism Disaster tends to strike when you let automated systems distribute news, especially on sensitive topics. The latest case in point: how Google’s automated news alerts accidentally ended up throwing more fuel onto an already hurtful racial slur controversy that unfolded at the BAFTA awards this weekend. As Deadline reported, Google pushed out a notification linking to an article with the headline, “How the Tourette’s Fallout Unfolded at the BAFTA Film Award.” The problem was the message appended to the notification, which prompted readers to “see more on n****rs.” The blunder became viral after Instagram influencer Danny Price posted a screenshot of the alert to his followers, calling it “absolutely f**ked.” “What an interesting Black History month this has turned out to be,” Price wrote. Google apologized for the slur after the incident gained news coverage. “We’re very sorry for this mistake. We’ve removed the offensive notification and are working to prevent this from happening again,” a spokesperson told media outlets. Understandably, the error prompted fiery discussions …

This scam notification reminds me that nothing is safe

Lots of scams come from surprise sources, like an email impersonating your bank or a sudden loud pop-up. We trust the apps and websites we use all the time not to throw scams our way, but letting your guard down can lead to you falling for tricks. Recently, I got a scam notification from a financial service I use. Its systems were breached, allowing someone to broadcast a sham that looked legitimate. Thankfully, I didn’t even consider opening it, but I’m sure many people did. It’s a good reminder that you should always be skeptical for your safety. This didn’t seem fishy at first I wasn’t interested anyway I’ve used the service Betterment to invest and store savings for a long time. While I’ve limited my phone notifications to avoid distractions, I keep them on for apps like financial services because I want to know when a deposit is complete or similar. I have them go to the Notification Center on my phone, where I can review them on my terms. Screenshot by Ben Stegner; …

Fintech firm Betterment confirms data breach after hackers send fake crypto scam notification to users

Automated investment platform Betterment has confirmed that hackers broke into some of its systems last week and accessed the personal information of an undisclosed number of its customers.  In an email sent on Monday, which TechCrunch has seen, Betterment said that hackers gained access to some company systems on January 9 by way of a social engineering attack, which involved “third-party platforms” that the company uses for marketing and operations.  The company said customer names, email addresses and postal addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth were compromised in the attack. With this access, hackers were able to send a fraudulent notification to users, claiming to triple the value of their crypto by sending $10,000 to a wallet controlled by the attacker, as reported by The Verge.  Betterment, which allows customers to invest in crypto, also published an announcement about the breach on its website, but did not disclose how many customers were targeted, nor how many had their personal information accessed, stolen, or seen by the hackers.  Betterment added that it detected the attack …
