U.S. nurses choose Canada over the U.S. under Trump : NPR

Nurses Brandy Frye (left) and Susan Fleishman work the night shift at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in British Columbia. Both said they left their longtime U.S. jobs last year to get away from the policies and hateful rhetoric of President Trump. Taylor Pradine/KFF Health News hide caption toggle caption Taylor Pradine/KFF Health News Last month, Justin and Amy Miller packed their vehicles with three kids, two dogs, a pet bearded dragon, and whatever belongings they could fit, then drove 2,000 miles from Wisconsin to British Columbia to leave President Trump’s America. The Millers resettled on Vancouver Island, their scenic refuge accessible only by ferry or plane. Justin went to work in the emergency room at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, where he became one of at least 20 U.S.-trained nurses hired since April. Trump, some of the nurses said, was why they left. “There are so many like-minded people out there,” said Justin, who now works elbow to elbow with Americans in Canada. “You aren’t trapped. You don’t have to stay. Health care workers are welcomed …

Psychological capital mitigates the impact of interpersonal sensitivity on anxiety in future nurses

Psychological capital mitigates the impact of interpersonal sensitivity on anxiety in future nurses

A new study published in BMC Psychology has found that those who are highly sensitive to others’ reactions are more likely to experience anxiety, and that their levels of inner psychological resources play a key role in this link. Even before nursing students begin their careers in hospitals, many experience anxiety tied to academic workloads, clinical placements, and the emotional weight of caring for patients. Researchers have long known that stress and anxiety are common in nursing programs, but this new study sheds light on why some students may be more vulnerable than others. One factor the researchers examined is interpersonal sensitivity, which refers to being unusually alert to how others behave, speak, or react. People high in interpersonal sensitivity often worry about being judged, criticized, or rejected. While this trait has been studied in relation to depression, its connection to anxiety—especially among nursing students—has received far less attention. To address this gap, the research team – led by Yanyan Mi (Xuzhou Medical University) and Zhen Wang (Taishan Vocational College of Nursing) – surveyed 1,815 …

Nurse who called trans paedophile ‘Mr’ facing sack

Nurse who called trans paedophile ‘Mr’ facing sack

A nurse who was disciplined for calling a transgender paedophile “Mr” is facing dismissal for allegedly speaking publicly about her ordeal. Jennifer Melle, 40, was issued with a final written warning after misgendering the patient at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, in May 2024. Ms Melle said she referred to the individual, an inmate from a high-security men’s prison listed as male on their medical record, as “Mr” and “he” while discussing the use of a catheter. She told them: “Sorry I cannot refer to you as ‘her’ or ‘she’, as it’s against my faith and Christian values but I can call you by your name.” Ms Melle said the patient then subjected her to a racially and religiously aggravated assault, lunging at her and calling her a “n—–” three times. Despite this, she was referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) over alleged breaches of its conduct policy. The NMC code states that nurses should not express personal beliefs “in an inappropriate way”, even for religious reasons. Ms Melle, who has filed …

Nurses in transgender row suffered harassment from NHS trust, tribunal rules | UK News

An employment tribunal has delivered its judgment in the case of a group of nurses who complained about a transgender colleague’s use of a female changing room. The tribunal found that the nurses from Darlington Memorial Hospital suffered harassment from their NHS trust, with the “effect of violating the dignity of the claimants and creating a hostile, intimidating, humiliating and degrading environment for them”. The nurses took County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust to an employment tribunal over a policy that allowed their colleague, Rose Henderson – who was born male but identifies as a woman – to use the facilities. Rose Henderson had used the room since starting at the hospital as a student in 2019. The complaints from other nurses began in 2023. “Women were in distress – their dignity and privacy was being violated,” Bethany Hutchinson, one of the nurses who brought the case, had told Sky News. “Women should be allowed to have safe single sex facilities. Particularly when you’re just about to start a shift – we have to undress …

Man who threw boy off Tate Modern balcony sentenced for attacking nurses at Broadmoor | UK News

A man who threw a boy off a balcony at the Tate Modern gallery has been jailed for 16 weeks for attacking two nurses. Jonty Bravery kicked one nurse at Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, in the thigh and “clawed” at the face of the other, drawing blood, in September 2024. The 24-year-old was convicted in November but didn’t attend the trial and refused to appear via video link at Thursday’s sentencing. He was previously given a life sentence for throwing the six-year-old French boy from the 10th floor of London‘s Tate Modern in 2019. The boy survived the 100ft (30m) fall with devastating injuries that included multiple broken bones and a bleed on the brain. Bravery’s recent trial heard three staff at the psychiatric hospital monitor him “24 hours a day, seven days a week” and his room only contains a mattress. Two-hour naps during night shifts may restore brain function and memory in nurses

Two-hour naps during night shifts may restore brain function and memory in nurses

A new study suggests that taking a two-hour nap during a night shift may help restore brain function and memory in nurses. The research provides evidence that napping can reverse some of the disruptive effects of sleep deprivation on brain connectivity. These findings were published in the Journal of Sleep Research. Nursing is a demanding profession that requires round-the-clock patient care. This necessity often forces medical staff to work night shifts, which disrupts their natural sleep-wake cycles. The resulting sleep loss is frequently associated with a decline in cognitive performance. Previous studies indicate that this cognitive decline can lead to serious consequences. These include a higher risk of workplace accidents, such as needle stick injuries, and an increase in medication errors. Chronic sleep deprivation is also linked to broader health issues like depression, heart disease, and obesity. Hospitals and researchers have sought effective strategies to mitigate these risks. One common countermeasure is the “nighttime nap,” or a scheduled break for sleep during a shift. While napping is known to reduce sleepiness, the biological mechanisms behind …
