‘Occasionally a picture can change the course of history’: 33 scandalous photos that shocked the world

Words can tell a story, but it’s pictures that will make you believe in it. Such is the power of a photograph; the ability to strip away illusions, to illuminate something hidden, and sometimes force us to accept unpalatable truths. When it comes to scandal, seeing is believing – occasionally even to the point that a picture changes the course of history. How might life have been different for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had he not been photographed clutching the midriff of the 17-year-old girl he would later claim he had never met? Without this haunting triptych of the former prince, the late Virginia Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein’s fixer, Ghislaine Maxwell, hovering in the background, there would have been nothing physical to connect the then prince with a trafficking victim. Though for years Andrew’s friends insisted that the photograph must have been doctored, buried within the Epstein files recently released by the US Department of Justice is a note from Maxwell that appears to confirm it is real. But more often in what follows, the camera simply …

It’s a daydreaming distance she successfully achieves by singing into a dynamic mic over sophisticated, shoegazey layers of looped synths. This subtle, supple sound can, at best, sweep the listener up on a magic carpet ride, gaining the empowering perspective of audio altitude on their own emotions. At worst, it can find its elegantly constructed patterns dissolving into the background like a guided meditation. Similarly, its stated themes of “grief, joy, love, anxiety, hopelessness, hopefulness, age, capitalism and technology” can certainly send you floating – or spiraling – off at tangents. “Am I doing it for you?” Mackey asks gently in a refrain on the opening track, “Doing Laps”. It’s almost as though she’s singing to herself rather than posing …

Not where you might expect. He popped up at the Vatican when they announced the new pope, rubbed shoulders with locals at bars in Rome, and was even filmed trying (emphasis on trying) to help a fan park their car. Since concluding his last world tour in 2023 he’s also pressed pause on a hit-and-miss acting career, lost a central figure in former bandmate Liam Payne, who died aged 31 in 2024, and revealed how a reset in Italy over summer gave him a newfound perspective on life: “I remember going to a café and sitting and having a coffee and thinking, ‘I don’t remember the last time I sat down and had a coffee – if I’ve ever sat down and just had a coffee,’” he recalled. Now he’s back: in the charts and on billboards. After …
