Are Supermarkets ‘Taking The Mickey’ With Olive Oil Prices?

Are Supermarkets ‘Taking The Mickey’ With Olive Oil Prices?

In 2024, Miguel Guzmán, the chief sales officer of Deoleo (a huge olive oil producer which owns brands like Bertolli), said prices were expected to drop by as much as half in early 2025. That’s because growing conditions had improved in Spain. “The market is expected to begin to stabilise, and normality is expected to be gradually restored as the new harvest progresses and supply increases,” he said at the time. But over a year on, Filippo Berio director Walter Zanre has said that supermarkets are “taking the mickey” with the prices they expect customers to pay for the product, despite lower wholesale costs. “We brought prices down twice last year and it’s not all been passed on to the consumer, which is a huge frustration,” he told Sky News. He added, “The supermarket was surprised at how resilient the shopper was at high prices, so the view is they don’t need to give it all away for nothing”. In other words, he suggested high prices made them realise just how much more UK shoppers …

What kind of olive oil is best for the brain?

Olive oil is part of a brain-boosting diet, but which kind is the best? Alexander Prokopenko/Shutterstock We’ve all absorbed the message by now: olive oil is good for us. It lowers “bad cholesterol”, fights inflammation and protects against various chronic diseases, including some cancers. More recently, though, evidence has been piling up that suggests its benefits extend beyond the body to the brain. I wanted to know what that really meant. Which aspects of my cognition could it influence? How was it doing this? I had practical questions too – did it really need to be extra-virgin (and therefore eye-wateringly expensive)? And just how much do I need to consume to make a difference? The answers are more promising – and less restrictive – than I expected. It turns out, olive oil may not be the only oil with a claim on brain health. First though, the usual caveats. All nutrition research is notoriously difficult to do well.  Studies often require participants to keep food diaries, and I probably don’t need to tell you how …

Influencers are drinking shots of olive oil and lemon juice. Should you? | Well actually

Influencers are drinking shots of olive oil and lemon juice. Should you? | Well actually

A shot of lemon juice and olive oil might be delicious on a salad – but would you drink it straight up? That’s what wellness enthusiasts on TikTok and Instagram are doing, claiming it bestows glowing skin and better digestion, and supports the dubious process of “detoxing”. Wellness shots have become “a revolving door for trends”, as dietician Lauren Manaker puts it; over the years, knocking back apple cider vinegar, ginger-turmeric blends, wheatgrass, aloe vera and carrot juice have all come in and out of vogue. Could there be real benefits to this one? We asked experts. First of all, what does it taste like? Personally, I would happily add gin to vinaigrette and call it a dirty martini, so I wasn’t too worried about the bitter pungency of combining one tablespoon each of lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil. When I made myself the concoction, it went down easy. Dietician Michelle Routhenstein warned me that acid reflux can be an issue for some, due to the acidity of lemon and the peppery sharpness of …

Nicola Peltz Beckham’s awkward response to Beckham family feud revealed after olive branches

Nicola Peltz Beckham’s awkward response to Beckham family feud revealed after olive branches

Months after Brooklyn Beckham ‘s explosive statement in which he claimed his parents had manipulated him throughout his life, the Beckham feud continues, as Brooklyn’s wife Nicola Peltz Beckham has now broken her silence. This past week, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham  extended olive branches, as they publicly wished their estranged son Brooklyn a happy birthday. In response, Brooklyn and his wife Nicola skipped Victoria’s annual Paris Fashion Week show on March 6; the Beckham matriarch was instead supported by husband David, and three youngest children, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. © Getty Images for VogueBrooklyn with his wife Nicola Peltz (pictured in 2025) In what was a marked difference to years past, neither Brooklyn nor Nicola posted public shows of support on social media, although Nicola did post about her husband’s birthday, as well as her surprise cameo in Ryan Murphy’s series The Beauty, with Ashton Kutcher.  During an interview to mark her appearance as the “beautified” version of Isabella Rossellini’s Franny, Nicola was asked for the first time how she has been navigating the recent …

Ryan Riley recipe for joy: Black olive, feta and honey twists

I remember them crisping at the edges of my mother’s party platters, in between cubes of cheddar and sad slices of ham. Beige food, sunshine, and paper plates. But this. This is something else entirely. Here, the humble cheese twist has its party outfit on. Salty bursts of feta and the briny hit of tapenade are mellowed by thick, velvety yoghurt. Then comes the mint – sharp, cooling, almost medicinal, cutting through the richness like a breeze through heavy air. There’s honey too, just enough to round out the flavours, and a crack of black pepper for heat. They’re best served warm, golden and flaky from the oven, but just as good at room temperature with a glass of something cold. A dollop of lemon-thyme yoghurt on the side lifts them further still. Creamy, tangy, …

How To Stop Pasta Sticking Without Olive Oil

How To Stop Pasta Sticking Without Olive Oil

Chef after chef has decried the use of olive oil in pasta water, despite Gordon Ramsay’s love of the addition. Though he claimed it’s “crucial” to prevent pasta from sticking to itself, the general consensus seems to be that of pasta company Barilla, which said: “Skip the oil. Oil and water don’t mix.” Still, there’s nothing more annoying than watching your pasta shells meld into one unevenly-cooked mass as they boil. So if olive oil isn’t the way forward, what is? How can I prevent pasta from sticking to itself? Pasta becomes sticky due to loose starch. According to food brand Knorr, “Most sticky situations arise from a few key missteps during the cooking process”. These include not salting the water enough (though salting your water isn’t a “fool-proof” way to prevent sticking on its own) and not using enough water (experts recommend about two and a quarter litres per 450g pasta). Overcooking pasta also releases more starch, which makes the pasta “stickier”. That’s good news for sauces, but bad news for the pasta itself. …
