After a good old-fashioned Sundance bidding war, Olivia Wilde’s latest movie The Invite has landed at A24. This highly competitive eight-figure deal reteams Wilde with Megan Ellison and Annapurna, who produced Booksmart. The sex comedy, a remake of the Spanish language movie Sentimental, stars Seth Rogen, Ed Norton, Penelope Cruz and Wilde. It centers on a couple (Wilde and Rogen) whose relationship is on the brink of collapse and have an ill-timed dinner party with their enigmatic neighbors (Norton and Cruz), whose relationship seems to have the passion and open communication that the former’s is sorely missing. The audience at the Friday night premiere at the Eccles gave the film a standing ovation, while the critics praised the movie, Wilde’s third directorial effort following Booksmart (2019) and Don’t Worry Darling (2022). As protests continue in Minneapolis after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed anti-ICE protester Alex Pretti, attendees of the Sundance Film Festival are speaking out against the lethal actions of law enforcement and the continued attacks on protesters. Talent, including Olivia Wilde, Zoey Deutch and Natalie Portman, have been wearing “ICE Out” pins to festival premieres and events. “We’re all here getting to celebrate something really beautiful and hopeful in film storytelling. Long a mainstay of the European festivals, standing ovations have been gaining traction stateside at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It could be the feelings of nostalgia for the final festival in Park City. Or the spirit of cinema. Or maybe it’s just the altitude. No matter the reason, it is undeniable that the 2026 iteration of the Utah festival is overindexing on rapturous responses. On Saturday afternoon, the Olivia Colman fantasy drama Wicker received a double standing ovation. The audience first got on their feet when the film ended and as credits were rolling, and again when the filmmakers and cast were welcomed to the stage by Sundance director of programming Kim Yutani. Right after that premiere in the Eccles was the Olivia Wilde-directed dramedy The Invite, which also had the crowd on its feet.
