New acting AG plans to operate as Trump’s personal lawyer

Pam Bondi’s tenure at the Department of Justice started out with such promise. She understood from the beginning that her job was to serve not as attorney general of the United States, but as attorney general of Donald Trump. She was his personal legal hit woman, and she took on the assignment with energy and enthusiasm. For a solid year she fulfilled her duty as a top Trump sycophant, showing not even the slightest compunction at behaving like a schoolyard bully and shameless apple polisher. During what would turn out to be her last major public appearance in office, she testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Feb. 11 that Trump is “the greatest president in American history” and, in an attempt to divert attention, argued that the committee should be talking about the stock market instead of the Epstein files. The assumption was that the “audience of one,” as Trump is called, would undoubtedly be pleased by her combative attitude and rousing defense of him, but it turned out that he had already soured …

News From DC and Marvel Beloved artist and colorist Tatjana Wood, best known for her work at DC Comics, passed away at the very respectable age of 99. Warner Bros is getting a mite cranky about Chinese company ByteDance yoinking its iconic superhero characters so that any schmo with a social media account can post IP-infringing videos of Superman, Batman, et. al. Marvel has changed how they credit colorists, moving over to the term “color artist” to better reflect the vast amount of work these folks do in creating the final look of the comics we all love. Oxford Casino takes Maine to court over allowing tribes to operate iGaming

The Oxford Casino, based in Maine, has filed a federal lawsuit which challenges “efforts to grant a monopoly on online casino-style gambling (“iGaming”) to four specially selected Indian Tribes.” This comes after Governor Mills, of the State of Maine, announced her intention to allow the LD 1164 bill, named ‘An Act to Create Economic Opportunity for the Wabanaki Nations’ to become law. This was announced on January 8, with the bill authorizing Maine’s tribal governments to operate online gambling in the state to support tribal communities and economic development. “Governor Mills’ support for historic advances in tribal economic development, particularly her decision to allow LD 1164 to become law, marks an economic turning point for the Passamaquoddy people and for all Wabanaki Nations,” said Chief William Nicholas Sr. of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township in the initial news release, alongside other tribal chiefs. LA County is giving away free health code compliant food carts to help sidewalk vendors operate legally

Los Angeles County is moving to reshape sidewalk vending by removing one of its biggest barriers: the cost of meeting health rules. The Sidewalk Vending Cart Program, led by the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity and the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department, will invest $2.8 million to give away more than 280 food carts. Each cart meets California health code standards and allows vendors to operate legally. The program launched in August 2024 as part of a broader county effort to formalize sidewalk vending after years of shifting rules. Since 2018, state and local laws have steadily changed how street food businesses operate. Those changes have often raised costs for vendors trying to stay compliant. County officials say the new requirements, while meant to protect public health, have priced many people out of the legal system. The cart program is designed to close that gap. New Proposed Legislation Would Let Self-Driving Cars Operate in New York State

New Proposed Legislation Would Let Self-Driving Cars Operate in New York State

As self-driving car services from Alphabet’s Waymo, Amazon’s Zoox, and Tesla have slowly, quietly expanded across the US, one big, important state has mostly stayed mum: New York. The union’s fourth most populous state has some of the tightest laws governing autonomous vehicles, requiring companies approved to test in the state to only do so with a driver behind the wheel. There’s no current path for companies to operate the sort of commercial robotaxi services like the sort seen in San Francisco or Las Vegas. But that could be about to change. On Tuesday, as part of her annual State of State address, Governor Kathy Hochul is set to announce that she is proposing legislation that would expand New York’s current regulations to allow companies to operate limited commercial self-driving car services in cities around the state, her office confirmed Monday. Pilot robotaxi programs would be approved only if the companies submit applications that “demonstrate local support” for their tech’s deployment, as well as robust safety records. The program would exclude New York City. “This …
