Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac in Netflix Smash

Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac in Netflix Smash

The philosopher Biggie Smalls once pondered the nature of dangerously escalating rivalries. In a song of the same name, Biggie asked, “What’s beef?” Beef The Bottom Line A bold, well-acted, slightly over-extended follow-up. Airdate: Thursday, April 16 (Netflix)Cast: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, Cailee Spaeny, Youn Yuh-jungCreator: Lee Sung Jin His answers included the straightforward “Beef is when you need two gats to go to sleep,” and the playful “Beef is when I see you, guaranteed to be in I-C-U.” Christopher Wallace passed away, likely a victim of a beef, long before the rise of the limited series, so Lee Sung Jin had the exploratory lane all to himself when he released the eight-episode bleak comedy Beef back in 2023. The series, about the unforeseen consequences erupting from a relatively minor instance of road rage, dominated the Emmys and eventually was picked up for a second season, transitioning from limited series to anthology and reframing Biggie’s question as: “What’s Beef?” Or, put a different way, what is the Beef brand? And could a second …

The daring film ‘Homebound’ got Oscar buzz, is now on Netflix : NPR

Mohammad Saiyub (above, in a Mumbai quarter on a February day) appeared in a photo that went viral in the early days of the pandemic. He and his childhood buddy Amrit Kumar were hitching home, a journey of nearly 1,000 miles. Kumar, who is a Hindu Dalit, fell ill. Saiyub, a Muslim, cradled his friend by the roadside. Their different religious identities drew attention in a country where communal relations have been polarized after a decade of Hindu nationalist rule. The photo and the story behind it inspired the award-winning movie Homebound. Diaa Hadid/NPR hide caption toggle caption Diaa Hadid/NPR DEVARI, India — The legendary Martin Scorsese was the movie’s executive producer although his role was kept secret to ensure the film crew could keep working without attracting media attention. He was even assigned a code name: “elder brother.” That’s because Neeraj Ghaywan, director of Homebound, didn’t want to go public with his movie until it was ready. He worried its central story might be received with hostility by Indian media — by a country …

View from My Trash Can: Oscar the Grouch

View from My Trash Can: Oscar the Grouch

Add Sesame Street to your watchlist What’s the view from your trash can? Looking out of my can, all I see is birds chirping, happy monsters, and sunshine. YUCK! That is why I prefer to stay in my can or keep my eyes closed! What’s it like living on Sesame Street? Miserable. Next question! Everyone is always singing and dancing. And that little red furball is always laughing! It’s so cute. YUCK! Elmo told us he thinks he saw you smile once and that deep down, you’re a big softie. Is that true? What?! Smile. Me? No, never. Grouches don’t smile. Our motto is to turn that smile upside down! Are you able to watch TV in the trash can? Yes, but the signal is all fuzzy and I only get one channel! What do you enjoy watching? Worm TV! It’s the wormiest and messiest channel on television. I couldn’t get enough of the Worm Winter Games! Your trash can seems much bigger on the inside than on the outside – what do you keep …

Paraguay President Taps Oscar Lovera as Economy Minister

Paraguay President Taps Oscar Lovera as Economy Minister

ASUNCION, April 8 (Reuters) – Paraguay’s President Santiago Pena on Wednesday appointed Oscar Lovera as the South ‌American nation’s new economy ‌and finance minister, the government said in a statement. Lovera, who previously served as head of the vice ministry of financial administration, replaces Carlos Fernandez, who resigned last week at the president’s request.  The president’s office said the leadership change is part of a “new stage” intended to consolidate economic growth and improve state efficiency. Under Fernandez, Paraguay’s economy grew steadily and inflation remained under control. The country also earned investment-grade ratings from Moody’s and S&P Global during his tenure. Critics, however, argue that persistent institutional weaknesses have prevented these macroeconomic gains from reaching ordinary citizens. The Vanity Fair Oscar Party Looks Especially Stunning Through Jean Pigozzi’s Lens

The Vanity Fair Oscar Party Looks Especially Stunning Through Jean Pigozzi’s Lens

Jean Pigozzi—or Johnny, to his friends—is no stranger to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. By his count, he’s attended the event at least eight or nine times, not counting the many years he went to the legendary bash as a guest of Graydon Carter when it was just a dinner at Mortons. This year, the man-about-town and central subject of the HBO documentary I Am Curious Johnny was seated next to his old pal Carter at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party dinner, amongst other compatriots. “The dinner party was fun because I knew nearly everybody. There were 10 of us,” Pigozzi says over the phone. “I was next to Anjelica [Huston], who I’ve known for 100 years. Mick [Jagger] I’ve known for 50 years. Graydon, I’ve known for 30 years. It was really like having dinner with old friends.” For those familiar with Pigozzi, his many connections shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The October 2008 issue of this very magazine contained a feature called “Five Degrees of Jean Pigozzi,” showing him as …

Hasan Piker Came to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2026 and Says He “Got Frame Mogged by Real Celebrities”

Talk to me about walking the carpet. I didn’t have a stylist, but my outfit wasn’t too bad for something that I pulled together from my closet. I don’t have a lot of red-carpet attire, and you can’t be an outfit repeater. The jacket is a Japanese brand, but I guess it looks like a Chinese collar. I thought about wearing a suit that I got tailor-made in China, but that one’s gray. And I wasn’t sure if you’re allowed to wear gray to a black-tie event. The other thing I did not consider is that I should have gotten my hair and makeup done before the party. They even suggested a last-minute touch-up when I first walked in, but I was like, Nah, I don’t need that. That’s why every single other person on the red carpet looks super cool and super nice, and I look out of place and disheveled. Once you got off the carpet and stepped inside, what did you do? I pretty much first beelined to get a drink, and …

Last Looks at the Beauty From the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Red Carpet

Last Looks at the Beauty From the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Red Carpet

If awards season is all about endurance, the red carpet at Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party is the perfect moment to finally let loose. After months of waiting, the newly minted Oscar winners are ready to enjoy a round of congratulatory toasts. The beauty looks were surprisingly wearable, the type of makeup that looks more at home as it settles in over a night of partying, and guests stopped by the L’Oréal Paris touch-up station before they walked the carpet. So it’s no surprise that Sunday night’s standout faces emphasized freshness and finding your light. Glowing skin, flushed cheeks, and subtle sculpting were the key trends, like Cara Delevingne’s subtle pigments or Chase Infiniti’s glossy nude lip. A few bold lips spiced up the carpet—see Odessa A’zion and her cherry cola liner or Iris Apatow and Alison Brie’s just-bitten matte pouts. Simone Ashley and Bella Hadid both showed the power of carrying the high-wattage shimmer onto the shoulders, while Heidi Klum and Quinta Brunson proved that a classic smokey eye never goes out of style. Cara …
