‘Enough of this me me me’: Blake Morrison on memoir in the age of oversharing | Biography books

Every day I meet strangers who share intimate details with me. It’s called reading. In a newspaper piece a former sex addict recalls her need for BDSM (“when a sexual partner hurt me, I felt seen”) and how she conquered her dependency. On Substack an actor describes her grief on losing a baby (“After the miscarriage, I became convinced my daughter was backstage. I would push back the costumes on the rack and almost expect to find her”). And then there are the published memoirs, first-person stories of trauma, displacement and heartbreak. It’s not just women who unburden themselves, of course. As Martin Amis says in his memoir, Experience: “We are all writing it or at any rate talking it: the memoir, the apologia, the CV, the cri de coeur.” Recent memoirs have upped the ante, though. What was once a geriatric, self-satisfied genre (politicians, generals and film stars looking back fondly on long careers) is now open to anyone with a story to tell – “nobody memoirs”, the American journalist Lorraine Adams has called …

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more There is almost nothing worse than a post-social flashback; a sudden, salient, mental replay of waxing lyrical to your boss at the pub about the time your grandma fell over the rug drunk at Christmas – or some other nonsense they didn’t need to know about. Over sharers, generally, get quite a bad rap. Like when Prince Harry revealed in his 2023 tell-all memoir Spare that his penis was suffering from frost bite at William and Kate’s wedding (along with all the other private information he shared about the inner dynamics of the Royal family). Or when …

PsyPost’s PodWatch highlights interesting clips from recent podcasts related to psychology and neuroscience. In a recent episode of the Hidden Brain podcast titled “Coming Clean,” released on Monday, February 9, experts discussed the surprising power of vulnerability. Between the five and fifteen-minute marks of the broadcast, host Shankar Vedantam spoke with Harvard Business School psychologist Leslie John. They examined why admitting to our failures often yields better results than hiding them. John described a common psychological phenomenon she calls the “disclosure hangover.” This is the sinking feeling of regret or anxiety that settles in the morning after you share a personal, embarrassing, or vulnerable story with colleagues. While many people worry that these moments destroy their professional image, John argues that these fears are often misplaced. Research conducted by John indicates that calculated vulnerability can actually boost a leader’s standing. In one study involving a Google executive, the leader recorded a video introduction where he admitted he applied for roughly twenty jobs before landing his current role. Viewers trusted him more and expressed a greater …
