Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer (Image: Getty) A Falklands veteran has called on Sir Keir Starmer to end the frozen state pensions scandal. Roger Edwards, 79, who served in the Falklands War, urged the Government to look at the issue again for the British Overseas Territory. He is one of more than 400,000 British retirees living abroad whose state pensions were frozen from the date they left. His plea comes as a representatives from counties including the Falkland Islands, Canada, Australia and South Africa are taking part in a discussion on the issue in Parliament on Wednesday. Delays in the administration of teachers’ pensions are “unacceptable”, the schools minister has said, as a union called on the government to “step in”. Problems with the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) have received renewed national attention after MPs heard about similar issues with civil service pensions. Both are run by the outsourcing giant Capita. Tens of thousands of retired teachers are still waiting for statements telling them how much they could be owed following public sector pension reforms in the 2010s. The McCloud remedy came after a 2018 court judgment ruled “transitional protection” reforms three years earlier had treated younger workers unfairly. Freedom of information requests have revealed tens of thousands of retired teachers are still awaiting remediable service statements (RSS), telling them how much they are owed and asking them to choose between a legacy scheme or a reformed option. ‘Complex change’ Speaking to Schools Week on Wednesday, schools minister Georgia Gould said the McCloud judgment “was a massive, big, complex change, and there are delays in complex cases. The country’s non-starting “autumn of reforms” has already turned into the “spring of reforms,” with concrete proposals on several fronts yet to be reported. The initials results, on long-term care, are expected soon, followed by those on health care funding. After that, plans to reform the pension system are expected by June, so legislation can be drafted and submitted to parliament before it breaks for summer recess in July. Normally, all this would be a tall order for the SPD. But “major reforms must take place,” Klingbeil admitted in a recent keynote speech, and they must lead to “lower taxes, lower levies, less bureaucracy, competitive energy prices. In short: A country where work is worthwhile again.” This means the battle within the coalition will be focused on points of detail and priority that Merz and Klingbeil will argue over — both in private and performatively in public — to present their credentials to voters. It is the fourth Birmingham Live headline to have been ruled misleading by IPSO in just over a year. Reach national title the Daily Express had 12 similar upheld complaints in 2025, largely relating to economic policy. The latest Birmingham Live complaint was submitted by Iona Bain, a freelance financial journalist who is the resident money expert on BBC Morning Live and money columnist for The Observer. The article, published in August, was headlined: “State pensioners set to receive state pension for ‘just three years of lifetime’.” An image caption repeated the same wording. Tata Consultancy Services was due to take over the reins managing the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) from outsourcing firm Capita last October. But the transfer was delayed a first time last August, with completion instead promised this summer by the Department for Education. Now it has been delayed again until later this year, the DfE confirmed. Schools Week understands it will transfer in October. Capita, which has managed the scheme since 1996,  will continue to run it in the meantime.
