Pet Food Store Owner Behind US Pavilion in Venice—and More Art News

The Headline ANATOMY OF A PAVILION. The New York Times dug into the making of the forthcoming US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and found that its 37-year-old commissioner, Jenni Parido,  has no professional experience in the arts. She recently ran a luxury pet food store in Florida, setting her on an “unlikely path from selling venison nuggets and dried sardines to organizing a federally sponsored pavilion on a global stage,” according to the Times. Parido later picked Jeffrey Uslip, who made headlines a decade ago for a racially insensitive in St. Louis, to curate the pavilion. Artist Alma Allen ended up being named as the American representative, but not before others, including photographer William Eggleston and sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud, reportedly bailed out first. “I don’t think my work is political in respect to party politics,” Allen told the Times, later adding: “I think that people will have to make a judgment for themselves.” Related Articles PENDANT POPS UP. Two cheetah cubs narrowly escape the illegal pet trade

In an intervention that might one day inspire the animated animal version of Argo, the Cheetah Conservation Fund and Somaliland’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change rescued two cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) cubs on the verge of a terrible fate.  The Cheetah Conservation Fund carried out the extraction after receiving urgent intelligence that traffickers in the Somaliland capital were about to load the two cubs onto a boat and illegally move them into the exotic pet trade. Just hours later, the organization put a rescue team in action and worked with local authorities to take possession of the cheetahs.  The next day, the cubs ended up at Somaliland’s Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre, where veterinary and wildlife experts will care for them. The conservation centre opened in Somaliland in 2016 by Laurie Marker for cheetahs pulled out of the illegal wildlife trade. At the moment, 125 rescued cheetahs live at the facility. Horror as pet killed by another dog while protecting owner – ‘back legs had gone’ | UK | News

A pet owner has recalled the horror moment her beloved dog was killed by another animal while trying to defend her. Herbie, a three-year-old Cavapoo, tragically died in Padstown, Cornwall last week after a dog escaped out of a garden and killed him. Speaking of her heartbreak owner Kayla Colwill, who sustained bite marks to her hands, called the fatal incident “one of the most traumatic things”. She told CornwallLive that the other dog was “shaking” her “dog round” when he suddenly “dropped” Herbie before launching an atttack on her. It was at this moment she saw Herbie’s “back legs had gone”. She said: “And he came for me and bit me on the hand. And then my dog was like, ‘no way’ and bit the dog on the butt to say ‘no, you’re not going for her’. And yeah, that was just the end of my dog. “He went down fighting for his mum. It was one of the most traumatic things.” The bite marks on Kayla’s hands have now bruised and scabbed, serving …

This New Health-Tracking Pet Collar Is Like a Smartwatch for Dogs and Cats

This New Health-Tracking Pet Collar Is Like a Smartwatch for Dogs and Cats

Our pets can’t speak up and tell us how they’re feeling, or why and where they are hiding. Tractive, an Austria- and Seattle-based tech company that creates GPS tracking devices for pets, announced on Wednesday two new smart collars that, according to the press release, “will redefine pet care for millions of families.” Is your pet stressed, breathing unusually or scratching too much? Much like the basic health-tracking features you can find on a smartwatch, the collars — the Cat 6 Mini ($79) and Dog 6 XL ($89) — are designed to track this behavior and communicate the issues to help maintain your dog or cat’s quality of life. “Pets can’t tell us when something is wrong, but their bodies can,” Michael Hurnaus, CEO and founder of Tractive, said in a statement. “With cutting-edge sensors on every tracker, learnings from millions of pets and AI-powered insights, we’re turning one of the world’s largest pet data platforms into clear, simple information so pet parents can act sooner and care even better.” When it comes to tracking collars, …

Man killed girlfriend’s pet rabbit, Momo, tossing him from second-floor window, authorities say

A North Hollywood man has been charged with animal cruelty and domestic violence offenses for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s two-month-old rabbit during a violent outburst in February. Nikolas Hart, 25, allegedly stomped on the rabbit, Momo, then stuffed him in a trash bag and threw him from the couple’s second-story apartment on Feb. 11, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. The rabbit died from blunt force trauma to his chest, abdomen and face, prosecutors said. Hart also assaulted his girlfriend on previous occasions, according to the district attorney’s office. He was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to one felony count of animal cruelty, one misdemeanor charge each of injury to a spouse or cohabitant and attempting to dissuade a victim or witness, and three counts of disobeying a court order to not contact the victim. A judge set bail at $150,000 and issued a protective order prohibiting Hart from having any animals in his care. Hart is next due in court April 16. If convicted on all …

The pet I’ll never forget: Beau, the labrador who saved my life | Life and style

When I lost my wife, Jo, to cancer eight years ago, I knew it was time for a fresh start, so I packed up my London home and moved to Poole on the Dorset coast. I longed for a companion, so I welcomed a labrador puppy into my life, naming him Beau in a nod to the time Jo and I had spent living in France. A gun dog from Derbyshire with a sleek black coat and deep brown eyes, Beau was an adorable and mischievous puppy who kept me on my toes right from the start. When he was six months old, he rummaged in a fisherman’s bucket and swallowed a fishing line and hook. Thankfully, it came out the other end, narrowly avoiding surgery. Beau fits perfectly into my outdoor lifestyle. He comes sailing and paddleboarding with me and sits patiently on the shore when I go for my daily sea swims, running around excitedly when I emerge from the water, spraying sand everywhere. It was after one of these sea swims that …

Shame of mass pet adandonment with nearly 500 alerts in Midlands

Britain’s biggest animal charity has urged families to consider adopting a pet after revealing its rescue sites were “overwhelmed”. The RSPCA said a huge rise in mass abandonments – involving ten or more animals at once – had partly fuelled the crisis. Such incidents have rocketed by nearly 70 per cent in just four years. Last year, it responded to 4,200 incidents involving at least ten animals at the same address across England and Wales – including 493 in the West Midlands. READ MORE: New Birmingham Metro extension opening on Easter Sunday And it said rising cruelty and neglect led to a six-year high of animals in RSPCA care, with almost half in emergency boarding because centres were full. RSPCA Superintendent Jo Hirst said: “We are struggling with rising reports of cruelty and neglect and over recent years more and more of those reports will involve ten, 20, even 100 animals. And because they’ve been living in large groups, they may need more support until they are ready to find a new home. “We currently …

The pet I’ll never forget: Merlin the therapy sheep | Animals

Merlin the sheep came to me by chance four years ago. A friend of mine had a lamb she was bottle-feeding, but she couldn’t look after it any more so she asked me if I could take care of it. I live in Moortown, Leeds, and rent about three hectares (seven acres) of land in Eccup, a small village nearby, where I’ve kept horses for about 13 years. I needed some help clearing the weeds that the horses wouldn’t eat and sheep seemed like the best solution because they’ll eat anything – so I said yes. The lamb was called Bambi and when I came to collect her, my friend offered me another lamb, Merlin. Shortly after, Bambi died and it was just Merlin left. It wasn’t long until he started to show his special powers. I’ve worked as an equine therapist for eight years, helping people with illness, depression and grief. My practice involves outdoor therapy and my horses are my usual assistants. My clients visit me in the field, they stroke and cuddle …

Major scientific breakthrough reveals even cavemen had pet dogs | World | News

14,300-year-old dog jawbone from Gough’s Cave, UK (Image: The Trustees of the Natural History Museum) Dogs were living alongside humans in Europe and Turkey around 16,000 years ago, a new study published reveals. Researchers analysed ancient DNA from archaeological sites, including Gough’s Cave in the UK and Pınarbaşı in Turkey, dating back to approximately 16,000-14,000 years ago, a time when all humans were hunter-gatherers and agriculture had not yet emerged. The findings have confirmed that these were some of the earliest known domestic dogs. While it has long been known that dogs descended from grey wolves, determining when their domestication occurred has been difficult. Early dog skeletons often resembled wolves, and previous studies relied on short DNA sequences or skeletal measurements, making early identification uncertain. However, in this study, scientists from 17 institutions recovered whole genomes from specimens older than 10,000 years. Comparing them with over 1,000 ancient and modern dogs and wolves confirmed the bones were dogs, pushing back the earliest direct evidence by more than 5,000 years.
