Gateway to the South Downs: take the train to a picture-perfect village with a cracking pub | Sussex holidays

Wisteria and clematis hang from weathered cottage walls. Tulips and pink apple blossom spill out of several gardens. Thatched animals decorate the rooftops. There’s a Norman church, a medieval castle and an 80-hectare (200-acre) nature reserve. Amberley is the kind of place people assume you can only reach by car, but the village has its own railway station with regular direct trains, along the scenic Arun Valley line, from Bognor, Horsham and London Victoria. This spring, the Black Horse pub reopened in Amberley. The new owners are the gourmet Gladwin brothers, Oliver and Richard, returning to their Sussex roots near Nutbourne Vineyards. Having founded five Local & Wild restaurants in London, the Black Horse is their first country pub and first place with rooms. I’ve walked through Amberley numerous times, but never stopped to explore. It’s the midpoint of the South Downs Way, a 100-mile route from Winchester to Eastbourne, with views for much of its length in both directions: north across the Weald and south towards the sea. Seaside strolls, park picnics and weekend escapes become picture-perfect prints with the instax mini 12 from Currys

Hazy spring and summer days often pass by in a happy blur. You’ve packed up the picnic in the park, removed the sand from between your toes and – before you know it – the sun has set. As for the memories, they’re mostly lost in your phone (amid train ticket screenshots and random outtakes). Until the instax mini 12™ instant camera, that is. Recording those joyful moments and creating physical souvenirs, the instax mini 12™ instant camera takes your adventures from ephemeral to tangible in seconds – with just a quick twist, click, and print. Pass them to friends, tuck them into a notebook or stick them on your wall. Each snapshot becomes a keepsake you can hold onto and display, rather than another file that’s forgotten in your phone. And that’s just the start. Twist & Go controls, a built-in selfie mirror, Close-Up mode and automatic flash make snapping your best moments easy. All without needing to scroll in despair (and second guess yourself) to find a decent shot. Because spring weekends deserve …

For others, it’s unrealistic romantic expectations set by movies and TV.  For me, though, my greatest source of insecurity was the r/sourdough forum.  It’s nobody’s fault: if I had created a tall, fluffy masterpiece with a perfect golden crust, I, too, would want to share a shot. If my first-ever loaf looked like it belonged in an ad for artisanal butter, I would indeed want the world to know. And people share their less successful loaves – a gummy rise, a burnt base – as well. Still, I couldn’t help it. After a while, I began judging my slightly gummy, slightly deflated loaves a little too harshly. Then, the inevitable turn towards The Product That Solves It All: if I just owned one of these twisty little starter whisks, or a proper starter jar, or a bigger banneton, I’d be (grid) worthy!! I thought.  It sounds silly, because it is. But according to a post shared by u/good-things_ in the group, I’m not alone. “I don’t …
