How a bomb disposal expert prepared Bond hopeful Aaron Taylor-Johnson for his new role – by blowing up a pig’s head

Over the last two decades, Nick Orr’s career as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist for both the British Army and voluntary organisations in war-torn countries has seen him working in all sorts of dangerous, life-threatening situations. But for one of his latest assignments, Orr found himself doing something very different: advising on a star-studded, big-budget film project. Fuze, which arrives in UK cinemas this weekend, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as an Afghanistan veteran and bomb disposal expert who is urgently called in to assist when an unexploded WWII bomb is discovered on a busy construction site in the centre of London. From there, the film takes all sorts of twists and turns – incorporating a heist element – with other key cast members including Theo James and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Orr – who has worked everywhere from Afghanistan, Mali and Iraq to Kuwait, Ukraine and Gaza – had been emailed asking if he’d put his name down for consideration as an adviser and, from what he’s heard, his was the only CV the production team read …

First lab-grown oesophagus successfully implanted in pigs | Science, Climate & Tech News

Scientists in the UK have created the first lab-grown oesophagus and implanted it in pigs, which have been able to use it to swallow food. In the study, scientists from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and University College London (UCL) showed that a pig donor oesophagus can have cells removed, be repopulated with a recipient’s own cells and implanted in the recipient to restore the organ’s function. The hospital said it marks a major step to carrying out personalised regenerative treatments for children born with life-threatening oesophageal conditions. Dr Marco Pellegrini, senior researcher at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, said the technology “could allow us to build a child a new oesophagus, using their own cells, collected in a surgery they are having anyway, combined with a ready-prepared scaffold from pig tissue”. Other studies have previously shown parts of this technology, but this is the first time the full process has been completed with such success, the study’s authors said. Peppa Pig’s little brother George diagnosed as deaf in special episode

Peppa Pig’s little brother George diagnosed as deaf in special episode

Peppa Pig’s younger brother George will be revealed to be moderately deaf and fitted with a hearing aid in a new storyline set to tackle childhood hearing loss. The upcoming episode, which has been developed in partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society, will see George attend an audiology appointment, where his family discovers he has moderate hearing loss in one ear. He is then fitted with a new hearing aid, enabling him to experience sounds in a new way. The audiologist in the episode is voiced by Gladiators star Jodie Ounsley, who is known to fans as Fury. Ounsley, who was born deaf and had a cochlear implant as a toddler, and is also an author and former England rugby international, said on ITV’s Good Morning Britain of the new role: “I loved Peppa Pig growing up, so I never imagined myself to actually be involved in such a storyline like this, and myself as the audiologist.” She continued: “I just think, it was really personal, because I could understand from my parents’ point …

Peppa Pig’s New Deaf Storyline Hits Home For Parents Like Me

Peppa Pig’s New Deaf Storyline Hits Home For Parents Like Me

When my son was born profoundly deaf, I suddenly understood how isolating it can feel when the world doesn’t reflect your experience. As a parent, I wanted him to see that his hearing loss didn’t define him, but I didn’t know where to start. I’d grown up as a child of deaf parents, but television never showed families like mine. We were invisible. And I feared my son would feel the same. That’s why the new Peppa Pig storyline, in which George (Peppa’s younger brother) is revealed to be deaf, feels so powerful. It’s the first time many children, and their parents, will see a character like George navigating hearing loss in a mainstream children’s show. It’s not just entertainment; it’s representation that can reassure children that they belong, and that differences are normal. Watching George go for a hearing test and start using a hearing aid is the kind of story I wish I’d had when my son was little. The storyline makes it clear that hearing technology can help, but it doesn’t fully …

Pigs and grizzly bears may be the key to youthful human skin

Pigs and grizzly bears may be the key to youthful human skin

A tiny structure hidden beneath the skin may hold clues to smoother skin and better healing. New research shows this feature forms after birth, not before, and scientists now know what controls it. For years, most scientists believed rete ridges formed during fetal growth. That assumption slowed progress. By closely tracking skin development in pigs, the researchers found the ridges appear only after birth. The discovery reshapes how skin growth is understood. “These structures degrade as we age; now we know how they form and have a blueprint to guide future work on restoring them,” said Ryan Driskell, an associate professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences. “Most scientists assumed these skin ridges formed during early embryonic development, which explains why no one really understood their origin.” Ryan Driskell, left, an associate professor, and Sean Thompson, right, a PhD graduate student, are greeted by pigs at a farm near Garfield, Wash. Ozzy Osbourne Tribute Features ‘War Pigs’ Performance at 2026 Grammys

Reba McEntire, Lauryn Hill and Post Malone honored Roberta Flack, Ozzy Osbourne, D’Angelo and more artists who died over the last year during the 2026 Grammys‘ In Memoriam segment on Sunday. Post Malone was joined by Slash, Duff McKagan, Chad Smith and Andrew Watt in an all-star tribute to Osbourne, who died of a heart attack in July 2025 at the age of 76. The group performed one of Osbourne’s most notable songs, “War Pigs,” which he released with Black Sabbath in 1970. Hill performed in honor of Flack, who died of cardiac arrest in February 2025 at the age of 88, and D’Angelo, who passed away in October 2025 at the age of 51 after suffering from pancreatic cancer.  The Fugees star performed a medley of D’Angelo’s hits, including “Brown Sugar,” “Lady” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” alongside Lucky Daye, Raphael Saadiq, Anthony Hamilton, and 2026 Grammy winners Jon Batiste and Leon Thomas.  Hill previously collaborated with D’Angelo on the 1998 hit “Nothing Even Matters,” which she performed solo during the tribute. She asked the internet for help with slaughtering two pigs. Thousands turned up in support

Videos and photos on social media over the weekend showed massive crowds at the family’s village home. Long queues snaked across fields as people waited for their meals.  Local authorities also stepped in, according to Chinese media reports – dispatching catering teams and workers to help Daidai and her family as well as distributing gifts and free tickets to popular tourist spots. Traffic police officers were also deployed to maintain order.  More than 10,000 people arrived in the village over two days, reports said, with thousands of vehicles also arriving in the area.  “By Saturday and Sunday, the roads leading to Qingfu village were gridlocked by a 10km traffic jam as visitors arrived from as far as Guangdong province, bringing gifts as if visiting long-lost relatives,” read an article published on the China Daily state news site. “The turnout was so massive that Daidai’s original two pigs were woefully insufficient. In total, five pigs were slaughtered to feed a rotating crowd of over 3,000 people,” the report added.  On Jan 13, Daidai shared a post …

A team from the Young-Williams Animal Center in Knoxville recently rescued two pigs stranded on a group of islands in the Tennessee River. After receiving multiple calls about the animals that appeared to be abandoned on Looney Islands, the team worked with the Knoxville Fire Department and Knox County Rescue to get to the islands. After some searching, the two pigs were found together and rescued thanks to a bit of patience and the team’s “pig whisperer.” This pig whisperer is Mary Nussbaum, the Young-Williams Animal Center’s Director of Medical Operations. Nussbaum has over 30 years of experience in veterinary medicine, including working at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and its Veterinary Medical Center. “She also is passionate about the care and protection of animals. Since the pigs were stranded on Looney Islands in January, available food resources were scarce, and the rescue team was able to lure the pigs with a whole lot of patience and several …
