Lando Norris takes Miami GP sprint pole to deny Mercedes for first time in 2026

Lando Norris takes Miami GP sprint pole to deny Mercedes for first time in 2026

It has been a long time, hasn’t it? With the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races, F1 has had an enforced and unexpected spring break after just three rounds of the new regulation set. But here we are, back in Miami for a sprint weekend, with some tweaks to the regulations. Without going into too much detail – and the new regulations are so detailed that it beggars belief – there will, of course, be hope that the tweaks make for better, more sensible racing as well as bringing some of the challengers close to leaders Mercedes. Hard to say if that has happened on the basis of one (albeit extended) practice session in Miami, but there were some fairly promising signs. Charles Leclerc was fastest for Ferrari ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, nearly 0.3sec behind, followed by Oscar Piastri, Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton and then the lead Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. George Russell, who is hoping to overturn the Italian’s championship advantage this weekend, was sixth, only marginally behind …

Horror as man batters dog to death with metal pole in UK supermarket | UK | News

Dean McKay has been jailed for 27 months (Image: Alexander Lawrie / Edinburgh Live) A man who battered a dog to death with a metal pole has been jailed for 27 months and sentenced to a lifetime ban from owning or keeping animals. Dean McKay, 38, brutally attacked a female German Shepherd named Goldie after chasing the dog’s owner, Kyle Pugh, into a Premier store in the Calder Park area of Edinburgh in May 2024. McKay kicked the dog to the body before killing her by smashing her over the head with the metal pole which broke the dog’s neck, the Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard last month. McKay was with Daniel Devlin, 39, who also confronted Mr Pugh while armed with a knife and a claw hammer. The pair fled the scene after the attack. An armed response team quickly arrived and sealed off the surrounding area. NASA–ESA partnership: Artemis II paves way for exploring Moon’s far side and south pole – Spotlight

NASA–ESA partnership: Artemis II paves way for exploring Moon’s far side and south pole – Spotlight

François Picard speaks to Didier Schmitt, head of future preparation for the European Space Agency. He says the Artemis II mission marks a key moment in contemporary space exploration. It is highly technical and collaborative – a test of systems, international partnerships, and our ability to extend human presence beyond Earth once again. He says the flyby will help validate critical technologies, from life support to propulsion, while also highlighting the growing role of Europe through the European Service Module. At the same time, he stresses the scientific importance of exploring the far side of the Moon and, in the near future, its south pole, where untouched materials may reveal the Moon’s, and by extension, the Earth’s evolutionary history. Ultimately, this mission is seen as a necessary step in a longer journey: mastering lunar exploration before venturing further into deep space, including Mars. What we are witnessing is not a return to past achievements, but laying the foundation of a new era of exploration. Kimi Antonelli makes history with Chinese GP pole after George Russell’s issues

Kimi Antonelli makes history with Chinese GP pole after George Russell’s issues

But nor should Antonelli’s achievement be diminished. The Italian’s new record – he is 19 years and 212 days old – smashed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 years and 72 days old when he took his maiden pole position at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. And he deserves immense credit for it. That crash last weekend, which Wolff joked made his drive look like “a Lego F1 car”, smashed into a million pieces, would have destroyed some drivers. As would the crash at Monza a few laps into his first free practice session a couple of years ago. But Antonelli clearly has something special. Yes, his debut season was raw. Very raw at times. Antonelli went on a run of four non-finishes in six rounds at one point last year, plus an 18th in Monaco, going into a bit of a tailspin. The scenes in the latest series of Drive to Survive, in which he admits to feelings of self-doubt and shows incredible vulnerability and humility, are some of the …

George Russell storms to Australian GP pole after Max Verstappen crashes

George Russell storms to Australian GP pole after Max Verstappen crashes

Interestingly, given he defended the new rules at testing in Bahrain last month, Norris now appears to be of the same opinion as Verstappen. That they are awful. “The problem is you have to look at the steering wheel every three seconds to see what’s going to happen, otherwise you’re going to end up off the track,” the world champion said, adding that was the reason he had not seen Antonelli’s cooling fan. “We’ve come from the best cars ever made in Formula One, and the nicest to drive, to probably the worst. It sucks, but you have to live with it and just maximise what you get given.” After Norris came the second Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton, who was the last driver to get within a second of Russell. Hamilton was actually quite upbeat afterwards, saying he had felt “solid” all weekend until Q2 when some energy deployment issues threw them. But he admitted Mercedes were in another league, accusing the Brackley team of sandbagging all weekend, and of having “two tenths or more” …

Russell takes pole as Mercedes dominate Australian Grand Prix qualifying

MELBOURNE, March 7 : George Russell took pole position and teammate Kimi Antonelli locked up the front row as Mercedes confirmed their off-season promise by dominating qualifying at Formula One’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Saturday. Briton Russell lapped Albert Park’s street circuit in one minute, 18.518 seconds, a mark that was 0.293 seconds ahead of Italian Antonelli, who came back from a huge crash in the final free practice earlier in the day. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar was third quickest but nearly eight-tenths of a second slower than Russell’s best lap, the Silver Arrows’ first pole since Lewis Hamilton in 2019. “It was a great day, we knew there was a lot of potential in the car,” said Russell. “It really came alive this afternoon. “Also really happy that Kimi’s here… All in all a pretty good day.” Antonelli had a nervous wait for his position to be confirmed after his patched-up car dropped cooling fans onto the track early in the final session of qualifying. McLaren’s defending champion Lando Norris, who qualified sixth, …

UK Athletics admits causing death of Paralympian hit on head by pole | UK News

UK Athletics has admitted causing the death of a Paralympian who was hit on the head by a metal pole. Abdullah Hayayei, 36, who represented the United Arab Emirates, was fatally injured at Newham Leisure Centre, east London, while training in 2017. He was preparing to represent his country in the F34 class discus, javelin and shot put at the World Para Athletics Championships in London when part of a throwing cage fell on him. Teams and coaches from several nations were present at the time of the tragedy. The charge said the national governing body for athletics caused the death of Mr Hayayei by “supplying for use… a discus/shot put cage which it used and operated without its base structure and which collapsed” into the Paralympian while he was practising shot putting. Alpine skiing-Vonn launches social media search mission after ski pole goes missing

Alpine skiing-Vonn launches social media search mission after ski pole goes missing

Jan 15 : Lindsey Vonn may be dominating World Cup downhills at 41, but even the U.S. speed queen is not immune to missing equipment. Vonn took to social media on Thursday with an unusual plea after losing a ski pole in Tarvisio, Italy, ahead of this weekend’s World Cup event. “Someone took my pole in the parking lot today in Tarvisio. If you have seen it please respond to this. Thank you,” Vonn wrote on X, posting a photo of the matching pole complete with her initials on the hand strap. Vonn, a favourite for the speed events at next month’s Milano-Cortina Olympics, retired from the sport in 2019 and had a partial knee replacement in April 2024 but returned to competition later that year and has been enjoying a fairy-tale comeback that has defied age and expectation. Already the oldest World Cup winner of all time, Vonn continued her astonishing, age-defying form with a downhill victory in Zauchensee, Austria last week. That triumph marked Vonn’s fourth podium from four downhills this season, cementing her …

Ruben Amorim in ‘pole position’ for new manager job days after Manchester United sacking

Ruben Amorim in ‘pole position’ for new manager job days after Manchester United sacking

Amorim’s record was deeply underwhelming, recording a win rate significantly lower than any other permanent United manager in the Premier League era. Despite leading the team to a Europa League final last season, inconsistent results and poor league form — including the club’s lowest finish in decades in his first season — contributed to his downfall. The North Pole Panopticon: Why Santa is Creepier Than You Remember

The North Pole Panopticon: Why Santa is Creepier Than You Remember

Let’s be honest: American Santa Claus is unsettling. It’s not just the sight of an overly-jolly old man breaking and entering; it’s the entire Santa Industrial Complex that feels…icky. We recently had a discussion during an internal staff meeting about the guy (spoiler alert: he’s not real). For many of us, the tradition left us with lingering feelings of betrayal, inadequacy and even fear. It should be noted that there are a few of us on the team who have fond memories with Santa. But this article isn’t for those people. We’re talking to those of you who’ve always had an ick for old Saint Nick and haven’t quite been sure why. You might be thinking, “gee, what a bunch of sticks in the mud these humanists are.” We assure you, our cynicism is sincere, because when you peel back the tinsel, the Santa myth is far more than a harmless bit of seasonal fun. As we see it, these are our main gripes: 1. False Meritocracy. The American version of Santa Claus is most …
