China Opens Investigations Into US Trade Practices in Response to Trump Tariff Moves

BEIJING (AP) — China launched two investigations into U.S. trade practices on Friday, signaling its resolve to push back against President Donald Trump’s tariffs ahead of his visit in May. A ministry statement said the two Chinese investigations were launched to safeguard the interests of relevant Chinese industries and expressed “firm opposition” to the American probes. One will examine U.S. policies that restrict Chinese goods from entering the United States and that limit U.S. export of advanced technology products to China. The other is focused on barriers to Chinese green energy exports. The probes are expected to take six months and could be extended for another three months if necessary, the ministry said. The Chinese investigations are the latest volley in a long-running trade war and could be bargaining chips to counter any possible new U.S. tariffs. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down some of Trump’s earlier tariffs, and he responded by launching what are known as Section 301 trade investigations. One of those investigations is examining allegations of excess industrial capacity — which can …

Claude Code Skills Best Practices: Why 20–30 Beats 1,000

Claude Code skills offer a structured way to enhance AI-driven workflows by combining precision, scalability and adaptability. As Simon Scrapes explains, these skills function like digital standard operating procedures (SOPs), allowing AI agents to execute tasks consistently and efficiently. A defining feature is their use of “progressive disclosure,” where only essential information is initially loaded into the AI’s context, reducing the risk of context overload. This approach ensures that even complex workflows remain streamlined and responsive, making it easier to maintain high-quality outputs without unnecessary delays or errors. In this quick-start guide, you’ll learn how to avoid common pitfalls like system overload and skill conflicts while maximizing the value of Claude Code skills. Key takeaways include strategies for limiting your skill set to 20–30 well-defined tasks, writing clear activation instructions and separating process steps from reference files for easier debugging. By the end, you’ll have actionable insights to help you create a more efficient and reliable AI workflow tailored to your specific needs. What Are Claude Code Skills? The Hidden Practices That Make Accountability Work

The Hidden Practices That Make Accountability Work

“People just don’t follow through anymore.” “No one takes ownership anymore.” “Why can’t they do what they said they would do?” While most leaders have said this, what if the problem isn’t a lack of discipline, motivation, or work ethic? What if the real issue is that leaders aren’t fully considering the invisible work of accountability? They ignore the behind‑the‑scenes structures, conversations, conditions, and mindsets that make accountability possible in the first place. Accountability does not begin with correcting poor performance; it begins long before that, in the norms, expectations, and communication practices a leader creates. When you are a leader, accountability is never something that happens in isolation. Accountability cannot be demanded into existence. Instead, accountability is co-created through clarity, support, and psychological safety. For example, take a leader who is reprioritizing a report due this Friday and has an open conversation with the coordinator who has previously mishandled deadlines. The leader no longer sees laziness as a potential issue, as they’ve created the open space, and the coordinator expressed the three competing priorities …

Open Source AI Agents: Cost Cuts, Setup Needs, and Best Practices

Building AI agents in 2026 involves navigating a rapidly evolving landscape of advanced models, open source frameworks, and practical challenges. As outlined by Tina Huang, new developments like GPT-5.2 and Claude 4.6 have expanded the capabilities of autonomous systems, offering enhanced token limits and improved functionality for complex tasks such as strategic decision-making and workflow automation. At the same time, the rise of open source solutions like LLaMA and Quen provides opportunities for customization and cost savings, though these options often require significant technical expertise and robust hardware to implement effectively. This overview covers key considerations for building AI agents, including the integration of core components like memory systems, orchestration frameworks, and guardrails to ensure functionality and security. You’ll also learn how to address challenges associated with self-hosted agents, such as managing privacy risks and implementing isolated deployments. Whether you’re exploring enterprise-level automation or personal projects, understanding these elements will help you create adaptable, secure systems tailored to your needs. Dutch regulator flags One Casino and bet365 over illegal soccer betting practices

Dutch regulator flags One Casino and bet365 over illegal soccer betting practices

The Dutch gambling watchdog has formally contacted One Casino and bet365 after discovering that both companies briefly offered betting markets that are banned under national law. The Kansspelautoriteit, known as the Ksa, confirmed the action in a statement released on Friday (February 6). At the center of the issue were wagers tied to soccer matches involving players under the age of 21. Dutch rules strictly prohibit these bets, largely because younger athletes are considered more susceptible to pressure and potential manipulation. Regulators say those risks are high enough that such markets are not allowed under any circumstances. Dutch regulator flags under-21 soccer betting violations by bet365 and One Casino The matter came to light during a broader review of betting products offered by licensed operators last year. During that review, the Ksa found that both One Casino and bet365 had listed bets on an under-21 soccer match, putting them in breach of the Wet op de kansspelen, the country’s gambling legislation that governs remote betting. According to the regulator, the violations were not the result …

Humanists UK welcomes European resolution to ban conversion practices – Humanists UK

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has voted in favour of a resolution calling on member states to introduce a legislative ban on conversion practices. The resolution follows on from a report authored by Kate Osborne MP for the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination. The report was adopted unanimously by the Committee last year. Humanists UK and its section LGBT+ Humanists, who have long campaigned for a ban on conversion practices, welcome the news. Conversion practices – also sometimes called ‘conversion therapy’ – are not only discredited but deeply harmful. Rooted in misguided beliefs, they subject LGBT people, often young and vulnerable, to practices ranging from pseudo-psychological treatments to exorcisms to extreme measures like forced marriage and ‘corrective rape’. The consequences can include lasting mental trauma, self-harm, and tragically, even suicide. Humanists UK and LGBT+ Humanists campaign for a ban on therapies, services, and other practices that have a predetermined purpose to change, deny, or suppress an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity because of prejudiced assumptions that a particular sexual orientation …

Mindfulness and Creativity: New Research and Practices

Mindfulness and Creativity: New Research and Practices

In September 2021, I penned a post for this column entitled “How to Jump-Start Your Creativity Using Mindfulness.” The piece centered on the creative implications of mindfulness as a stimulant for both imagination and inventiveness. Since that post was published, I have discovered new research and several commanding practices that underscore the importance of mindfulness as a “spark plug” for our creative endeavors. Let’s take a look. What the Research Says A 2024 empirical study of 894 secondary school students examined how dispositional mindfulness (one’s natural tendency to be mindful) was related to several creativity measures, such as divergent thinking, creative combination, and creative problem-solving. The researchers noted that mindfulness was positively associated with creative functioning and that it enhanced creativity by boosting internal psychological resources such as resilience and optimism. Another study released in 2024 sought to determine the relationship between mindfulness and scientific research creativity in graduate students. Results demonstrated that mindfulness directly predicted higher levels of research creativity. Additionally, the researchers showed that mindfulness is also a predictor of creativity, with flow …
