Trump swings from gushing praise for King to scathing criticism of Starmer in five-minute call with Sky News | US News

The president and I spoke an hour after Buckingham Palace announced details of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the United States. Over five minutes he swung from gushing praise for the King to scathing criticism for the prime minister. He rejected any suggestion that by criticising the government he is making the King’s visit awkward. Listen to the podcast here His tone and his language revealed to me how distinctly he differentiates Britain’s royals from its politicians. He also revealed that he did not know that the King’s visit is taking place at the request of the government. Our call took place at just after 6:30pm on Tuesday evening. It was the second time we have spoken by phone. These calls are not arranged. The number I have (along with a few other DC-based journalists) is for his mobile phone. In keeping with his unique style, if he picks up and he’s up for it, he talks. It is, honestly, a bizarre experience. “Hello?” he said after two rings. I introduced myself, …

In Praise of ‘Difficult’ Kids

In Praise of ‘Difficult’ Kids

In 1996, I was a freshly minted high-school history teacher offering a lesson about the presidential election. Ned, who sat in the back row, was doing what Ned always did: making his classmates laugh. He had a gift for the well-timed quip. His comebacks flew so quickly, it was as if he’d prepared them in advance. Generally, he seemed to invest more energy in entertaining the room than in whatever we were studying. A few years ago, Ned reached out to me on Facebook. He is now a high-school English teacher. In his message, he recalled in great detail the debates we’d had about the Civil War, the play our class had performed about Vietnam, the days I had assigned students to bring in a newspaper article and explain it to the class—which is when he had started reading the paper. And all this time, I’d assumed Ned hadn’t been paying attention. Truth be told, in my 30 years in schools, I’ve met a lot of kids like Ned: the ones who won’t stop with …

The Testaments Reviews: Handmaid’s Tale Sequel Wins Praise From Critics

The Testaments Reviews: Handmaid’s Tale Sequel Wins Praise From Critics

The new TV follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale is already being hailed by critics as a worthy successor to the Emmy-winning original series. Adapted from Margaret Attwood’s book of the same name, The Testaments takes place decades after the events of the Handmaid’s Tale finale, but while time has moved on, things are still as bleak as ever in Gilead. In this new chapter for the franchise, the action is centred around teenagers at a finishing school for girls being primed for marriage – which has led to surprising comparisons to everything from Gossip Girl and High School Musical to Pretty Little Liars, albeit with a nightmarish undercurrent. Led by Oscar nominee Chase Infiniti, who recently won acclaim for her work in One Battle After Another, and Bafta winner Lucy Halliday, the show has already won a wave of near-unanimously positive responses from critics. Here’s a selection of what the early reviews for The Testaments have had to say… “In some ways, it is slightly lighter and brighter than its precursor – a kind of …

Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen Reviews: Critics Heap Praise On Netflix Horror

Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is a wedding drama with deeply sinister undertones If you’re a fan of a binge-able series with a central mystery that slowly starts to unfold, Netflix has a new addition you’re going to love. Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is an unsettling new series directed by Haley Z. Boston (best known for her unsettling work in the horror genre) and executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. The show centres around a young couple – played by The White Lotus’ Adam DiMarco and Emmy nominee Camila Morrone – gearing up for their wedding, but as the big day approaches, a series of sinister events begins to unfold. And that’s pretty much all the plot that the streaming giant wants us to know before settling down to watch the new series, which arrived on the platform on Friday. Reviews so far have been pretty positive, with some of the more impressed critics calling the show “fresh and original”, a “masterclass” in tension and “one of …

People Praise Grandmother’s Reaction To Daughter’s Pregnancy

People Praise Grandmother’s Reaction To Daughter’s Pregnancy

While a pregnancy announcement is often taken as good news, one grandmother had a different reaction when her child revealed her third pregnancy in a video. Most people were on the grandma’s side when it came to her response. That’s not exactly typical, but when it comes to raising kids, if you don’t have enough time or money to handle the ones you’ve already brought into the world, it’s probably best not to have another. Raising kids is a whole lot harder than getting pregnant, and according to the viewers watching the video, this grandma had a good point. After revealing their third pregnancy, one couple’s mother appeared disappointed. In the now private video, the couple is seen sitting in the backyard of their house with their mother when they decide to announce their third pregnancy. There is a sonogram of the couple’s third baby in their mother’s hands as they record her reaction, predicting it would be one of joy. Ireland full of praise for ‘outstanding’ Wales after hard-fought win

Ireland full of praise for ‘outstanding’ Wales after hard-fought win

DUBLIN, March 6 : Ireland coach Andy Farrell and his players were full of praise for Wales on Friday after the Six Nations strugglers pushed their opponents mightily hard for the second successive week, progress the Welsh captain described as “monumental”. The 2021 champions, who have not won a Six Nations game in three years and conceded 102 points in the first two rounds of this campaign, followed up their agonising loss to Scotland two weeks ago by pushing Ireland all the way in Friday’s 27-17 loss. While Farrell bemoaned his inconsistent side’s lack of game management and propensity to overplay, particularly in failing to add on to an early lead, he credited the bottom-placed Wales with making their life incredibly hard. “The frustrations were that you don’t get it all your own way in test matches, and nor should you and that’s all credit to Wales and the way they went about their business. I thought they were outstanding,” Farrell said. “They were outstanding in defence, hit unbelievably hard and have improved constantly throughout …

FEDERICO PARRA / AFP Delcy Rodriguez’s compliance with US demands has drawn lavish praise from Donald Trump, who had once threatened Venezuela with violence. Writing on his Truth Social account on Wednesday, March 4, he said the interim president was “doing a great job and working with US Representatives very well.” “The Oil is beginning to flow, and the professionalism and dedication between both Countries is a very nice thing to see,” he wrote. Rodriguez, for her part, thanked Trump on Telegram for his administration’s “kind willingness to work together for the benefit of the people of the United States and Venezuela.” On Tuesday, Venezuelan state oil firm PDVSA announced the signing of new oil contracts with the United States. Nick Robinson Slams Ed Davey Over Past Prince Andrew Praise

Nick Robinson Slams Ed Davey Over Past Prince Andrew Praise

Nick Robinson skewered Ed Davey over his past praise for the “excellent job” the then Prince Andrew was doing as the UK’s trade envoy. The Lib Dem leader was left embarrassed during an excruciating grilling on Radio 4′s Today programme. Davey is forcing a vote in the House of Commons today which could force the government to publish all documents relating to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment and performance as trade envoy. He said: “I think we’ve seen too often in the past that people, because of their title or their friends or whatever, have not been properly held to account. “The rules of the House of Commons have prevented, and Speakers have overseen this over the centuries, prevented MPs from criticising members of the Royal Family and sometimes even mentioning them, and that really seems old fashioned and is the wrong thing to do.” But Robinson told him: “It’s what you did when you were a minister though, isn’t it?” Davey then admitted praising the job the then Prince Andrew did as UK trade envoy during …
