On styling for awards season and the Chanel pre-Oscars party

On styling for awards season and the Chanel pre-Oscars party

Oscar campaigns are not won, they are endured. There are parties, festivals, For Your Consideration screenings, press junkets and talk show appearances. The night before the Academy Awards, I found myself — not an important person in the industry by any means — at two separate parties. Imagine if you’re a nominee, getting shuttled to and fro, shaking hands and making small talk. At the first event, I caught a glimpse of the legendary actor Minnie Driver, who was nominated for supporting actress for the film “Good Will Hunting” in 1998. She posed, smiled and looked as glamorous as ever. And, with an extreme amount of grace, she disappeared through a door in the back. Poof. Gone. And like magic, she reappeared on the carpet right in front of me, at Chanel’s legendary pre-Oscar dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She dazzled in a sparkling gown, a totally different outfit than the one I’d seen just an hour prior. After years of being in L.A., I’m not particularly starstruck anymore, but at this moment, I …

Minnie Driver, Paul Anthony Kelly, and More Famous Faces Enjoy a Pre-Oscars Celebration With Giorgio Armani

Rodeo Drive, on any given day in Los Angeles, always has a number of tourists really there not to shop but to hopefully spot some celebrities. But Rodeo Drive, on the night before the Oscars—where Giorgio Armani annually holds a cocktail party for notable friends of the Italian house—basically only has tourists hoping to spot a celebrity. On March 14, they packed the entire block, cell phones and notebooks out. (The autograph is apparently alive and well! Who knew?) When a famous face did arrive, they screamed their name at the top of their lungs: Samuel! (For Samuel L. Jackson.) Minnie! (For Minnie Driver.) Ali! (For Ali Larter.) Although it didn’t even need to be a specific moniker. “Famous People!” I heard a woman shout into the ether as I walked into the store. Which was, thanks to a hidden DJ or perhaps just an excellent speaker system, bumping. Most of the guests wore black or navy, two colors synonymous with the brand. (Well, with the exception of Maura Higgins—the reality TV star of the …

Inside Chanel and Charles Finch’s Glamorous Pre-Oscars Dinner at the Polo Lounge

Inside Chanel and Charles Finch’s Glamorous Pre-Oscars Dinner at the Polo Lounge

Ah, yes, the aforementioned Charles Finch. The producer, former head of W.M.E.’s International Motion Picture division, and son of legendary actor Peter Finch—the first person to win a posthumous Oscar—has been hosting a dinner the Saturday before the Academy Awards for over thirty years. In 2020, Finch told the Los Angeles Times it started simply because he just wanted to see all his friends (which included names like Al Pacino and Bill Murray) who came into town for the awards show. “It became this wild night at Mr. Chow’s, and after we destroyed the place, Michael Chow said, ‘That’s one too many. Next time you can either pay or find someone else to do it,’” Finch told the paper. Suffice to say, he did: in 2009, Chanel officially began co-hosting the evening alongside him. At first, they did so at Italian restaurant Madeo in West Hollywood. In 2019, they moved to the Polo Lounge. Yet despite the addition of a high-fashion sponsor, an expanded guest list, and a red carpet, Finch likes to keep the …
