America isn’t prepared for what comes after the measles crisis

America isn’t prepared for what comes after the measles crisis

In the first three months of 2026, America logged roughly 1,600 measles cases — nearly as many as the total number for all of 2025, which was by far the worst year we’ve seen for the highly infectious virus in decades. In fact, because we’ve had more than 12 straight months of continuous measles spread, the nation should soon lose the measles elimination status we achieved back in 2000. I say “should” because Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was granted a delay of the April 13 meeting of the Pan American Health Organization, where officials were expected to reach that embarrassing conclusion, until its annual meeting, which is scheduled for after the midterm elections. A coincidence, no doubt. It’s disgraceful and dangerous that instead of acting to prevent the spread of preventable diseases like measles, the secretary and his cadre of mad scientists are playing politics and spreading misinformation — and putting American lives at risk. As Kennedy faces rounds of congressional hearings, including before two Senate committees that include four Republican …

You Are Not Prepared to Learn the Size of Neanderthal Infants

You Are Not Prepared to Learn the Size of Neanderthal Infants

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Neanderthal babies were apparently bigger — and grew faster — than familiar human tykes. At least, El Pais reports, that’s the conclusion from a team of scientists based in Israel and Europe who analyzed the remains of a six-month-old Neanderthal ankle biter who was downright colossal, at a comparable size to a one-year-old homo sapien. That means the babies of Neanderthals, extinct cousins to us contemporary humans, were real life versions of the distinctly sturdy cave baby Bamm-Bamm Rubble from the iconic animated show “The Flintstones” The scientists noticed that while the skeletal remains of the Neanderthal child, buried in a cave in Northern Israel about 51,000 to 56,000 years ago, sported relatively thick bones and a large skull that made it seem older, the development of its teeth betrayed its younger age, as detailed in a new paper in the journal Current Biology. “I believe that the histological age of the teeth is more accurate than age …

Germany prepared to send minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz – POLITICO

Germany prepared to send minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz – POLITICO

The minesweeping plan was first reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung. Merz reiterated his government’s position after meeting Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Berlin on Thursday. He stressed that Germany is “fundamentally ready” to help secure shipping routes, but only under strict conditions. Those include a stable ceasefire, a mandate within a system of collective security — “preferably” from the United Nations — and formal approval by both the federal government and the Bundestag. Merz underlined that Berlin remains “far away” from such a decision. The signal comes as a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is in effect but has yet to fully stabilize the situation in the strait, where Iran blocked traffic and the U.S. responded by blocking Iranian vessels. U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed NATO allies to move quickly, demanding commitments “within days” following his meeting with alliance Secretary-General Mark Rutte in early April. However, allies have been leery of getting involved in any combat action in the war started by Trump without consulting them. Source link

Tempo Prepared Meal Subscription Review (2026): Surprisingly Tasty

Tempo Prepared Meal Subscription Review (2026): Surprisingly Tasty

If you have eating restrictions, you’ll likely see even more repetition. My colleague Kat Merck, who tested GLP-1-appropriate meals—and also stated a preference for no fish—found herself drowning in a sea of chicken on the six meals she tried. She found the portions appropriate to those on GLP-1 meds, and appreciated that the meals offered her the proteins she needs to maintain muscle mass even while chemically un-hungry. But still: chicken. After eating five of her six meals, she wrote, “I don’t think I had one I didn’t end up liking, but they were absolutely repetitive. Chicken chicken chicken chicken.” The sixth meal she ate, a mushroom cream chicken, was the only utter failure. The chicken tasted different from the chicken in other dishes either of us tried, she noted: thick, dry, slathered in viscous cream with no sign of the advertised mushrooms. It was a little sad, a reminder of TV dinners past. But if anything, that failed meal cast into relief just how surprisingly well-managed most of the proteins turned out to be. …

‘Warning lights for a coming war are flashing red – and Britain is not prepared’ | UK News

Almost all warnings and indicators that a wider war is coming are flashing red and it is “breathtaking” that the UK government is failing to better prepare, a top academic has warned. Dr Rob Johnson, director of the Changing Character of Conflict Centre at Oxford University, said China is taking the steps that would be expected to have the ability to attack Taiwan, while Russia could well be readying to launch military operations against a NATO country. This comes on top of Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which is in its fifth year, and the US and Israeli war against Iran. Mr Johnson has compiled a list of 80 “indicators of conflict preparation and coming armed attack” by drawing on the lessons of history, including the run up to the Second World War. The indicators cover the kind of military activity and hostile diplomacy demonstrated by a nation that is preparing to launch an armed attack, as well as societal changes and government information campaigns. Asked how many of them are already flashing, Mr …

How a bomb disposal expert prepared Bond hopeful Aaron Taylor-Johnson for his new role – by blowing up a pig’s head

Over the last two decades, Nick Orr’s career as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist for both the British Army and voluntary organisations in war-torn countries has seen him working in all sorts of dangerous, life-threatening situations. But for one of his latest assignments, Orr found himself doing something very different: advising on a star-studded, big-budget film project. Fuze, which arrives in UK cinemas this weekend, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as an Afghanistan veteran and bomb disposal expert who is urgently called in to assist when an unexploded WWII bomb is discovered on a busy construction site in the centre of London. From there, the film takes all sorts of twists and turns – incorporating a heist element – with other key cast members including Theo James and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Orr – who has worked everywhere from Afghanistan, Mali and Iraq to Kuwait, Ukraine and Gaza – had been emailed asking if he’d put his name down for consideration as an adviser and, from what he’s heard, his was the only CV the production team read …

Report finds UK not fully prepared for severe space weather effects

Report finds UK not fully prepared for severe space weather effects

A new report from the National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed that while the UK has built resilience against severe space weather effects, preparedness still falls short. It found that whilst forecasting capabilities for severe space weather have improved, understanding of how to respond to such emergencies remains low. With recent solar storms posing significant issues for spacecraft and satellite operators, the NAO report recommends that more should be done overall to improve resilience. It sets out the most serious acute risks facing the UK in the government’s classified National Security Risk Assessment (NSRA) and public-facing National Risk Register. Widespread effects of severe space weather events Space weather originates from solar activity and mostly causes no tangible disruption. However, severe space weather can disrupt a range of technologies. For example, an event could cause the widespread disruption of air travel for multiple weeks, localised power outages in the UK, and disruption to satellite services such as satellite navigation and timing services used by many sectors. The potential economic cost of an extreme event was estimated …
