OpenAI drastically updates Codex desktop app to use all other apps on your computer, generate images, preview webpages

Confirming it has reached 3 million weekly developers, OpenAI is massively updating its Codex developer environment via its Mac and Windows desktop apps today to bring it closer to the “Super App” the company has confirmed it is pursuing. Before today, Codex was primarily an environment for using OpenAI’s underlying language models to write, edit, debug and ship software as directed by the user. Now, Codex will be able to access all of the other apps on your computer, surface relevant information from within them to you when asked or proactively, take actions as directed in said applications, and, in the case of Mac users, even do so while you continue manually using your computer simultaneously to your agents working in the background. Andrew Ambrosino, an OpenAI technical staffer on the Codex team, described the change plainly in an embargoed press briefing I attended virtually yesterday: “Codex can actually click on apps, launch apps, and type into apps. This works with any apps on your machine.”  Codex on desktop is further getting its own built-in …

Emmys Preview: Will “The Pitt” and “Hacks” Dominate?

Emmys Preview: Will “The Pitt” and “Hacks” Dominate?

It’s a good time to be a fan of TV. We’re getting a flurry of new and returning shows in the coming weeks, so the Little Gold Men team felt it was time to take stock of the TV landscape as Emmy season kicks off, with nominations slated for July 8 (it’s not as far away as you might think!). Just this week, the fifth and final season of Hacks debuts, which is sure to be a front-runner for the comedy categories. The show, which stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, has won 12 Emmys, including four best-actress-in-a-comedy trophies for Smart. The final season sees the pair working together to get Deborah’s career and legacy on the right path. WIth The Studio filming its second season and not eligible this year, there are other returning comedies that feel competitive, like Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, and Shrinking. But we’re keeping an eye on The Comeback, which has never been nominated for the comedy-series award before. The third season, which follows Lisa Kudrow’s …

Subaru unveils Getaway, a 420hp 3-row EV SUV, and we got a sneak preview

Subaru just revealed its new Getaway EV, a 420hp three-row SUV. But we got a sneak preview last month in California for the inside scoop. The New York Auto Show is kicking off this week, and Subaru announced a new 3-row electric SUV this morning. But instead of heading over to see it in New York, we got to see it last month in the middle of a wintertime California heatwave (which was a result of climate change, caused by gas-powered vehicles). Subaru invited us up to Malibu to have a look at the car ahead of its release, though we only got to look at it and sit in it, and not drive it around yet. Advertisement – scroll for more content The Getaway is another result of the EV tie-up between Subaru and Toyota. In February, Toyota revealed its 3-row Highlander EV, and now we’re seeing the Subaru version of the same. Much like the Subaru Uncharted, Solterra and Trailseeker, the two companies collaborated on the Getaway/Highlander EV. But all three of those …

Safari Technology Preview Turns 10: A Decade of Testing Apple’s Web Technologies

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Safari Technology Preview, a version of Safari that’s aimed at testing new web technologies. Apple first announced ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ for Mac on March 30, 2016, and rolled it out that same day. At the time, Apple said that it wanted to get feedback from developers on browser development using a method more easily accessible than WebKit. “Get a sneak peek at upcoming web technologies in macOS and iOS with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ and experiment with these technologies in your websites and extensions,” reads the description on Apple’s developer website. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can be used side-by-side with the main Safari browser, and it can be set as the default if users prefer it. Though it is designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download and use. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ has a purple icon to distinguish it from the standard version of Safari. STP is compatible with macOS Sequoia and macOS Tahoe right now, and when macOS 27 launches, it will work with ‌macOS 27‌ …

Walk into any American airport today, and you might end up in a security line that extends past the baggage claim. You might hear a muffled voice announcing over the intercom that your flight has—once again—been delayed. And you might have to pay even more for this experience. Airfare has spiked since the start of the war in Iran, as airlines cope with rising jet-fuel prices and the new risks of flying in and around the Middle East. Business Insider found that the average price of a flight from one end of the United States to the other rose from $167 in February to $414 in mid-March. Outside the country, ticket prices for major routes connecting Europe and Asia have surged, per data from Alton Aviation Consultancy: The Hong Kong–London route is 560 percent more expensive than it was …

February Payrolls Preview: “For This Print, The Stronger The Better”

February Payrolls Preview: “For This Print, The Stronger The Better”

The February jobs report is expected to show 55k jobs added to the US economy in the month, a sharp drop from 130k in January but slightly above the Fed’s 50k breakeven estimate. Private payrolls are expected to rise by 60k versus the prior 172k. The unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 4.3%, while wages are seen rising 0.3% M/M and 3.7% Y/Y. According toi Newsquawk, the data will be used to gauge Fed rate cut expectations, while some on the FOMC, including Waller, will use it to decide whether to vote for a rate cut or hold in March, although the Fed is expected to keep rates on hold barring any drastic change in the current situation or outlook. Recent proxies have been mixed: the ADP report was strong, while the ISM PMI employment sub-components showed improvement in both manufacturing and services, though manufacturing remained in contractionary territory. Initial jobless claims for the reference week were steady over comparable periods, while continuing claims rose slightly. The Conference Board reported a modest improvement …

The Texas Senate Primary Was a Preview of Creator Wars to Come

The Texas Senate Primary Was a Preview of Creator Wars to Come

On Tuesday, James Talarico, a 36-year-old Presbyterian seminarian and state representative from Austin, Texas, defeated congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in what has become one of the most closely watched primary races so far this year. While both candidates boast immense social media followings—Talarico with 1.6 million followers and Crockett with 2.6 million followers on TikTok—it wasn’t just the candidates who drove the conversation. It was the creators around them, who offer a preview of the digital fights to come throughout the midterms and, ultimately, the 2028 presidential race. The Talarico and Crockett campaigns ran distinctly different digital strategies. Crockett has built her congressional brand on confrontation, going massively viral last year after calling out Marjorie Taylor Greene for having a “bleach-blonde, bad-built, butch body” and telling Elon Musk to “fuck off.” Talarico’s digital presence reads more like a populist sermon delivered over his own social media accounts. He’s carried these preachings to unconventional platforms, like the Joe Rogan Experience, that rewarded him with countless viral clips. But for the most part, the incendiary aspects of the …
