Best Laser Printers I’ve Tried (2026): Brother, HP, and More

If you print more than the average person, you may want to consider ditching traditional ink printers for a laser printer at home. Laser printers have a few advantages over inkjet printers, the biggest of which is speed. Because there’s no ink to dry, laser printers generally print much faster. They also tend to be more cost effective, with toner cartridges costing more than ink cartridges up front, but printing more pages, although I’ve generally found ink tank printers even more economical if that’s your main concern. The biggest downside to laser printers is typically a lower level of detail, particularly when mixing colors, so you’ll want to opt for something else if you plan on printing full color photos. Because they use heat to bond the toner with the paper, they may melt paper with plastic in it, like windowed envelopes or sticker sheets, so you’ll want to avoid them if anything but matte paper and cardstock are in the cards for you. While I spent time with all of the printers below and …

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Recycling Old Laptops and Printers

We’ve all got that “shelf of shame” in our homes — a graveyard of ancient laptops, tangled power bricks and printers that haven’t seen an ink cartridge since 2010. Letting this e-waste sit in your house is a waste of space, but most people assume that recycling tech requires a trip to a waste facility in the middle of nowhere. The reality is much simpler. Major retailers like Best Buy and Staples have become drop-off hubs for your digital junk. You can walk into a store with a dead PC or a clunky old scanner and hand it over for free, regardless of where you bought it. Some of these places will even throw you a bone — like a discount on new gear or a trade-in credit — just for helping them reclaim the heavy metals and plastics that don’t belong in a landfill. It’s the easiest way to reclaim your storage space without feeling like a jerk for tossing electronics in the trash. This story is part of 12 Days of Tips, helping …

Save $100 On Our Favorite Home Printer

While testing printers usually isn’t that exciting, sometimes I find an offering that’s almost too good to be true. You can scoop up our favorite printer, the Epson ET-2980, from Best Buy for just $220, a $100 markdown from the usual price tag. You’ll get thousands of pages of excellent printing, and it could be years before you have to buy a refill. One of the most appealing features for any ink tank printer is the low cost to print. As I discussed in my review of the Epson, classic ink cartridges are generally expensive to replace, and manufacturers are increasingly looking for ways to keep you from using less expensive, and often less reliable, third-party cartridges. Ink in bottles is far harder to restrict, which means ink costs are often much lower per page. To that end, the Epson claims that the bottles included with the ET-2980 should last around 5,000 pages, and replacements are only about $50. Compare that with upwards of $100 for a set of cartridges that only print 1,000 pages …

The 10 best wireless printers for home use

The 10 best wireless printers for home use

This could be a problem with the printer or the Wi-Fi, or could just be the printer reacting to another problem. Rule out the obvious things first. Check the printer queue from a PC or Mac to see if anything’s blocking your print from coming through. Also check the printer isn’t suffering from any physical blockages, such as a paper jam. If that doesn’t solve anything, it’s worth switching off all the devices you’re using, waiting 30 seconds, then switching them back on again. Hopefully this process of resetting everything will be enough to sort the problem out. A common problem with network printing and Wi-Fi is when your Wi-Fi router uses the same name for both its 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. This is so your devices can easily flip between the two to get the best connection available in different parts of the house. Problems arise, however, if your printer is sitting on one network and the device you’re printing from is on another. This can be difficult to spot if they use the …
