UAE leaves OPEC and OPEC+ in huge blow to global oil producers’ group

UAE leaves OPEC and OPEC+ in huge blow to global oil producers’ group

“The UAE withdrawal marks a significant shift for OPEC. Alongside Saudi Arabia, it is one of the few members with meaningful spare capacity- the mechanism through which the group exerts market influence,” said Jorge Leon, an analyst at Rystad. “While near-term effects may be muted given ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the longer-term implication is a structurally weaker OPEC.  “Outside the group, the UAE would have both the incentive and the ability to increase production, raising broader questions about the sustainability of Saudi Arabia’s role as the market’s central stabiliser – and pointing to a potentially more volatile oil market as OPEC’s capacity to smooth supply imbalances diminishes,” he said. ICIS’ director of energy and refining Ajay Parmar said the UAE’s decision to leave the groups was not a surprise given that the country has been in disagreement with general OPEC policy for quite some time. “So it’s not a surprise, but it will certainly have a significant impact in the long term. It also signifies the general drift in the historically strong …

Gen V producers are committed to characters as The Boys spin-off axed

As the fifth and final season of The Boys continues to release new episodes weekly, fans will undoubtedly be consoling themselves about the show coming to an end with the knowledge that the universe the show’s characters inhabits will continue. Well, sadly, that universe just got a little smaller, as it has now been confirmed that college-set spin-off Gen V has been cancelled after two seasons. The show’s second season debuted in October 2025, and ended with Jaz Sinclair’s Marie and her friends being recruited by Annie/Starlight and A-Train to join the fight against Homelander. They have not yet appeared in The Boys season 5, but will later in the season. Gen V executive producers Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg said in a statement, in reference to the show’s cancellation: “While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the Gen V characters’ stories in The Boys season five and other VCU projects on the horizon. You’ll see them again.” Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau in Gen …

Civil case against Alec Baldwin, ‘Rust’ movie producers advances toward a trial

Civil case against Alec Baldwin, ‘Rust’ movie producers advances toward a trial

Nearly two years after actor Alec Baldwin was cleared of criminal charges in the “Rust” movie shooting death, a long simmering civil negligence case is inching toward a trial this fall. On Friday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied a summary judgment motion requested by the film producers Rust Movie Productions LLC, as well as actor-producer Baldwin and his firm El Dorado Pictures to dismiss the case. During a hearing, Superior Court Judge Maurice Leiter set an Oct. 12 trial date. The negligence suit was brought more than four years ago by Serge Svetnoy, who served as the chief lighting technician on the problem-plagued western film. Svetnoy was close friends with cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and held her in his arms as she lay dying on the floor of the New Mexico movie set. Baldwin’s firearm had discharged, launching a .45 caliber bullet, which struck and killed her. The Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, N.M. in 2021. (Jae C. Producers Guild Sets PGA Awards Dates for 2027 and 2028

Producers Guild Sets PGA Awards Dates for 2027 and 2028

We’re not even halfway through 2026, but on Tuesday afternoon, three major Hollywood organizations revealed the dates of their 2027 and 2028 awards ceremonies. First up was the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Oscars, around which the rest of the awards-industrial complex revolves. Then came SAG-AFTRA and the Actor Awards. And now, the Producers Guild of America has announced that its PGA Awards ceremony, which was held in 2026 on Saturday, Feb. 28, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27, in 2027 and on Saturday, Feb. 19, in 2028. Notably, the 2027 PGA Awards ceremony will take place during the final round of Oscars voting (which will run Feb. 25-March 4), increasing the possibility that the selection of the guild’s members could influence the selection of the Academy’s members. (The guild is also the only major awards body other than the Academy to choose its winners via a preferential ballot.) The Producers Guild also announced a number of other key dates pertaining to the 2025-2026 awards season: Eligibility Period for 2027 …

US Firm Takes Control Of One Of The “World’s Largest” Cobalt Producers

US Firm Takes Control Of One Of The “World’s Largest” Cobalt Producers

An American company has secured control of one of the largest cobalt producers outside Chinese ownership, delivering a strategic boost to U.S. efforts to compete with Beijing over critical minerals, according to the Wall Street Journal. The buyer, Virtus Minerals, completed its acquisition of Congo-based Chemaf for $30 million, along with a pledge to invest roughly $720 million. The deal caps a years-long push, spanning both the Biden and Trump administrations, to ensure U.S. access to cobalt resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chemaf’s mines can supply about 5% of global cobalt output—a key material used in fighter jets, smartphones, and electric vehicle batteries. Virtus says future production will be directed toward American and allied buyers. Despite its value, Chemaf proved difficult to sell. U.S. companies were wary of its heavy debt—around $1 billion—along with reputational concerns and the challenges of operating in Congo, including weak infrastructure, corruption risks, and labor issues. The company has a controversial history. Its Mutoshi mine has faced repeated problems with unsafe working conditions and incursions by informal miners. …

From chemical producers to sento baths, Japan feels the heat from Middle East supply crisis

From chemical producers to sento baths, Japan feels the heat from Middle East supply crisis

TOKYO, March 19 : Japanese companies, from steel producers to chemical firms and even sento baths, are feeling the heat from reduced Middle East energy supplies, even as the government tapped stockpiles for a record oil release to soften the blow.  Japan relies on the Middle East for around 90 per cent of its oil supplies, which mainly flow via the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively closed as a result of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. JFE Steel, Japan’s second-biggest steelmaker, on Thursday shut down one of the five power generation facilities in southwestern Hiroshima prefecture, due to the shortage of heavy oil, a spokesperson said. The spokesperson said steelmaking facilities at JFE, a unit of JFE Holdings, are operating as usual. The move adds to the growing number of businesses suffering from the energy supply disruptions.  OIL CRUNCH MAY BOOST NUCLEAR Petrochemical companies are cutting output amid fuel shortages and rising costs, with Mitsubishi Chemical saying it will raise prices by at least 70 yen ($0.4395) per kilogramme from March 20 for products …

2026 Producers Guild Awards Winners List

2026 Producers Guild Awards Winners List

The 2026 Producers Guild Awards is taking place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The ceremony’s top trophy, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, has historically served as the best predictor of who will win best picture at the Oscars, because of the similar membership size between PGA and the Academy and both of their use of the weighted preferential ballot. Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, Sinners, Train Dreams and Weapons are this year’s nominees for that honor. A total of 10 categories will be announced, alongside awards for animated motion picture and a wide range of TV offerings. Four awards were handed out ahead of Saturday night’s ceremony, with Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Sesame Street, Adolescence: The Making of Adolescence and The Wizard of Oz as those early winners. In addition to the competitive prizes, three special honors are being presented: Amy Pascal will receive the David O. Selznick Award, Jason Blum the Milestone Award and Mara Brock Akil the Norman Lear Award. Presenters …
