Are you breathing properly? How I found out I wasn’t | Well actually

We’re often taught that breathing is automatic. We barely think about it, as with blinking or the quiet, constant work of the heart. But many otherwise healthy adults have dysfunctional breathing. “Dysfunctional breathing, also known as breathing pattern disorder, is when breathlessness and/or difficulty in breathing is felt,” said Dr Stephen Fowler, a professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Manchester. It can occur outside the context of any disease. If a related condition is present, like asthma, the breathlessness might feel disproportionate to that condition, he said. Because we often don’t think much about it, many people do not know their breathing is problematic. For instance, I had panic attacks for more than a decade. They usually happened at night, and I woke up feeling exhausted and out of breath. When I was eventually diagnosed with panic and anxiety, I thought feeling out of breath was linked. I found out later that my physical pattern of inhaling and exhaling itself was out of sync. It wasn’t just in my head – my breathing …

The strength training move everyone should learn and how to do it properly

If you want an exercise that trains your glutes, hamstrings, quads, core, lower back and even your grip, the deadlift is hard to beat. It’s a highly effective, full-body move—but for beginners, it can feel intimidating, especially since proper technique is essential. Ben LaNeve, an NSCA-certified strength and conditioning specialist and personal training lead at Life Time Annapolis, suggests starting with the dumbbell deadlift instead. “You don’t need a barbell. You don’t need a weight rack. You don’t need a garage gym that looks like it belongs on YouTube,” he tells Fit&Well. “A pair of dumbbells and a few square feet of space will do just fine.” That makes it especially good for people who are new to strength training or if you’re working out at home. Article continues below You may like One of the biggest benefits of the deadlift—dumbbell or otherwise—is how effectively it strengthens the posterior chain—the muscles along the back of your body. Building strength here can improve athletic performance, particularly for activities like running. Additionally, LaNeve says, “this exercise improves …

I cleaned my earbuds properly for the first time and the difference was immediate

Earbuds are incredibly convenient for anyone who wants to listen to something while they’re on the go. Whether you’re commuting and want to listen to your favorite podcast or you are doing yard work and need the latest albums to get through the monotony, earbuds are often easier to use than larger headphones. Popping in earbuds gives you the audio that you need with more functionality in terms of movement. The more advanced the earbuds are, the more features they’ll have. This is why upper-echelon options like Apple or Bose deliver effective noise cancellation and impressive audio quality. However, no matter what brand of earbuds you have, they aren’t safe from buildup in the ear holes or other classic maintenance issues. If you take the time to clean them properly, you’ll notice a difference in how they wear. Related I Love Earbuds, but They Have These 5 Undeniable Problems As convenient as earbuds are, they’re certainly not perfect. Earbuds can come in many different shapes Each of them has a central core design Hannah Stryker …

Your spreadsheets shouldn’t look like a rainbow — use conditional formatting properly

Your spreadsheets shouldn’t look like a rainbow — use conditional formatting properly

When you see a traffic light, you don’t have to stop and think about what red or green means. You just know what to do because your brain can decode the signal instantly. The colors follow a clear, familiar system that doesn’t require explanation every time you see it. Now, imagine opening a spreadsheet where every other cell is a different shade of green, yellow, orange, or red, and you have to pause and work out what each color is trying to tell you. Instead of the colors in your sheets helping you understand the data faster, they’ll force you to slow down and decode the legend before anything makes sense. Most of us have either built one of these spreadsheets or had to sit across from one in a meeting. The good news is that this problem is easy to fix once you rethink how you use color. Keep it simple One color, one meaning Screenshot by Ada The biggest mistake you can make with conditional formatting is using too much of it. It’s …

NotebookLM still can’t export properly, so I use these workarounds instead

NotebookLM is one of the best research tools available right now; until you try to get your notes out of it. Despite a December 2025 update that added a native export button, the feature only sends content to Google Docs or Sheets. No PDF, no Markdown, no plain text. If you work outside the Google ecosystem or want real formatting control, you hit a small bump. And what if you want to preserve all your chats and prompts? There’s no elegant option yet. But like everything else in life, there are workarounds. You also know that if an app works in Chrome, extensions often ride to the rescue. OS Android, iOS, Web-based app Developer Google Pricing model Free The “Export to Docs” button does the job with limitations But only if Google Docs is your final destination In December 2025, NotebookLM added a native export option. In the Studio panel, click the three-dot menu next to any Note or Report, and you’ll see Export to Docs. Content with tables automatically routes to Google Sheets. It’s …

The one person he couldn’t keep it from though was his father, Shaun. “I told him ‘this crazy thing has happened…’ He said, ‘it’s about time.’ Dad is my biggest fan, but I only believed it was happening when they invited me to the Cabinet office and for a private tour of Downing Street on 29 December.” Chef Ryan was being honoured for his work at Life Kitchen, the not-for-profit cookery school helping cancer patients rediscover the joy of food, set up by Riley and his best …

11 Strange Things That Immediately Tell You A House Is Not Being Maintained Properly

From the moment you step into someone’s house, the details of how they’ve arranged their space can tell you how taken care of that space is. While some signs of neglect are more obvious than others, like an overgrown lawn or a noticeable hole in the roof, there are other subtle but strange things that immediately tell you a house is not being maintained properly. Even when things look normal at first glance, there’s always little things that give it away. Maybe it’s the paint chipping and peeling in certain places or the front door creaks every single time it’s being opened or shut. Most people might walk past these things without thinking anything of it, but these little quirks tell you a lot about how well a home is cared for by the owner. There’s nothing easy about owning a home, though. It’s often described as a money-pit, where you’re constantly having to spend on things that need to be fixed or else it could lead to a much bigger problem. Some homeowners have …
