Housing costs are crippling many Americans. Here’s how the two parties propose to fix that

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump’s promises on affordability in 2024 helped propel him to a second term in the White House. Since then, Trump says, the problem has been solved: He now calls affordability a hoax perpetrated by Democrats. Yet the high cost of living, especially housing, continues to weigh heavily on voters, and has dragged down the president’s approval ratings. In a poll conducted this month by the New York Times and Siena University, 58% of respondents said they disapprove of the way the president is handling the economy. How the economy fares in the coming months will play an outsize role in determining whether the Democrats can build on their electoral success in 2025 and seize control of one or both chambers of Congress. With housing costs so central to voters’ perceptions about the economy, both parties have put forward proposals in recent weeks targeting affordability. Here is a closer look at their competing plans for expanding housing and reining in costs: How bad is the affordability crisis? Nationwide, wages have barely crept up over the …

West Virginia Lawmakers Propose Bitcoin Investments With State Funds

West Virginia Lawmakers Propose Bitcoin Investments With State Funds

Authored by Micah Zimmerman via Bitcoin Magazine, West Virginia lawmakers introduced legislation this week that would authorize the state treasurer to invest a portion of public funds in bitcoin, precious metals, and regulated stablecoins, marking a significant step toward integrating digital assets into state-level finance. West Virginia Senate Bill 143, introduced by Sen. Chris Rose during the 2026 regular legislative session, would create a new section of state law titled the “Inflation Protection Act of 2026.” The measure permits the Board of Treasury Investments to allocate up to 10% of funds it oversees into gold, silver, platinum, and certain digital assets, subject to existing investment rules. Under the bill, the West Virginia could invest in digital assets that maintained an average market capitalization above $750 billion over the prior calendar year. That threshold currently limits eligibility to only bitcoin, without naming the asset directly in statute.  At the end of the digital bill, there is text that says “The purpose of this bill is to empower the Treasurer to invest in gold, silver, and bitcoin.”  The bill also allows …

Democrats across US propose state laws restricting ICE after Minneapolis shooting

Democrats in multiple states have pushed legislation attempting to rein in federal immigration enforcement after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis last week.  Good’s death sparked protests nationwide against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which have featured the deployment of ICE and Customs and Border Protection personnel to Democratic-run… Source link

EPA Says It Will Propose Drinking Water Limit for Perchlorate, but Only Because Court Ordered It

EPA Says It Will Propose Drinking Water Limit for Perchlorate, but Only Because Court Ordered It

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday said it would propose a drinking water limit for perchlorate, a harmful chemical in rockets and other explosives, but also said doing so wouldn’t significantly benefit public health and that it was acting only because a court ordered it. The agency said it will seek input on how strict the limit should be for perchlorate, which is particularly dangerous for infants, and require utilities to test. The agency’s move is the latest in a more than decade-long battle over whether to regulate perchlorate. The EPA said that the public benefit of the regulation did not justify its expected cost. “Due to infrequent perchlorate levels of health concern, the vast majority of the approximately 66,000 water systems that would be subject to the rule will incur substantial administrative and monitoring costs with limited or no corresponding public health benefits as a whole,” the agency wrote in its proposal. Perchlorate is used to make rockets, fireworks and other explosives, although it can also occur naturally. At some defense, …

Peers propose GP requirements that would shut terminally ill out of assisted dying – Humanists UK

Peers propose GP requirements that would shut terminally ill out of assisted dying – Humanists UK

New amendments tabled in the House of Lords would require terminally ill people seeking an assisted death to have a series of recent GP appointments, including mandatory home visits, before they could even apply. Humanists UK and My Death, My Decision warn that these proposals would make the Assisted Dying Bill completely inaccessible for many dying patients and urge peers to withdraw them. Peers are due to debate the Bill today. Several amendments propose strict new eligibility hurdles: Amendment 19 (Lord Rook): Must be registered with a GP for 12 months and seen in person at least twice.  Amendment 20 (Baroness O’Loan): Requires four GP appointments in 12 months plus a home visit.  Amendment 21 (Baroness Grey-Thompson): Requires an ‘established relationship’ with a GP with detailed knowledge of the person.  Amendments 28 & 29 (Baroness Finlay): Introduce further requirements for GP home visits. Amendments 30B, 265A, 443A (Baroness Lawlor): Requires the GP to have known the person for at least two years and has seen them six times. Why are these proposals unrealistic and discriminatory: …
