Britons set to punish Starmer’s Labour in local polls

LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE? Starmer said on Wednesday there was a “clear choice” at the ballot box. “Unity or division. Progress versus the politics of anger.” Labour has also fought back, unearthing racist remarks by some Reform candidates and antisemitic comments by certain Green hopefuls. But Starmer is now one of the most unpopular prime ministers ever, and surveys suggest Labour will lose control of the devolved Welsh government in Cardiff for the first time since Wales got its own parliament 27 years ago. A More in Common poll published Tuesday projected Reform is neck-and-neck with the pro-independence Plaid Cymru in Labour’s former heartland. Labour is also fearful of a drubbing in Scotland, where the Scottish National Party is expected to extend its 19-year control of the devolved parliament in Edinburgh. YouGov has predicted Reform could even force Labour into third place there. “The message is clear: if you want real change, you’d better vote for it, and we go into tomorrow feeling pretty optimistic about our prospects,” Farage said. Labour also looks set for big losses …

Zia Yusuf Unveils ‘Abhorrent’ Plans To Punish Areas Which Do Not Vote Reform

British Reform party leader Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf, left, speak during a press conference in a hangar at Oxford Airport in Kidlington, England, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025. via Associated Press Reform UK has been slammed after it revealed a new policy to put migrant detention facilities in constituencies and councils not controlled by its own representatives. Days out from the local elections in England, and devolved elections in Wales and Scotland, Reform’s home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf declared that a Reform government would “deport all illegal migrants in Britain”. While waiting to be deported, the migrants would be housed in detention centres for a “couple of weeks”. Yusuf claimed: “A Reform government will not put any migrant detention facilities in any constituency with a Reform MP. “Nor will we put them where Reform controls the council. “And of the remaining areas, we will prioritise Green controlled parliamentary constituencies and Green controlled councils to locate the detention centres.” Yusuf said this meant if Reform representatives were voted in, they would “guarantee you won’t have a …

Trump wants to punish media for his unpopular war

Donald Trump’s war of choice in Iran is increasingly looking like a political disaster, even as, according to some reports, 80% of Iran’s capacity to strike Israel has been eliminated. Yet the response by multiple officials in recent days suggests an administration in panic. The tell is always in the threat. After Kristi Noem got the unceremonious boot as homeland security secretary earlier this month, the remaining sycophants in the administration are scrambling to stay in the good graces of an increasingly volatile and deeply insecure president. When policies fail and public support craters, authoritarian regimes inevitably seek a scapegoat.  In recent days, the entire apparatus of the federal government has been weaponized against reporters, transforming a political grievance into a chilling, coordinated assault on the First Amendment. For the MAGA movement, blasting the free press is the surest way to Trump’s heart. In recent days, the entire apparatus of the federal government has been weaponized against reporters, transforming a political grievance into a chilling, coordinated assault on the First Amendment.  Over the weekend, Trump …

Voters from both parties largely agree on how to punish acts of political violence

Recent research published in the journal Political Behavior shows that Americans largely prioritize the severity of a violent act over the perpetrator’s political identity when determining punishment. While partisanship does influence how individuals judge political violence, the study suggests that the specific nature of the crime plays a much larger role in public opinion. Political violence has become a prominent concern in the United States following high-profile events such as the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville and the January 6 Capitol attack. Social scientists have debated whether the American public is becoming more tolerant of violence as a means to achieve political goals. Previous scholarship has often focused on whether individuals support violence in the abstract or in relation to specific, highly charged events. The authors of the current study sought to understand how citizens apply standards of accountability when faced with concrete scenarios. They aimed to determine if Americans are willing to punish individuals from their own political group who engage in violence. “We saw a good deal of unresolved scholarly debate on …
