Trader Makes $23 Million In One Day With Massive S&P Call Purchase Hours Before Ceasefire

A trader who made a large bet on a stocks rocketing in the coming weeks is up about $23 million in paper profit today, according to Bloomberg. The unknown trader spent $12 million premium on 6800 lots of 6950 S&P 500 Index Options (SPX) calls for May 8 expiry, when the index was at 6556.21; the trade was executed around 10:20 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, just hours before Trump’s announcement of a 2-week ceasefire which sent stocks soaring.  The trade was an “example of upside chasing on hopes of an imminent peace deal”, said Chris Murphy, co-head of derivatives intelligence, in an email Tuesday.  Following the ceasefire deal last night, stocks surged, with the long SPX 6950 position now trading at $50, Bloomberg pricing data indicates. That makes the position worth $35 million as of noon on April 8, with the S&P 500 at 6773, or a $23 million profit net of the premium paid.  * * * Source link

Jury finds Elon Musk misled investors during Twitter purchase : NPR

Elon Musk attends the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 22. Markus Schreiber/AP hide caption toggle caption Markus Schreiber/AP SAN FRANCISCO — A jury has found Elon Musk liable for misleading investors by deliberately driving down Twitter’s stock price in the tumultuous months leading up to his 2022 acquisition of the social media company for $44 billion. But it absolved him of some fraud allegations, finding that he did not “scheme” to mislead investors. The civil trial in San Francisco centered on a class-action lawsuit filed just before Musk took control of Twitter, which he later renamed X. Jurors were asked to decide if two tweets and comments Musk made on a podcast in May 2022 amounted to him intentionally defrauding Twitter shareholders, who sold their shares based on Musk’s statements. The nine-person jury returned the verdict after nearly four days of deliberation, nearly three weeks after the trial began on March 2. They said that while Musk was liable for misleading investors with two tweets — including one …

Trump says Venezuela will purchase American products with revenue from oil deal

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Venezuela will purchase American products with revenue from its oil sales. “I have just been informed that Venezuela is going to be purchasing ONLY American Made Products, with the money they receive from our new Oil Deal,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social. The president said the purchases will include agricultural products, medicine, medical devices and equipment to improve Venezuela’s grid and energy facilities. Trump said Tuesday that Venezuela would turn over 30 million to 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S. after the overthrow of President Nicolás Maduro. The oil will be sold at market prices, Trump said. The sales, if executed, would total more than $2 billion at oil’s Wednesday closing price. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday that the U.S. will control Venezuela’s oil sales indefinitely. “We’re going to market the crude coming out of Venezuela — first this backed up stored oil and then indefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into …
