Judges body hits journalist with £14k costs bill for pursuing FOI request

Barnie Choudhury Former BBC journalist and British Journalism Award nominee Barnie Choudhury has been hit with charges of £14,270.70 by the appointments body for judges following a dispute over FOI requests. The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), an independent body responsible for selecting candidates for judicial office in England and Wales, said Choudhury “acted unreasonably” in pursuing enforcement action after it failed to comply with a tribunal order to disclose information requested in an FOI. Since 2020, Choudhury has written 23 investigative articles for Eastern Eye in his campaign against judicial secrecy, alleging bullying, misogyny and misconduct in the judicial appointments process. After threatening the JAC with Contempt of Court, Choudhury’s reporting successfully led to the JAC disclosing confidential recruitment materials and exposed the body for its unlawful use of FOI exemptions. His long-running campaign against the JAC led to stories on topics including calls for a senior official for JAC, accused of misleading a court, to be questioned again and claims of bullying within the judiciary. Choudhury was shortlisted for the Public Service Journalism award …

How fusion power works and the startups pursuing it

How fusion power works and the startups pursuing it

For decades, humans have sought to harness the power of the stars to generate electricity here on Earth. And for nearly as long, achieving that goal always seemed just a decade away. Now, a slew of startups are closer than ever before and rushing to build fusion reactors capable of putting power on the grid. Fusion startups have drawn more than $10 billion in investment, with more than a dozen raising over $100 million. Many large funding rounds have closed in the last year, with investors drawn to the industry as energy demand from data centers ramps up and as fusion startups draw closer to the finish line. At its core, fusion power seeks to use the energy released from the fusing of atoms to generate electricity. Humans have known how to fuse atoms for decades, from the hydrogen bomb — an example of uncontrolled nuclear fusion — to any of the myriad fusion devices built in labs around the world. Experimental fusion devices have been able to control nuclear fusion, and one has been …

Inaccurate evidence from AI tool led to police pursuing ban on Israeli football fans, MPs find | UK News

Microsoft’s Copilot AI tool led to more inaccurate evidence being used by West Midlands Police (WMP) to pursue a ban on Israeli football fans, MPs have uncovered. The revelation comes in a Commons select committee report into the controversial decision to exclude Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from a Europa League match at Aston Villa in November that already forced out the chief constable, Craig Guildford. Sky News previously found discrepancies in how the force represented evidence from Amsterdam police about unrest around a Maccabi match at Ajax in 2024. Now, a Home Affairs Select Committee report says: “We have since seen confidential evidence which indicates that some of the key claims presented by West Midlands Police in relation to the Amsterdam disorder originated from a query to Microsoft Copilot AI. “Senior officers later quoted this inaccurate information, including in meetings of the SAG [Safety Advisory Group] and in oral evidence to us, suggesting that proper due diligence was not applied.” You need javascript enabled to view this content Enable javascript to share Share Last month: …

FCC Pursuing Enforcement Proceedings for The View Equal Time

FCC Pursuing Enforcement Proceedings for The View Equal Time

FCC chair Brendan Carr confirmed Wednesday that the commission has started enforcement proceedings that will look into The View‘s alleged violations of political equal time rules. “Disney has a program called The View. And they’ve been asserting the position that The View is what is known as ‘bona fide news’ in the statute,” Carr said during a Wednesday night appearance on FOX News Channel’s The Ingraham Angle. “If you are bona fide news, you don’t have to give candidates equal air time. But, Disney and The View have not established that that program is, in fact, bona fide news. We’ve started enforcement proceedings, taking a look at that. And, again, we’re going to hold broadcasters accountable.” As of late, Carr and the FCC have argued that talk shows, including The View and others, such as Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show, do not qualify for regulatory exemptions that allow said programs to discuss political candidates without having to meet certain requirements. This marks a shift in how talk shows have long qualified for the equal opportunities exemption as …

Carney Cracks: Canada Has ‘No Intention’ Of Pursuing Free Trade Deal With China After Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, after Donald Trump threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports if Ottawa “makes a deal” with Beijing.  Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada at a news conference in Quebec City last Thursday (Mathieu Belanger/Reuters) To review: right before Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney returned from a trip to Beijing and announced a new 5-point ‘strategic partnership’ to ‘diversify our trade partnerships.’ The agreements included slashing tariffs on Chinese EV imports from 100 percent to 6.1 percent for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85 percent to 15 percent until at least the end of the year. Other exports, including Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs, and peas will also not be subject to Chinese anti-discrimination tariffs until at least the end of 2026.  (Denis Balibouse/Reuters) A week later, Carney told the global elite at Davos resort that the “rules-based order” established by the United States and its allies …

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, Prime Minister Mark Carney said, after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap punitive tariffs on Ottawa. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Carney said that the country respects its obligations under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement, known as CUSMA in Canada and the USMCA in the U.S., and will not pursue a free trade agreement without notifying the other two parties. Carney’s remarks come after Trump threatened to put a 100% tariff on Canadian exports if Ottawa “makes a deal” with Beijing. “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump posted on Truth Social Saturday. The remarks come against the backdrop of rising tensions between the U.S. and Canada, with Trump last week withdrawing the invitation to Ottawa to …
