Bondi’s firing won’t quell Trump’s discontent

It feels like 1969 all over again. The United States is mired in a war few want, there is a criminal squatting in the White House and we’re on the verge of going back to the moon. The difference is this time the president is actually a convicted felon who is quickly spinning out of control, and the conflict is being seen as a holy war by those waging it. And as the downward spiral of Donald Trump’s ship of state gains momentum, those working for him have adopted a Titanic approach: It’s everyone for themselves. The president announced on Thursday he had fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, apparently upset with the way she handled the ongoing Epstein scandal and because she didn’t pursue Trump’s political opponents with the vigor he demanded. While reportedly not unexpected, Bondi had hoped to make what the New York Times called a “graceful exit” this summer. She should have known there is no grace with Donald Trump. Her firing capped a week in which the president appeared increasingly out …

Iranian regime rallies supporters in bid to quell unrest

Pro-government demonstrators rally in Tehran, Iran, January 12, 2026. WEST ASIA NEWS AGENCY VIA REUTERS Following days of mass protests and bloody crackdowns, the Islamic Republic of Iran has sought to appear strong. Authorities in Tehran, Hamadan, Ilam, Kerman and several other cities called on supporters to take to the streets to denounce “vandals,” “troublemakers” and “armed terrorists” on Monday, January 12. The orchestrated display came as the country was gripped by its most significant wave of dissent since the Islamic Republic’s founding in 1979, with the death toll from the crackdown continuing to rise. In Tehran, state television broadcast aerial footage of Enghelab Street, in the heart of the city, packed with crowds. From a helicopter flying over the capital, a journalist reported live: “I’m speaking to you from the skies above Tehran. This is the turnout of Tehran’s residents. A symbol of the sacred unity of Iranians.” Among those marching in the pro-government rally were President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei and a number of political figures. …

EU offers extra funds to quell farmer anger over Mercosur trade deal

Farmers opposed to European agriculture reforms and a free-trade deal with South American bloc Mercosur protest in front of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, December 18, 2025. NICOLAS TUCAT / AFP The European Union on Tuesday, January 6, offered a carrot to farmers angered at a trade deal with South American bloc Mercosur, promising to unlock funds for the sector as it seeks to get the accord over the line. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said it plans to tweak its budget proposal for 2028-34, which has come under fire from agricultural groups, to allow farmers early access to around €45 billion. The move comes amid a push to ease the qualms of some countries over the Mercosur deal that Brussels hopes to ink next week. It was welcomed by Italy, which holds the deciding vote on the accord. “This is a positive and significant step forward in the negotiations that will lead to the new EU budget,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. GLP-1 Drugs Help Quell Asthma Among Teens Who Are Overweight or Obese

GLP-1 Drugs Help Quell Asthma Among Teens Who Are Overweight or Obese

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterFRIDAY, Jan. 2, 2026 (HealthDay News) — Severe asthma attacks can be cut in half among teens with excess weight by taking cutting-edge weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Zepbound, a new study says. Half as many teens needed asthma treatment at an emergency room if they were on a GLP-1 drug, researchers reported Dec. 29 in JAMA Network Open. “Our findings suggest a potential dual benefit for this population, where a single class of medication could address both weight management and lower risk for asthma exacerbation, thereby potentially reducing the burden of two common and interconnected chronic conditions,” concluded the research team led by Dr. Lin-Shien Fu, chief of pediatric nephrology and immunology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. For the study, researchers tracked 1,070 kids aged 12 to 18 who were overweight or obese and also had a diagnosis of asthma. Half had been prescribed a GLP-1 drug.  Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs mimic the GLP-1 hormone, which helps control insulin and blood sugar levels, decreases appetite and slows digestion …
