Politics Home Article | Angela Rayner Joins Fightback Against Government Immigration Reforms

Angela Rayner, February 2026 (Alamy) 4 min read2 hr Former Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner has given her backing to the efforts of a large group of Labour MPs currently lobbying the government against its immigration reforms. Addressing a reception held by Labour soft left group Mainstream on Tuesday evening, Rayner said voters had been given the impression that Labour has “represented the establishment, not working people” and that “at worst, we became it”. “The very survival of the Labour Party is at stake,” she warned a packed pub basement in Westminster. “As a party and movement, we cannot hide. We cannot just go through the motions in the face of decline,” Rayner said. “There is no safe ground for us, and we’re running out of time. The change that people so desperately wanted to see needs to be seen. It needs to be felt.” The influential backbencher, widely seen as a potential successor to Keir Starmer, started her speech by telling the crowd: “I have a lot to say. I’ve …

Angela Rayner Criticises Un British Immigration Crackdown

Angela Rayner has launched an outspoken attack on home secretary Shabana Mahmood’s controversial immigration crackdown. The former deputy prime minister said the government was “moving the goalposts” by threatening to deport migrants who have been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK. In her fiercest criticism of the government she used to be a part of, Rayner also warned that Labour is “running out of time” to deliver the change the public voted for at the last general election. She made her comments at an event organised by the soft-left campaign group Mainstream on Tuesday night. On Mahmood’s immigration shake-up, Rayner said: “Many people came here to Britain on the understanding that if they worked in the sectors where we needed them, obeyed the law and paid their taxes, they could stay. “If we suddenly change that, it pulls the rug from under those who have planned their lives and commitments and are contributing to our economy and to our society. “That would be not just bad policy but a breach of trust. The …

Politics Home | Rayner Says Labour’s Gorton And Denton Collapse Must Be “Wake Up Call” For Party

5 min read2 hr Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has said Labour must “really listen” and “reflect” after the party suffered a seismic defeat to the Greens in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Posting on X on Friday morning, Rayner said the defeat in Greater Manchester “must be a wake-up call”. Keir Starmer’s party is today reeling after suffering a collapse in a seat that it had controlled for over 100 years. Labour fell to third place in Gorton and Denton after winning the constituency with over 50 per cent of the vote at the 2024 general election. This time around, the party’s candidate Angeliki Stogia received around 25 per cent of the vote. The victor was the Green candidate Hannah Spencer, who won around 40 per cent of the vote, further demonstrating the threat to Labour’s left flank posed by Zack Polanski’s “eco-populist” party. Reform UK candidate, former academic Matt Goodwin, came second. The scale of the Labour defeat will put renewed pressure on the Prime Minister, and could be a sign of things …

Union boss calls for Angela Rayner to replace Keir Starmer | Politics | News

A union boss has called for Angela Rayner to replace embattled Sir Keir Starmer. Maryam Eslamdoust, the general secretary of the Transport and Salaried Staffs’ Association, insisted it is time for a woman to lead Labour. Her intervention comes as Sir Keir is clinging to power after the worst week of his premiership so far amid the Lord Peter Mandelson scandal. The union leader said Ms Rayner “resonates” with the public and would “stand up” to US President Donald Trump. She told The Telegraph: “I’d like for a woman to lead the Labour Party. “It should be an open contest and there should be a widespread range of candidates. “There should be Left-wingers. But for me, Angela Rayner is a credible figure. We would want to see someone who can stand up to Trump and Keir can’t do that. We think Angela Rayner can. “I think she can show real leadership; she resonates with people. She can speak in a way that resonates with workers, with working-class communities, with women. “But she’s also strong. So …

Angela Rayner drops huge hint at comeback bid – ‘not dead yet!’ | Politics | News

Angela Rayner has hinted at a comeback to frontline politics as she insisted she is “not dead yet”. The former deputy prime minister also reportedly said that Labour’s leadership should “do better”. Ms Rayner, who quit as deputy PM and housing secretary in a row over her tax affairs, made the remarks at a private fundraising dinner last week. Her comments come as Sir Keir Starmer is facing intense speculation over his future ahead of the May elections which are expected to be a bloodbath for Labour. According to the Times, Ms Rayner said Labour “should be humble enough to accept when we’ve made mistakes”. She added: “We should do better, and we should do more.” The former Cabinet minister said she wanted to help Labour fight Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. And in a sign she hopes to return to frontline politics, she added: “And I’m still fighting. I’m not dead yet.” Some 80 MPs are prepared to back Ms Rayner in a leadership contest, should one occur after May’s elections, her allies told the …
