The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that AA Driving School and BSM Driving School illegally omitted a mandatory £3 booking fee from their advertised upfront prices. This practice, known as drip-pricing, meant learner drivers were not shown the full cost initially. Individual refunds will vary based on the number of lesson packages purchased, averaging around £9 per customer, totalling more than £760,000. The combined refunds and penalty will amount to nearly £5 million. This marks the first financial penalty issued by the CMA for a breach of consumer law since it gained new enforcement powers. Apple appears to be quietly updating some apps, based on curious new update notes that have appeared on the App Store. Over the last week, some app updates have included notes that suggest the update is coming from Apple rather than an app developer. “This update from Apple will improve the functionality of this app. No new features are included,” reads the description. Some of the apps that have been updated include Candy Crush Soda Saga, Sentry Mobile, Catan Universe, Bluetti, Mortal Kombat, Duet Display, VLC, and many more. It’s not clear what functionality Apple is improving with each app update, if any. One developer on Reddit said that Apple inserted the text into an app update that had the same version number and content as a prior update. The update text is appearing on apps that have not been updated in some time, as well as apps that received recent updates, so it’s not clear what the apps have in common. The James Beard Foundation Awards — some of the country’s most prestigious accolades in the dining and beverage industries — just announced the 2026 finalists, with nine of them in the Los Angeles area. This year’s awards will also recognize two L.A.-based aid organizations and the recipient of the lifetime achievement award, L.A. chef, restaurateur and cookbook author Nancy Silverton. The James Beard Foundation said in its announcement that “Silverton has mentored countless chefs, bakers and restaurateurs who have since defined their own culinary identities and meaningfully contributed to the independent restaurant ecosystem.” Silverton joins the ranks of past awardees including Ruth Reichl, Wolfgang Puck, Toni Tipton-Martin, Madhur Jaffrey and Martin Yan, among others.
