Pompeii Uses AI to Recreate Man Who Died in Vesuvius Eruption

Pompeii Uses AI to Recreate Man Who Died in Vesuvius Eruption

In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, sending a cloud of ash and hot gas sweeping through the ancient Roman town of Pompei. The writer Pliny the Younger—whose uncle, Pliny the Elder, died in the eruption—watched the catastrophe unfold from a vantage point across the Bay of Naples, later describing how inhabitants had tied pillows over their heads to protect themselves from falling debris and carried torches to find their way through the darkness. In 2024, archeologists discovered the skeletons of two of the volcano’s victims, likely killed as they tried to reach the sea, just outside Pompeii’s southern gates. The first skeleton was of a young man, who is thought to have died in a pyroclastic surge—a rush of superheated gas and hot ash that can literally boil blood. Related Articles In an eerie echo of Pliny the Younger’s account, the second skeleton, that of a somewhat older man, was found with a terracotta bowl near his head. According to researchers, who published their findings on April 27 in the journal Scavi di Pompei, he …

You might have noticed, but when Charli XCX married George Daniel of The 1975 last year, there was a cosmic shift in the wedding world. Vivienne Westwood wedding dresses have had a chokehold on pop culture since Carrie Bradshaw rocked one to be stood up at the altar by Mr Big. But when The Brat singer paraded her own mini version through the streets of Hackney, she became instant wedding inspo for an entire generation of women. Star-studded photos from the duo’s weddings dominate every Millennial bride-to-be’s Pinterest board (with the exception of one Actually Romantic singer). Plan To Recreate Val Kilmer With Generative AI In New Film Sparks Backlash

Plan To Recreate Val Kilmer With Generative AI In New Film Sparks Backlash

A new film featuring an AI-generated likeness of Val Kilmer as its lead “actor” is already facing a wave of backlash. The Batman star died in April 2025 at the age of 65, 10 years after first being diagnosed with throat cancer. Prior to his death, Kilmer had been set to star in the drama As Deep As The Grave, directed by Coerte Voorhees, as a Native American spiritualist and Catholic priest, Father Fintan. It’s now been confirmed that Voorhees will move forward with the project with an AI likeness of Kilmer used to portray Father Fintan, with the approval of the actor’s estate and his daughter, Mercedes. FIRST LOOK: Val Kilmer has been resurrected via AI to star in the new movie “As Deep as the Grave.” Kilmer was cast in the movie in 2020, five years before his death. But he was too sick amid his throat cancer battle to ever make it to set. Now an AI version of the actor is… pic.twitter.com/OjWHUdrsXn — Variety (@Variety) March 18, 2026 The filmmaker told …

What Did the Instruments in Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights Sound Like? Oxford Scholars Recreate Them

What Did the Instruments in Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights Sound Like? Oxford Scholars Recreate Them

Welcome to The Garden of Earthly Delights. You’ll find no angelic strings here. Those are reserved for first-class citizens whose virtuous lives earned them passage to the uppermost heights. Down below, stringed instruments produce the most hellish sort of cacophony, a fitting accompaniment for the horn whose bell is befouled with the arm of a tortured soul. How do we know that’s what they sounded like? A group of musicologists, craftspeople and academics from the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments at the University of Oxford, took it upon themselves to actually build the instruments depicted in Hieronymus Bosch’s action-packed triptych—the hell harp, the violated lute, the grossly oversized hurdy-gurdy… …And then they played them. Let us hope they stopped shy of shoving flutes up their bums. (Such a placement might produce a sound, but not from the flute’s golden throat). The Bosch experiment added ten more instruments to the museum’s already impressive, over 1000-strong collection of woodwinds, percussion, and brass, many from the studios of esteemed makers, some dating all the way back to the …

Politics Home | Copyright Thwarts Plan To Recreate Love Actually Moment In Prime Minister’s TikTok

Hugh Grant in Love Actually (2003) | Alamy 2 min read11 December A plan for Keir Starmer to pay tribute to a scene from the Christmas film Love Actually in his first TikTok video was scrapped over copyright concerns. The Prime Minister joined the social media platform this week, as part of the government’s effort to modernise its communications and reach more voters, particularly young people. The government has also joined Reddit, PoliticsHome revealed earlier this year, and is teaming up with influencers in a bid to promote its work.  In his first post on TikTok earlier this week, Starmer was filmed walking through 10 Downing Street with his wife, Victoria Starmer, to a Christmas light switch-on outside, inviting viewers to “follow me”. PoliticsHome understands that aides had initially hoped to soundtrack the clip with Jump by The Pointer Sisters – the song that accompanies Hugh Grant’s famous dance in 10 Downing Street in the 2003 film. However, they decided against it out of concern that it could breach copyright rules. Instead, the video uses Santa’s Coming Home (For …
