Why Carl Webster’s Coronation Street redemption wouldn’t be easy

Coronation Street has spent months positioning Carl Webster as one of Weatherfield’s most destructive forces. Now, with murder week chaos intensifying, the question may no longer simply be whether Carl can change, but whether his redemption is even possible. This Tuesday’s trip (28 April) to the cobbles deepened that uncertainty. Carl, played by Jonathan Howard, appeared to be tying up loose ends ahead of a possible exit from Weatherfield, but his plans quickly spiralled after Ronnie bundled him into the back of his car and drove him off to an unknown destination. The sinister twist came after Carl’s latest string of betrayals pushed tensions to breaking point, leaving him with enemies around every corner and firmly placing him on the list of characters who could be at the centre of Corrie’s murder mystery. Introduced as a man already burdened by debts in Germany, his first instinct was survival through exploitation, constantly looking for new ways to fleece …

A Feminist Tale of Vengeance and Redemption

A Feminist Tale of Vengeance and Redemption

I love a good science fiction read, especially when it involves feminism and vengeance. I discovered my love for feminist vengeance stories after watching Lady Vengeance, the final installment of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, which includes the unforgettable film Old Boy. If you also love these stories and have a fondness for mechanical behemoths (so specific), have I got a book for you. My recommendation is also ideal for fans of mythology and non-Western histories, if you’re looking for a broader touchpoint. This YA science fiction novel has everything: action, romance, Chinese historical elements, aliens, futuristic tech… Best of all, it has an energizing hero. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao In Iron Widow, the relationships are complicated, the stakes are high, and our main character, Zetian, is ready to raze it all to the ground. Set in a futuristic world ruled by the elders and the gods, a world where women are oppressed and barred from intellectual pursuits, taught to be obedient and to live and die for their fathers, brothers, and all men, …

Dogs and People: Stories of Redemption and Mutual Rescue

Dogs and People: Stories of Redemption and Mutual Rescue

Very often, when I listen to the stories people tell about their dog and others’ dogs, I all too often feel they are also talking about themselves and other humans. I have no proof of this possible relationship, so I was especially pleased to learn of Dr. Katharine Mershon’s new book, Dogs Save: Stories of Canine Redemption in US Culture. In her highly acclaimed book, Mershon critically examines stories of mutual rescue by analyzing “seemingly heartwarming stories of mutual rescue [that] revolve around redemption through suffering.” Ultimately, she melds religious studies and animal studies and shows that redemption narratives―what she calls “canine redemption narratives”―shape who survives and thrives. Here’s what she told me about her seminal work on human-dog relationships, rethinking rescue and who’s rescuing whom—what some call mutual rescue. Marc Bekoff: Why did you write Dogs Save? Katharine Mershon: The idea for Dogs Save came to me from my experiences working with dogs and the people who love them. For many years, I was a volunteer at a large city shelter, where I spent …

If so, good news: the ISU Figure Skating World Championships are now underway. This year’s competition, held in Prague, began on Wednesday and ends on Saturday. Much like the Olympics, it features two days of competition in each of the four disciplines: women’s, men’s, pairs and ice dance. It’s the last major event of the 2025-2026 figure skating season, offering athletes one more shot at a title and, in some cases, post-Olympics redemption. Many Olympians, including American gold medalist Alysa Liu, and reigning ice dance world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates, withdrew from worlds after medaling in Milan, which is not unusual. But other fan-favorites, like Amber Glenn and Ilia Malinin, are aiming to make this podium after missing out in Italy. Competition kicked off with the women’s …

Gemma Collins teases “redemption” arc as she returns to the I’m a Celebrity jungle

Gemma Collins is returning to the I’m a Celebrity jungle and this time, she’s on a mission of redemption. The TOWIE legend first appeared on the ITV programme in 2014 and was arguably the most entertaining person to watch, but she quickly threw the towel in and became the first contestant to leave her season. Collins had been vocal about her discomfort at jungle life, saying at the time: “I’ve got to go. Three days. I’ve just got to get out of here. You have to get me out of here. It’s making me feel panicked and stressed. It’s not normal.” She then continued: “I’ve got to get out of here. I cannot go another f***ing day in here. It’s not on. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I will never ever do a show like this ever. It’s put me off TV for life. “I’m telling you now. It’s winding me up now. This is bull***t, man. I can’t handle it. Just get me out of here. I certainly won’t be coming back for more. That’s for …

Freestyle skiing-Australia’s Anthony earns redemption with dual moguls gold

LIVIGNO, Italy, Feb 14 : Australia’s Jakara Anthony won the gold medal in the women’s freestyle skiing dual moguls at the Winter Olympics on Saturday, redeeming herself after a disappointing loss three days earlier in the single-format moguls.  Anthony, 27, became the first Australian to earn two Winter Olympics gold medals when she overtook American Jaelin Kauf under heavy snow in the northern Italian town of Livigno. Kauf earned silver, and bronze went to fellow American Elizabeth Lemley. “This one is really different to the last one because I picked this up after the heartbreak of the other day,” Anthony said of her new medal. Dual moguls is a new sport at the Olympics, pitting skiers together in a head-to-head elimination format in which two competitors race side-by-side through parallel bump fields. Speed counts, but so do turns and aerial manoeuvres.  Anthony crossed the finish line a fraction of a second before Kauf but had to wait for the judges’ final assessment. She smiled and pumped her arms in the air when she saw she …

Economic Democracy as the Redemption of Political Democracy

Economic Democracy as the Redemption of Political Democracy

Economic democracy is most often defended by pointing to the so-called “firm-state analogy.” Hannes Kuch’s recent plea for economic democracy in an earlier post in this series is no exception, arguing that “if being subjected to state government requires democracy, so does being subjected to corporate government. This is the consequence from the analogy between the firm and the state.” This argument presents economic democracy as a project of extension. It takes the existence of political democracy (and the arguments justifying it) for granted and argues democracy should be extended to the economic sphere. Practically, this can be done by granting voting rights to workers and possibly other stakeholder groups (such as suppliers, consumers, or local communities) within the management of firms. Debates about political democracy on the other hand—both in academia and in the public arena—rarely even refer to the economic sphere. Many political theorists lament the thin, representative nature of democracy in modern liberal democracies and argue in favor of more deliberative, participative, and/or direct forms of democracy. Democratic innovations such as citizens’ …
