US to Set up 12 Regional Disaster Response Hubs as It Consolidates Emergency Humanitarian Aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is setting up 12 regional hubs to coordinate disaster and emergency humanitarian responses under the auspices of a new bureau that will oversee some of the functions that had been handled by the now-dismantled U.S. Agency for International Development. The new Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response will be based in Washington with about 200 staffers, the department said Friday, but on-the-ground operations are to be run from the regional hubs, which will be located in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa. The Trump administration has been criticized by many aid and relief organizations for closing down USAID, which had been the government’s main platform for providing foreign assistance for decades. The new bureau, which will handle only disaster and emergency aid, is part of a larger office that oversees all foreign assistance. The administration has drastically cut foreign aid spending, particularly for programs that dealt with climate change and social justice issues, but late last year announced a $2 billion contribution to the U.N. Office for the Coordination …

Prabowo slams ‘inefficient’ spending by regional officials, including governor’s US0,000 official car

Prabowo slams ‘inefficient’ spending by regional officials, including governor’s US$500,000 official car

In contrast to Rudy’s car, Prabowo stressed that he uses a domestically-made vehicle, valued at a much lower price. “I am the president of Indonesia. I use a Maung car made in Indonesia. It costs 700 million (rupiah). Maybe because it’s for the president, it has bulletproof features, and might be 1 billion rupiah. But it’s nowhere near 8 billion rupiah,” he said. Prabowo added that use of the public funds for officials’ luxury purchases undermines efficiency principles promoted by the central government, pointing to more urgent expenditures, such as constructing village bridges, that have not been met. “Many expenditures that should be carried out by regencies and provinces are not being implemented. Take bridges, for example – village bridges. People have to protest, and the president has to step in,” Prabowo said. “But fine, I will take responsibility. So we must be transparent, we must be fair.” The East Kalimantan administration purchased the Range Rover 3.0 Autobiography LWB in November 2025. It costs seven times more than Prabowo’s official presidential vehicle and featured off-road capabilities and a terrain response …

Sánchez’s Socialists projected to suffer new defeat in regional elections in Castilla y León – POLITICO

The People’s Party, which governs in Castilla y León, is projected to remain the largest party in the region with between 30 and 32 lawmakers. The conservatives will fall short of securing a governing majority, however, and are expected to attempt to form a coalition with the far-right Vox. For the first time, the ultranationalist group is projected to have secured over 20 percent of the vote and looks set to jump from 13 lawmakers to controlling between 17 and 19 seats in the parliament. Castilla y León’s regional president, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, in 2022 became the first PP leader to form a coalition government with Vox. The partnership lasted just two years, with the far-right group breaking with the conservatives over migration policies. In the lead-up to Sunday’s election, Vox refused to cast itself as a junior partner to Mañueco’s PP, instead campaigning as a party that can truly represent Spain’s conservative voters. In Extremadura and Aragón, where the the center-right similarly won recent regional elections but fell short of a governing majority, negotiations …

Caribbean Islands Seek $200 Million for Regional Biodiversity Push

LONDON, March 12 (Reuters) – A group of Caribbean countries plan to raise $200 million for a joint bid to boost biodiversity, in a push for more influence on internationally financed environment projects to maximise their impact, Grenada’s climate ambassador has told Reuters. The 30X30 initiative by the ‌Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and ‌its 12 members is part of a broader global drive towards targets, agreed in 2022, that include protecting 30% of the world’s land and sea by 2030. The hope is that such cross-border initiatives, with government oversight from the start, will be more effective as they harness the power of multilateral, bilateral, philanthropic and private sector funding along with financial tools such as debt-for-nature swaps, Safiya Sawney said. CARIBBEAN ISLANDS SEEK TO MAKE ENVIRONMENT FINANCE PAY While around $650 million was raised to fund conservation in member states over the 20 years to 2024, governments often had to consider the priorities of multilateral donors before their own. For lack of coordination, some donors duplicated efforts. “From the outside looking in, …

Trump looks to turn attention to Western Hemisphere, at least for a moment, at a regional summit

Trump looks to turn attention to Western Hemisphere, at least for a moment, at a regional summit

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media after arriving in Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S., Feb. 27, 2026. Elizabeth Frantz | Reuters President Donald Trump is set to gather with Latin American leaders on Saturday at his Miami-area golf club as his administration looks to demonstrate that it’s still committed to sharpening the U.S. foreign policy focus on the Western Hemisphere, even as it deals with five-alarm crises around the globe. The gathering, which the White House is calling the “Shield of the Americas” summit, comes just two months after Trump ordered an audacious U.S. military operation to capture Venezuela’s then-president, Nicolás Maduro, and whisk him and his wife to the United States to face drug conspiracy charges. Looming even larger is Trump’s decision to join with Israel to launch a war on Iran one week ago, a conflict that has left hundreds dead, convulsed global markets and unsettled the broader Middle East. He started Saturday with a social media post warning that more Iranian officials would become targets in the war and that strikes …
