The Last of Us and Baby Reindeer actors star in new indie movie trailer

A trailer has been unveiled for new coming-of-age drama Sunny Dancer, which stars the likes of Bella Ramsey and Jessica Gunning. The film, which has been written and directed by George Jaques (Black God), centres on Ivy (Ramsey) who, having just conquered cancer, is signed up to spend the summer at what she begrudgingly calls “chemo camp” by her parents (played by Gunning and James Norton). The new trailer gives fans a first look at her journey, as she goes from being forced to go to the camp against her will and resenting the experience, to making connections with her fellow campmates and having a summer she will never forget. Unpleasant. Prurient. These three words, based on the opening episode alone, could be applied to Half Man, Richard Gadd’s much-hyped follow-up to Baby Reindeer, his semi-autobiographical stalker drama on Netflix. By the end of this six-part BBC/HBO drama, two more stand out: trauma porn. Never before have I seen a TV show this smugly grim – such a relentless exercise in self-punishment that even watching it feels like an act of nihilism. Spanning four decades, it’s the story of two siblings bound together by circumstance, violence and the secrets each keeps from the other. Take a scene in episode two. Hoving in with a horrific sense of foreboding, the air thick with menace, it left me gasping. Two brothers from another mother, the volatile Ruben (Stuart Campbell) and the timid Niall (Mitchell Robertson), are at the latter’s student flat. Alby …

Richard Gadd on ‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Half Man’ and Fame

Richard Gadd on ‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Half Man’ and Fame

Richard Gadd hadn’t quite made peace with his newfound celebrity status when, at his local supermarket, he came face-to-face with a front-page headline in the Daily Record: “Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd is ‘struggling to cope with fame’ as fans ‘camp in his garden.‘ “I just looked at it and I was like, ‘I’m on the cover?’ What the fuck?” recalls the 36-year-old, reliving the moment. “Who said that and where have they got that from?” he wondered. He’s still in disbelief. “People were trying to hack my social media, trying to hack my emails. I really felt like, for a period in time, the whole world was talking about me.” Maybe not the whole world. But for a few months in the spring of 2024, as Baby Reindeer smashed records and taboos, it certainly felt that way — to us, too. Photographed by Frank Ockenfels 3 Gadd and I are midway through our evening together on an uncharacteristically hot, sticky evening at London’s Charlotte Street Hotel, where the Scotsman is nursing the particular anxiety of a …

FACT: Caribou moms evolved to store energy in their antlers—and snack on those delicious bones  By Rachel Feltman First things first: caribou and reindeer are the same thing. They’re also the only deer species where females grow antlers. This is very strange, not just because antlers are generally a male trait, but because antlers are a huge pain in the butt.  Unlike horns, which are almost always permanent and are made of bone covered in keratin, antlers are …

Richard Gadd reveals new BBC show Half Man pre-dates Baby Reindeer

Richard Gadd reveals new BBC show Half Man pre-dates Baby Reindeer

Following his acclaimed first series Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd is back with a new drama, Half Man, this time airing on the BBC. A co-production with HBO, the series stars Gadd alongside Jamie Bell, and follows Niall and Ruben, two men who are brought together in youth and become like brothers. When Ruben turns up at Niall’s wedding 30 years later, an explosion of violence takes place, catapulting us back through their lives, from the eighties to the present day. The series explores brotherhood, violence and the intense fragility of male relationships. Speaking at a Q&A for the series, Gadd recently revealed that he had the idea for Half Man “a long time ago”, and in fact wrote the first episode before Baby Reindeer. “It kind of sat there, then Baby Reindeer was commissioned, and I went off to do that, and I was hoping it would be there at the end of it,” he said. “But the genesis of it happened quite a number of years ago.” Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell in Half …

Heavy metals drop, but levels of PFAS in Svalbard reindeer skyrocket

Heavy metals drop, but levels of PFAS in Svalbard reindeer skyrocket

Toxic metals in reindeer populations have dropped over the last decade, but the levels of forever chemicals has risen dramatically, posing concerns about the species that consume the reindeer, which includes polar bears and humans. The Svalbard reindeer are a subspecies of reindeer(or caribou) found only on the island, where they have existed for at least 5,000 years. They are about the third of the size of typical reindeer species and after facing extinction in the early 20th Century, have bounced back to a population of roughly 22,000. The presence of heavy metals and other pollutants have been known to accrue in the Arctic, especially in species at the top of the food chain, such as the polar bear. But the Svalbard reindeer represent the only major grazing animal in the European Arctic, feeding on tundra vegetation and themselves feeding local predator populations- as well as being hunted for their meat by humans- and questions remain about how many organic pollutants are present in their meat and fur. Peaky Blinders lead stars in trailer for Baby Reindeer creator’s drama

Ahead of its release on BBC One and iPlayer later this month, a first-look trailer has been unveiled for Half Man, Richard Gadd’s highly anticipated new drama. The series, Gadd’s first to release after the monster success of Baby Reindeer, stars Gadd alongside Jamie Bell, who was recently announced as the lead for the upcoming Peaky Blinders sequel series. The trailer introduces us to Bell’s Niall and Gadd’s Ruben, two boys who are brought into each other’s lives through death and circumstance and become brothers, despite their differences. As seen in the trailer, Ruben is violent and unpredictable, while Niall is meek and mild-mannered. While we see Ruben and Niall earlier on in their lives, played by Stuart Campbell and Mitchell Robertson respectively, we also see them at Niall’s wedding, where Ruben turns up unexpectedly, and we’re told by the show’s synopsis that an “explosion of violence takes place”. With emotions running high throughout the trailer and plenty of violence already on display, it looks set to be quite the rollercoaster of a series. You …
