Transgender service members are being forced to retire from the military under the Trump administration’s second ban. Jackie Lay/NPR hide caption toggle caption Jackie Lay/NPR As 71-year-old retired four star Gen. Stanley McChrystal approaches the podium, the room applauds. “I can’t believe he’s here,” someone whispers. Almost as if he heard them, McChrystal says this into the microphone. “First off, we shouldn’t be here.” “Here” is a retirement ceremony for five transgender service members who have been forcibly separated from the military under the Trump administration’s second ban. The ceremony, which normally would be given by the Pentagon, has been hosted by the Human Rights Campaign in Washington, D.C. To the left of the stage is a table of mannequins dressed in the retirees’ uniforms. The service members are prohibited from wearing them for the ceremony. “When these professionals finally decide to retire,” says McChrystal. “It should happen on parade fields, in offices, on the deck of ships … wherever the Space Force goes, I don’t know.” The audience laughs, grateful for the playful jab …

Laser Hair Removal for Men 101, According to a Dermatologist

Laser Hair Removal for Men 101, According to a Dermatologist

Before diving into laser hair removal for men, we should make our official stance clear: We think body hair is great. Chest hair? Excellent. A rugged beard? Sign us up. But for many folks out there, there are certain areas where hair feels less charming and more like a nuisance. If you’ve ever looked at your back, shoulders, or neck and thought, Yeah, this could go, you’re not alone. More men than ever are turning to laser hair removal to tame the overgrowth, ditch their razors, and enjoy their newfound freedom. “The most common areas men treat are the back, chest and shoulders. Some also add in the abdomen,” says Julia Carroll, Toronto-based board-certified dermatologist. “We also often perform laser hair removal on the neck to tidy up the hairline. Some men also opt to treat the beard area if they are prone to ingrown hairs.” To be clear: Nobody needs laser hair removal. If you love your body hair exactly as it is, carry on. But if you’re over waxing appointments, tired of constant …

Why PFAS removal is so challenging

Why PFAS removal is so challenging

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, have earned an unfortunate nickname: ‘forever chemicals.” It sounds dramatic, but from a chemistry and engineering perspective, it is not far from the truth. PFAS resist heat, water, oil, sunlight, and biological degradation. Those properties made them commercially valuable for decades. They are also the reason removing PFAS from water, soil, and waste streams is so difficult. Communities worldwide are now grappling with contamination in drinking water supplies, firefighting training sites, industrial facilities, and landfills. As regulators tighten allowable limits, utilities and engineers face a complex reality: PFAS are unlike other contaminants. The same tools that work for metals, pathogens, or hydrocarbons often fall short here. To understand why PFAS removal is so challenging, you have to start with the chemistry. The bond that won’t break PFAS are defined by chains of carbon atoms bonded to fluorine. The carbon–fluorine bond is one of the strongest in organic chemistry. It is short, highly stable, and extremely resistant to thermal, chemical, and biological attack. In most organic molecules, carbon–hydrogen …

Timothy A.clary | AFP | Getty Images The Trump administration was sued Tuesday over the abrupt removal of the Pride rainbow flag last week from the Stonewall National Monument in New York City, at the site of the 1969 uprising that ignited the gay rights movement in the United States. The lawsuit, filed by a group of LGBTQ+ advocates and a Greenwich Village community group, said the federal government claimed that Department of the Interior rules bar the flying of anything but the U.S. flags, DOI flags, and the POW/MIA flags in national parks. “In fact, the opposite is true: The policies the government says require removing the Pride flag expressly permit the [National Park Service] to fly other flags that provide historical context to national monuments — which is precisely what the NPS …

British Museum Explains Removal of ‘Palestinian’ from Some Wall Texts

British Museum Explains Removal of ‘Palestinian’ from Some Wall Texts

The British Museum contested a Telegraph report from this weekend, saying that it had not entirely stripped the word “Palestinian” from its wall texts in response to pressure from a pro-Israel group. The Telegraph report stated that UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) had written to British Museum director Nicholas Cullinan, claiming that using the word Palestine in its displays of Middle Eastern art “erases historical changes and creates a false impression of continuity. Moreover, the group said, doing so risks “re-framing the origins of the Israelites and Jewish people as erroneously stemming from Palestine.” Related Articles While it remains unclear which wall texts changed, the Telegraph reported that “‘Palestinian descent’ has been changed to read ‘Canaanite descent’” in a display about the Hyksos, a Levantine people. Asked about the changes on Sunday, a British Museum spokesperson said in a statement that “the term ‘Canaan’ is relevant for the southern Levant in the later second millennium BC” while also maintaining that the institution continues to utilize the UN’s terminology, using “‘Palestinian’ as a cultural or ethnographic …

Wildfire debris removal underway at Palisades Bowl Mobile Home park

Wildfire debris removal underway at Palisades Bowl Mobile Home park

Crews finally are removing fire debris from the Palisades Bowl Mobile Home Estates, a roughly 170-unit, rent-controlled mobile home park along Pacific Coast Highway. Cleanup of the property — the largest site in Pacific Palisades still filled with fire debris — is starting more than a year after wildfire destroyed the park, and more than four months after the city of Los Angeles declared the site a public nuisance. The sights of excavators and hazmat suits this week prompted a sigh of relief from Palisadians worried about the health risks of the potentially toxic debris. But for residents of the Bowl, it’s hardly a step toward returning home. Share via Close extra sharing options “The owner, still, is not communicating with us … and the only reason they’re doing this is because the city eventually threatened them,” said Jon Brown, who lived in the Palisades Bowl for 10 years and now helps lead the fight for residents to return home. “But once they get it cleaned up, they’re able to just sit on their hands …

Probiotic supplement supports body’s natural PFAS removal

Probiotic supplement supports body’s natural PFAS removal

Cambiotics has successfully closed a Seed investment round of $4.76m to initiate clinical trials and prepare for the launch of its first product — a probiotic supplement designed to support the body’s natural removal of PFAS. The initial funding will enable the company to launch the probiotic supplement later this year. The supplement, known as 46&, will initially be targeted towards groups with elevated exposure risk, particularly firefighters, who face heightened PFAS levels due to the chemicals’ presence in firefighting foam and fire-resistant gear. Collaborative Fund investor Matt Kaufman commented: “Cambiotics is one of the first companies building a real path to removing PFAS from the body, and we couldn’t be more excited to be backing them.” The growing dangers of forever chemicals Forever chemicals show up in everything from nonstick cookware to the drinking water of more than 172 million people across the US. They earned the “forever chemicals” nickname because they do not break down easily in the environment or in the human body. According to the EPA, PFAS are found in water, …

Reformers Protest Removal of Artworks from UK Court Facilities

Cultural organizations and reformers in the UK are up in arms against government contractor Serco for removing artworks from court facilities in England and Wales.  A February 10 report from Lay Observers, an independent monitor, found that Prisoner Escort and Custody Service, a government agency, provided artworks to all courts. Lay Observers found that only courts operated by prisoner transport company GEOAmey put the work on display. Some facilities operated by government contractor Serco, says the report, “initially put up the artwork but quickly removed it following instructions from Serco management. No satisfactory explanation has been given as to why one supplier permits this while another does not.” Related Articles The works were created by inmates at Doncaster prison, says the report. Their charge was to brighten the environment and reflect on their own experiences in court. The pieces were commissioned by the government’s Prisoner Escort and Custody Services to adorn court custody suites, which are secure facilities connected to courthouses where people await their appearances before a judge or magistrate, many of which are …
