Can nuclear power resolve the energy crisis? – People & Profit

The war with Iran has prompted many economies to reevaluate their energy needs and strategy. In Europe, several countries are considering reviving the use of nuclear power. Sweden, Belgium, and Italy are among those rolling back previous restrictions, while France and the UK are spearheading new nuclear projects. Valérie Faudon, executive director of the French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN) says the industry has to overcome sometimes negative public perceptions by proving that nuclear energy is safe. “It’s one of the safest means of producing energy, in the same way that airplanes are one of the safest means of transportation. So the way the industry has addressed this is first by major transparency of events, and also very strong controls over the industry.” She says nuclear power can address two of Europe’s biggest concerns when it comes to energy – sustainability and independence. “It’s a low carbon source,” she explains. “It doesn’t produce any greenhouse gases during production, fission doesn’t produce CO2.”  European countries also have the technology and manpower to be self-sufficient as they expand their …

EU says WhatsApp AI terms update fails to resolve antitrust concerns – POLITICO

“Replacing the legal ban with pricing that has a similar effect does not change our preliminary view that Meta’s conduct appears to be an abuse of its dominant position,” Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera said in a statement. The EU executive is considering whether to impose rare interim measures on Meta to restore access. The updated charge sheet follows Meta’s March announcement that it had replaced the ban with a new pricing framework. The tech giant said at the time that the change in Europe is intended to provide the Commission with “the time it needs to conclude its investigation.” Meta maintains that the AI sector is “highly competitive,” and that rival AI services remain available to customers through app stores, search engines, email providers and operating systems. “The European Commission is proposing to use its regulatory powers to enable some of the largest companies in the world to use the paid-for WhatsApp Business product for free,” Joshua Breckman, a spokesperson for Meta, said in response to the Commission’s chargesheet. Breckman added that interim measures would …

Ukraine says talks to resolve war will continue in US on Sunday

Ukrainian and US negotiators trying to move towards a settlement of the four-year war pitting Kyiv against Moscow opened their latest round of talks in Florida on Saturday (Mar 21), with more discussions planned through the weekend. Russian representatives were not present at the meeting. “We continued discussing key issues and the next steps within the negotiation track,” chief Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov wrote on social media platform X. “Particular attention was paid to aligning approaches for further progress toward practical results.” Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met at two sets of US-brokered talks in the United Arab Emirates this year and a round in Geneva last month. Moscow and Kyiv agreed on prisoner exchanges, but no breakthroughs were achieved. The White House described the latest meeting as “constructive”, with discussions “focused on narrowing and resolving remaining items to move closer to a comprehensive peace agreement”. Umerov, a senior Ukrainian security official, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there would be further talks on Sunday. The US negotiating team is led by special envoy Steve Witkoff …

Gymnast Yul Moldauer’s 16-Month Suspension Tested His Resolve and Reinforced His Love for the Sport

Gymnast Yul Moldauer’s 16-Month Suspension Tested His Resolve and Reinforced His Love for the Sport

That didn’t make looking at his mentions on social media any easier for a gymnast who has a national title, two world championship medals and an Olympic appearance on his resume. “I’ve read everything online, ‘Maybe Yul was doing drugs,’” Moldauer said. “I have more than 10 years of being clean. It sucks. But at the end of the day, it’s my responsibility.” While Moldauer points out all three of the tests he missed came during the competition season — when schedules can get hectic — and that he successfully passed spot tests in between the misses, he also knows that it doesn’t matter. He knew the rules and he got sloppy. “It’s just embarrassing,” he said. And now, it’s over. Moldauer will return to international competition for the first time in two years on Saturday when he competes as part of Team USA at the reimagined American Cup in Henderson, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. The event — which will use the mixed team format that will likely make its Olympic debut at the …

Singapore PM Wong, Malaysia’s Anwar pledge to strengthen ties, resolve outstanding issues after ‘buka puasa’

KUALA LUMPUR/SINGAPORE: Prime Ministers Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia and Lawrence Wong of Singapore on Friday (Feb 20) pledged to strengthen the friendship between the two countries even as they seek to enhance cooperation on resolving longstanding bilateral issues. In a Facebook post, Mr Anwar said that he had hosted Mr Wong at the historic Seri Negara estate in conjunction with his Singaporean counterpart’s “special visit” to Kuala Lumpur. The Seri Negara estate was the official guesthouse for British administrators and is now owned by the Malaysian government. Prior to their one-on-one meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, the two leaders had toured the estate. “We then broke our fast together before continuing with a one-on-one meeting over dinner, where we discussed efforts to strengthen Malaysia–Singapore friendship and enhance cooperation in resolving outstanding issues involving both friendly nations,” Mr Anwar said. He added: “I deeply appreciate PM Lawrence’s visit, which reflects the friendship between our two countries, while also strengthening our personal ties.” Source link

PacifiCorp to Pay 5M to Resolve Federal Government’s Claims Over Wildfires in Oregon, California

PacifiCorp to Pay $575M to Resolve Federal Government’s Claims Over Wildfires in Oregon, California

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — PacifiCorp has agreed to pay $575 million to resolve the federal government’s claims for damages stemming from six wildfires in Oregon and California in 2020 and 2022, federal officials announced Friday, in the utility’s latest multimillion-dollar payout related to the deadly blazes. The settlement resolves the federal government’s claims that PacifiCorp’s electrical lines negligently started four fires in Oregon in 2020 and two fires in California in 2020 and 2022, the Justice Department said. The money will help restore some of the 290,000 acres (117,359 hectares) of public land that burned. It will also help repay the government for the cost of fighting the fires, which the department said was “critical because the U.S. Forest Service now spends more than half of its budget on wildfire suppression annually.” “This settlement served the Department’s longstanding policy of holding individuals and corporations responsible for damages caused by wildfires. Every fire impacting federal lands, no matter the size, is a priority,” U.S. Attorney Eric Grant of the Eastern District of California said in a …

White House meeting fails to resolve US crypto legislation stalemate

White House meeting fails to resolve US crypto legislation stalemate

Feb 3 : A White House meeting aimed at breaking a months‑long stalemate between major U.S. banks and cryptocurrency firms ended Monday without any agreement, underscoring industry divisions that continue to threaten progress on landmark digital‑asset legislation. The closed‑door session, convened by the White House’s crypto council, brought together representatives from the crypto industry and the banking industry in an effort to reach an agreement on stalled crypto market structure legislation. Both sides emerged from the meeting describing it as constructive, but fundamental disagreements that upended the bill’s progress remained unresolved. Representatives from trade groups for the banking and crypto industries were in attendance, including the American Bankers Association, the Independent Community Bankers of America, the Blockchain Association and The Digital Chamber.  Crypto market structure legislation has been held up by a clash between the two industries over how the bill treats interest and other rewards paid on stablecoins, a sticking point that has pitted the two sides against each other for months. Banks have been pushing for language in the bill prohibiting the practice. …

Trade war ‘not the right way to resolve our differences’, says Sir Keir Starmer | Politics News

Trade war ‘not the right way to resolve our differences’, says Sir Keir Starmer | Politics News

A trade war is “not the right way to resolve differences” within an alliance, Sir Keir Starmer has said.  At a Downing Street press conference to address the Greenland crisis, the prime minister appeared to rule out slapping the US with retaliatory tariffs. Politics live: What does the UK do next on Greenland? It comes after Donald Trump threatened the UK and other European nations with a 10% tariff on all goods from February, increasing to 25% from June, until a deal is reached for Washington to purchase the self-autonomous Danish island. Sir Keir said using tariffs against allies is “completely wrong” and “not the right way to resolve differences”. However, asked by Sky News’ political editor Beth Rigby if he is planning retaliatory tariffs, Sir Keir said: “A tariff war isn’t in anybody’s interests and therefore what I want to do is to avoid a tariff war because it will be businesses, workers and families across the country that will be hit by a trade war.” He said he will engage with European allies …
