Emergency First Responders Say Waymos Are Getting Worse

Emergency First Responders Say Waymos Are Getting Worse

Emergency first responder leaders told federal regulators in a private meeting last month that they were frustrated with the performance of autonomous vehicles on their streets—that city firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and paramedics are forced to spend time during emergencies resolving issues with frozen or stuck cars. One fire official called them “a safety issue for our crews as well as the victims.” WIRED obtained an audio recording of the meeting. Officials from San Francisco and Austin, where Waymo has been ferrying passengers without drivers for more than a year, said the vehicles’ performance is getting worse. “We are actually seeing something interesting: backsliding of some things that had improved upon,” Mary Ellen Carroll, the executive director of San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management, told officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which oversees self-driving vehicle safety in the US. “They are committing more traffic violations.” “We’ve seen some behavior we haven’t seen in a few years. … Waymo is frequently now blocking our fire stations from access,” added Chief Patrick Rabbitt, the …

Emergency Responders Say They’re Now Unpaid “Roadside Assistance” for Confused Waymos

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Overseas teleoperators aren’t the only ones stuck cleaning up Waymo’s messes. Emergency responders are also having to swoop in when the blundering robotaxis muck up traffic — and they’re starting to get fed up at having to act as glorified “roadside assistance” for the vehicles, according to reporting by SFGate. Mary Ellen Carroll, executive director of San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management, warned that the frequency that police and firefighters have to respond to immobilized Waymos was becoming a public safety issue. “What has started to happen is that our public safety officers and responders are having to be the ones to physically move [the cars],” Carroll said in testimony during a public hearing on Monday. “In a sense, they’re becoming a default roadside assistance for these vehicles, which we do not think is tenable.” The hearing was held to discuss the chaos caused by Waymo’s San Francisco fleet when the city suffered a power outage in late …

In Israel, a unique network of volunteer first responders

Israeli authorities say the number of ballistic missiles targeting the country is declining. Since the start of the war, there have been 10 deaths, 8 serious injuries, and nearly 400 minor injuries. To treat them in record time, Israel benefits from a network of volunteer first responders that is unique in the world. FRANCE 24’s correspondent Claire Duhamel accompanied them for a day. World Trade Center responders with PTSD show signs of accelerated brain aging

World Trade Center responders with PTSD show signs of accelerated brain aging

A new study published in Translational Psychiatry has found that post-traumatic stress disorder is associated with accelerated biological aging in the brain. Researchers found that World Trade Center responders with PTSD had brains that appeared approximately three years older than their chronological age compared to responders without the disorder. This research suggests that the condition involves tangible structural changes to the brain that persist long after the initial trauma. The health impacts of the September 11, 2001 attacks extend well beyond the immediate physical injuries sustained at Ground Zero. Many responders who assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts developed chronic psychological conditions. PTSD remains particularly prevalent in this population. Previous studies have linked the disorder to various markers of accelerated aging in the body, such as changes in immune function and inflammation. The specific impact of the disorder on the biological aging of the brain itself has remained less clear. Determining how PTSD affects brain structure is necessary for understanding long-term health risks. Individuals with the condition face a higher statistical likelihood of developing …

L.A. restaurants providing food, shelter to fire evacuees and first responders

L.A. County is consumed in smoke as multiple wildfires across the Palisades, Pasadena, Altadena and Sylmar remain mostly uncontained, with thousands of acres burned and high-speed winds predicted to exacerbate conditions throughout the day. As with past natural disasters, L.A.’s chef and restaurant communities are stepping up to provide assistance to those affected by the fires. Humanitarian chef José Andrés has already deployed a relief team from his World Central Kitchen organization to provide sandwiches and water to those in need. Yeastie Boy Bagels and its fleet of food trucks are giving away free bagels at evacuation centers, and other local spots are following suit. Here is our growing list of L.A. food spots staying open to support those displaced or affected by ongoing fires, including one Santa Monica restaurant that’s offering 10% lunch and dinner discounts throughout the week and a Virgil Village walk-up window that’s providing free food to evacuees and first responders. This list will be updated as new information is provided. This article is provided free of charge to keep our …
