US says its forces ready to restart combat if Iran doesn’t agree to a deal

WASHINGTON: US forces in the Middle East are postured to restart combat operations immediately if Iran doesn’t agree to a peace deal, top American military officials said on Thursday (Apr 16). As part of a campaign to pressure Tehran to sign an agreement, US military forces are mounting a blockade on all ships seeking to enter or leave Iran. “You, Iran, can choose a prosperous future, a golden bridge, and we hope that you do for the people of Iran,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told a Pentagon briefing. “But if Iran chooses poorly, then they will have a blockade and bombs dropping on infrastructure, power and energy.” The Trump administration expressed optimism on Wednesday about reaching a deal to end the war with Iran, while also warning of increasing economic pressure against Tehran if it remains defiant. Hegseth, addressing the Iranian leadership, said: “This is not a fair fight, and we know what military assets you are moving and where you are moving them to.” General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, …

California Sues US Dept of Energy Over Sable Oil Pipeline Restart

California Sues US Dept of Energy Over Sable Oil Pipeline Restart

March 23 (Reuters) – California Attorney General Rob Bonta said on Monday he has sued the U.S. Department of Energy to stop it from using a Cold War-era law to restart the long-disputed Sable Offshore pipeline system linking the Santa Ynez ‌offshore platform to California refineries. U.S. ‌Secretary of Energy Chris Wright earlier this month restarted the pipelines using powers granted to him by President Donald Trump through an executive order that invoked the Defense Production Act to supersede state laws. “We won’t let this outrageous federal overreach go without a fight,” Bonta said in a press conference Monday. Bonta alleged Wright’s restart order violates state law, state court orders and a settlement approved by a federal court.  Spokespersons for the U.S. Department of Energy and Sable Offshore did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit, which was filed in San Francisco federal court. California is asking the court to rule that Wright’s restart order violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution, and to prohibit the Energy Department from relying on the order to …

California Sues the Trump Administration Over Plans to Restart Oil Pipelines Along the Coast

California Sues the Trump Administration Over Plans to Restart Oil Pipelines Along the Coast

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California sued the federal government Friday for approving a Texas-based company’s plans to restart two oil pipelines along the state’s coast, escalating a fight over the Trump administration’s removal of regulatory barriers to offshore oil drilling for the first time in decades. The state oversees the pipelines that run through Santa Barbara and Kern counties, said Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta. “The federal administration has no right to usurp California’s regulatory authority,” he said at a news conference. “We’re taking them to court to draw a line in the sand and to protect our coast, beaches and communities from potentially hazardous pipelines.” But the U.S. Transportation Department agency that approved Sable’s plan pushed back on the lawsuit. “Restarting the Las Flores Pipeline will bring much needed American energy to a state with the highest gas prices in the country,” said a spokesperson with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Sable did not respond for comment on the lawsuit. Trump signed an executive order on the first day of his second …

Eurostar services to restart after tunnel disruption caused travel chaos – POLITICO

Eurostar services to restart after tunnel disruption caused travel chaos – POLITICO

Earlier in the day, multiple issues caused transport chaos for thousands of people traveling ahead of New Year celebrations. “Due to a problem with the overhead power supply and a subsequent failed Le Shuttle train the Channel Tunnel is currently closed. Unfortunately, this means we have no choice but to suspend all services today until further notice,” the company said in an earlier update on its website. Le Shuttle, the rail service that transports vehicles and passengers through the Channel Tunnel, was experiencing delays of up to three-and-a-half hours, according to a message on its website. Eurostar had urged passengers not to travel to stations, which include Brussels-Midi, Gare du Nord in Paris and St Pancras in London. British media reported there were traffic jams in front of the tunnel terminal in Folkestone, England and stations crowded with stranded passengers in London and Paris. Eurostar denied reports about stranded train passengers in the tunnel. “It is a broken shuttle (LeShuttle) that has now been moved out of the tunnel,” a spokesperson said. Zaporizhzhia Power Plant Could Restart in 18 Months Once the War Ends, Head Says

MOSCOW, Dec 29 (Reuters) – The ‌head of the Russian-controlled ‌Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine said on Monday the facility could restart ‍power generation by the middle of 2027 if the war concludes in the near future. “If this (the end of the conflict) happens tomorrow, we will be ready to start up in mid-2027,” Ramil Galiyev was ‌cited as saying by Russia’s RIA state news agency. The ‌nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, ‍has been under Russian control since March 2022, when Russian forces overran much of southeastern Ukraine. It is not currently producing electricity but relies on external power to keep the nuclear material cool and avoid a meltdown. Power line repairs are currently underway at the plant under the watch of a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and are expected to last a few days. Galiyev said “serious issues” at the plant would have to be addressed before it could go online, including replenishing the cooling pond and preparing railway tracks. Both Russia and Ukraine regularly accuse one another …
