China restricts some overseas-incorporated firms from Hong Kong IPOs

Beijing is restricting certain Chinese companies incorporated overseas from seeking initial public offerings in Hong Kong, requesting them to change their domicile back to China before going public, according to China’s securities regulator. The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said on Tuesday (Mar 17) some red-chip firms, companies that are registered abroad, but hold assets and businesses in China via equity ownership, received the guidance to unwind the structure recently. “Regulators at home and abroad have long scrutinised red-chip vehicles given their opaque shareholding structures and relatively high compliance risks,” the CSRC said in a statement responding to Reuters queries. Sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters earlier on Tuesday that the CSRC had requested a number of IPO candidates in recent days that they should not list in Hong Kong unless they overhaul their corporate structure. It was not immediately clear how many IPO candidates have received such guidance. The CSRC said it has since December allowed five red-chip companies to complete their filings in order to list offshore. FOCUS ON RED CHIPS …

UFL Restricts Punting Beyond 50-Yard Line and Makes 60-Plus Field Goals Worth 4 Points

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The UFL won’t allow punts after a team crosses the 50-yard line until late in each half and is making all field goals 60 yards or longer worth four points in the innovative spring football league’s latest rule changes. The provisions announced Tuesday include the elimination of the tush push, which technically means players behind the quarterback can’t push him toward the line of scrimmage right after the snap. The UFL’s tweaks on rules have gained visibility ever since the NFL adopted radical changes to the kickoff two years ago. The UFL is adjusting its kickoff rules, too. The eight-team league opens March 27. The kickoff team’s players will line up at the opponent’s 45-yard line instead of the 40, and the receiving team’s blockers will move 5 yards in the same direction as well, creating more room for the returners. The coverage team and the blockers can’t move until the ball is caught or lands in a designated zone. “It is a tremendous source of pride,” UFL head of officials …

US judge restricts federal agents over Minnesota protests after Trump says no reason for Insurrection Act

A man walks by a series of posters memorializing Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 16, 2026. SCOTT OLSON / AFP A US judge on Friday, January 16, restricted federal agents from interfering with peaceful protesters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after President Donald Trump said there was no immediate need to invoke the Insurrection Act over the demonstrations. In the 83-page order, US District Judge Katherine Menendez ordered immigration agents to dial back their aggressive tactics, barring the detention or arrest of peaceful protesters and drivers, and using pepper-spray against demonstrators. The order gives the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) current operation in the northern US city 72 hours to come into compliance, and follows two incidents where federal agents opened fire, killing one person and injuring another in the span of a week. In a separate legal move that could inflame the standoff between the White House and Minnesota elected officials, CBS News reported that the Justice Department was investigating Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for impeding federal officers. They …

Under federal law, members of Congress have the right to make unannounced visits to Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities. A D.C. federal court ruling affirmed this last month, saying it applies to facilities that are funded by regular congressional appropriations. But in a Jan. 8 memo from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem obtained by NPR, Noem instructs her staff that visits should be requested at least seven days in advance. She said the detention facilities are run with money …

X restricts Grok’s image generation to paying subscribers only after drawing the world’s ire

Elon Musk’s AI company has restricted Grok’s controversial AI image-generation feature to only paying subscribers on X, after the tool invited heavy criticism from across the world for letting users generate sexualized and nude images of women and children. In replies to users on Friday, Grok said only paying subscribers on X would be able to generate and edit images on the platform. Notably, these limits do not apply to the Grok app, which, at the time of publication was letting anyone generate pictures without having to pay for a subscription. Initially available to anyone with daily limits, Grok’s image-generation feature allowed users to upload anyone’s picture and ask it to edit it or generate a sexualized or nude version. What ensued was a veritable flood of non-consensual sexualized images of children, actors, models and prominent figures, drawing the ire of multiple nations. X and Musk have both publicly denounced the use of the tool to produce such images, writing that the company would stick to its policies against posting illegal content on the social …
