FDA announces first approval of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adults

Flavored disposable e-cigarettes are seen in this illustration taken July 18, 2022. Shannon Stapleton | Reuters The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday announced its first authorization of fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes intended for adult smokers, a major policy shift that comes after months of appeals to President Donald Trump from the vaping industry. The decision is certain to be opposed by health groups and parent organizations that have long pointed to flavors as the driver behind underage vaping in the U.S. But the federal action comes as teen vaping rates have dropped to a 10-year low and manufacturers have pushed the Republican administration to loosen restrictions on their products. Vaping companies have long made the case that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking among adults, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The battery-powered devices have been sold in the U.S. since 2007, but their potential benefits have been overshadowed for years by uptake among middle and high school students. The newly authorized …

Trump favors companies that don’t seek tariff refund

Trump favors companies that don’t seek tariff refund

President Donald Trump on Tuesday told CNBC that he will gratefully “remember” U.S. companies that do not seek refunds for the tariffs he unilaterally imposed, which the Supreme Court later ruled were illegal. Trump’s comment on “Squawk Box” came a day after U.S. Customs and Border Protection opened a portal for importers to seek more than $160 billion in potential refunds for the so-called IEEPA tariffs. He was asked about a number of large companies, among them Apple and Amazon, that have not filed requests for refunds for the tariffs they paid, potentially because they are worried about “offending” Trump. Asked if he would find it offensive for them to seek a refund, Trump said, “Brilliant if they don’t do that.” “Actually, if they don’t do that, they’ve got to know me very well,” he said. “I’m very honored by what you just said.” “If they don’t do that, I’ll remember them,” Trump said. Trump tariffs fall, but trade war impacts linger

Trump tariffs fall, but trade war impacts linger

A year after President Donald Trump declared his “liberation day” and imposed sweeping tariffs on imports, kicking off a wave of economic and political uncertainty, some companies are still feeling the effects. While some industries have emerged largely unscathed — having weathered twists and turns of several tariff iterations — others, such as retail, automotive, consumer packaged goods and pharmaceuticals, are navigating a new reality in global supply chains. “Leadership at U.S. corporations really had to think about where we buy from versus whether we can import or not,” said Venky Ramesh, a supply chain expert with AlixPartners. “Around 80% to 85% of the costs were absorbed domestically, meaning either the U.S. corporations had to take the hit, or they passed it on to the customers, or a mix of both.” On April 2, 2025, in the White House’s Rose Garden, Trump announced broad country-by-country tariffs, as well as a 10% baseline levy on countries that weren’t specifically listed in that declaration. Those tariff policies fluctuated wildly over the following months as Trump made deals …

Congress contemplates its role on tariffs after Supreme Court decision

Congress contemplates its role on tariffs after Supreme Court decision

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) gives a thumbs up as he arrives for a House Republican Conference meeting at the U.S. Capitol on September 10, 2024 in Washington, DC. Kent Nishimura | Getty Images President Donald Trump says he does not need Congress to impose tariffs, but his recent attempts to impose new import duties could trigger difficult votes for Republicans ahead of midterms. And Democrats are vowing to disrupt attempts to extend Trump’s trade policy. Shortly after the Supreme Court spiked a majority of Trump’s tariffs on Friday, the president doubled-down and issued another round using Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act. That statute caps rates at 15% and requires congressional authorization for an extension beyond 150 days, creating the potential for a difficult vote on an unpopular issue for congressional Republicans in the midst of election season. “I’m freaked out about it. Because every poll shows that American voters are against tariffs at a 2-to-1 ratio. The president has latched on to a very unpopular policy,” said Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., one of …

Congressional Democrats seek to force refunds

Congressional Democrats seek to force refunds

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) speaks at a press conference following the Democratic weekly policy lunch on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Dec.9, 2025. Annabelle Gordon | Reuters A group of Senate Democrats released legislation on Monday that would mandate refunds of tariffs paid under President Donald Trump’s higher duties that the Supreme Court struck down on Friday. The legislation, led by Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Ed Markey of Massachusetts, follows the Supreme Court’s momentous 6-3 decision on Friday ruling against a majority of Trump’s tariffs. “Trump’s illegal tax scheme has already done lasting damage to American families, small businesses and manufacturers who have been hammered by wave after wave of new Trump tariffs,” Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, said in a statement. “Senate Democrats will continue fighting to rein in Donald Trump’s price-hiking trade and economic policies. A crucial first step is helping people who need it most, by putting money back in the pockets of small businesses and manufacturers as soon as …

Les Wexner congressional deposition underway

This Sept. 19, 2014 file photo shows retail mogul Leslie Wexner, at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. Wexner is severing his last ties with the retail empire that he founded in 1963. Jay LaPrete | AP Billionaire Leslie Wexner said during a congressional deposition Wednesday that he had virtually no social relationship with Jeffrey Epstein — but the House Oversight Committee’s top-ranking Democrat called that claim “bogus.” “I do not believe when Mr. Wexner says that he did not have a personal relationship or a friendly relationship” with the notorious sex offender, Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., told reporters in Ohio during a break in the closed-door proceedings. Garcia also sharply criticized the Department of Justice after hearing from Wexner that he has not been contacted by the FBI on Epstein-related matters. “What the hell is going on? That is shameful,” Garcia said. The deposition of the 88-year-old retail billionaire, which resumed after the break, is occurring weeks after the DOJ released millions of additional files revealing new links between Epstein and …

Italy says U.S. sharply reduced proposed pasta tariffs after a review

Packages of pasta imported from Italy are seen in a supermarket in Houston, Texas, on Nov. 12, 2025. Ronaldo Schemidt | AFP | Getty Images Italy’s foreign ministry said on Thursday the United States had sharply lowered proposed duties on several Italian pasta makers following a reassessment of their U.S. activities. In October, the United States said that 13 Italian pasta companies would face an extra 92% duty — on top of the regular 15% rate on most EU imports — from January 2026, accusing two producers in particular, La Molisana and Garofalo, of selling pasta at unfairly low prices. The United States collected more $200 billion in tariffs in 2025 as a result of new duties, according to Customs and Border Protection. However, after a review, the U.S. Department of Commerce cut the tariff for La Molisana to 2.26%, while Garofalo’s rate was set at 13.98%, the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement. The remaining 11 producers, which were not individually examined in the review, face a tariff of 9.09%. “The recalculation of …
