Congress, retailers want to rebuild national parks. Road tolls might pay

Danny Lehman | The Image Bank | Getty Images Congress is trying to come up with more money to give the aging national parks a facelift in honor of the country’s 250th birthday this year. President Donald Trump talks about the importance of federal facilities looking good, while his budget proposal slashed funding for the National Park Service. Republican lawmakers are searching for revenue sources including establishing tolls on federally operated roads in the Washington area used daily by tens of thousands of commuters and by hiking fees to visit national parks for visitors from outside the U.S. Democrats say putting tolls on roads that intersect with the Capital Beltway is an untenable solution and that finding new money to fund park overhauls is not necessary since it’s already the government’s responsibility to maintain the parks. Lawmakers are racing to pass the successor to the Great American Outdoors Act, or GAOA, a law Trump signed during his first term to clear the National Park Service‘s backlog …

Ministers warn petrol retailers over prices in meeting | UK News

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has warned petrol retailers of a “shared obligation” to keep prices down for motorists amid soaring prices and war in the Middle East. The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) had threatened to pull out of the Downing Street meeting with Ms Reeves and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband hours before, citing “inflammatory language”. That language had led to an increase in abuse against forecourt workers, the PRA said. The meeting only went ahead after assurances from the Treasury that it would be held largely in private, with the PRA’s Gordon Balmer saying the government did not apologise for its language. M&S announces dozens of cafe closures across the UK in major restructure – full list

Marks & Spencer is closing a number of cafes across the UK, with the spaces to be repurposed for uses that better suit the customer experience. While none of the M&S London branches is affected by the closures, the news will likely be disappointing to many cafe lovers across the country. Often seen as a spot for weary customers to take a break from their shopping and recharge, M&S cafes offer a range of hot and cold drinks and delicious breakfast and lunch items. According to the latest announcements, 14 cafes have already closed or are set to close imminently to make way for new customer services across the UK. It’s unclear at this point what services will replace the cafe spaces, but one regional manager appeared to suggest they’ll make way for more “product choice.” Addressing the cafe closures, M&S regional manager in Congleton, Katie Whelan, said: “We know many of our customers want to be able to shop a wider range of M&S Food.” “That’s why, after reviewing our Congleton store, we are …

Retailers Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop on brink of administration | Money News

The retailers Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) are on the brink of collapse, putting more than 2,000 jobs at risk in a bleak start to the new year for the British high street. Sky News has learnt that the two chains are understood to be filing notices of intention to appoint administrators just days after the conclusion of the crucial Christmas trading period. The filings will buy both Claire’s and TOFS temporary breathing space from creditors, underlining Britain’s fragile retail environment as the industry’s biggest players prepare to report publicly on their festive sales performance. Money latest: Tesco revives value stripes The two chains, which between them trade from just over 300 stores and employ about 2,500 people, are both owned by the investment firm Modella Capital. It snapped up both TOFS, which was already on the brink of collapse, and Claire’s, which had called in administrators, in separate deals over the course of several months last year. Sources said that a combination of government policy, with a significantly increased tax burden on …

Facewatch: The controversial tech that retailers have deployed to tackle shoplifting and violence | Money News

The Christmas period is upon us, and goods are flying off the shelves, but for some reason, the tills are not ringing as loudly as they should be. Across the country, the five-finger discount is being used with such frequency that retailers are taking action into their own hands. With concerns about the police response to shoplifting, many are now resorting to controversial facial recognition technology to catch culprits before they strike. Sainsbury’s, Budgens and Sports Direct are among the high-street businesses that have signed up to Facewatch, a cloud-based facial recognition security system that scans faces as they enter a store. Those images are then compared to a database of known offenders and, if a match is found, an alert is set off to warn the business that a shoplifter has entered the premises. It comes as official figures show shoplifting offences rose by 13% in the year to June, reaching almost 530,000 incidents. Figures reported in August showed more than 80% result in no charge. At the same time, retailers are reporting more …
