Before the Met Gala 2026, Revisit 10 Years of Met Gala Fashion and Themes

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Rihanna first made fashion history at the Met Gala. While she had previously attended the ultra-exclusive event, it was the yellow, fur-trimmed embroidered gown with a lengthy train by designer Guo Pei, that she wore for “China: Through the Looking Glass” in 2015 that instantly secured her spot on best dressed-lists the world over. “I can’t really walk in it without any help—but it’s so worth it. I love this dress so much! It’s Chinese couture and it’s made by Guo Pei. It’s handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make. I found it online,” she told Vanity Fair at the time. “I was researching Chinese couture on the Internet and I found it.” A testament to just how inspiring the Met Gala’s theme can be. As the countdown to Met Gala 2026 is underway, take a look back at ten years of extravagance, grandeur and history-making fashion. On Passover, some Sephardic Jews revisit not only the story of their ancestors, but also their Ladino language

On Passover, some Sephardic Jews revisit not only the story of their ancestors, but also their Ladino language

(The Conversation) — When Passover arrives each spring, Jewish families around the world gather at their tables to retell a story passed down for thousands of years. At ritual dinners known as Seders, they recount the Exodus, the biblical story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt – asking questions, singing songs and explaining the meaning behind symbolic foods like matzo. In the United States, most Seders move between English, Hebrew and Aramaic, which was once the lingua franca of much of the ancient Middle East. In some homes, another language joins the table: Ladino, a form of Judeo-Spanish that Jews carried across the Mediterranean after being expelled from Spain in 1492. Multilingualism has long been part of Jewish tradition. For Sephardic Jews who spent centuries in Ottoman and Muslim lands after their forced exodus from Spain – or Sepharad, as it is called in Hebrew – Ladino has played a central role at Passover. For many families today, the holiday provides a rare opportunity to hear the now-endangered language spoken aloud – a …

Before the Winter Olympics 2026, Revisit the Last Time the Games Were in Cortina

Before the Winter Olympics 2026, Revisit the Last Time the Games Were in Cortina

In the days leading up to the Winter Olympics 2026, we remember that exactly 70 years ago, the town of Cortina played host to the global games. Back in 1956, this small Italian town welcomed the world’s greatest athletes to compete in the heart of its mountains. In a highly symbolic gesture, the 2026 competition will move back to the Dolomites, on the same territory, for an even splashier Olympic games. This time, Cortina is co-hosting the Games with Milan, combining the ultra-urban dolce vita ethos with Alpine scenery. For the French, the 1956 Winter Olympics remain a bitter memory: not a single of their people earned a medal in competition. Seventy years later, France is determined to change history and hoist the flag of their homeland on the top step of the podium. Before the big event kicks off, take a look back at 22 vintage photos from the 1956 Cortina Olympics in this gallery, originally published by Vanity Fair France. Source link

MTV Rewind Lets You Revisit 40,000 Music Videos & Commercials from the Golden Age of MTV

MTV Rewind Lets You Revisit 40,000 Music Videos & Commercials from the Golden Age of MTV

MTV still exists. At least, it still exists in the United States, or in certain of that country’s markets, for the time being. A flurry of premature obituaries recently blew through the internet after the announcement that the network had shut down in other parts of the world, Europe included. But even there, some expressed the sentiment that MTV had already died long before. And indeed, in the U.S., where it originally launched, asking who remembers when MTV actually used to play music videos has been a common lament for decades, aired even by generations too young to remember those days themselves. But members of any generation can now relive them — or live them for the first time — through a new site called MTV Rewind. The first music video that greets the visitor is The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” and appropriately so, since it inaugurated MTV itself when it went live on August 1st, 1981. What follows are all the rest of the videos played on that first day, like Phil Collins’ …
