Man missing in Loire River as record rains lash France

Man missing in Loire River as record rains lash France

A man has gone missing in the Loire River in the flood hit west of France, an official said, as the country on Wednesday marked a record-breaking streak of 35 consecutive days of rain. National weather service Meteo-France said the country was experiencing its longest series of rainy days since measurements began in 1959, breaking the 2023 record. Four departments in western France were placed under red alert over the risk of flooding, with officials expecting the situation to worsen with the arrival of Storm Pedro, which is poised to batter swathes of western Europe. The mayor of Bordeaux, Pierre Hurmic, activated the southwestern city’s emergency plan, the first time since record floods in 1999. In the western town of Chalonnes-sur-Loire, which is located on the left bank of the Loire, a man went missing on Tuesday evening after his canoe capsized, said senior official Francois Pesneau. “We are deploying resources, but there is objectively very little chance of finding this person,” he said, citing strong currents and cold water. Where River Ryan and Gavin Stone figure in Dodgers’ pitching plans

PHOENIX — In the backfields of Camelback Ranch, the Dodgers’ River Ryan and Blake Snell stayed behind to field grounders and practice throws to second. After a few dropped balls by Ryan during his transition, the two-time Cy Young winner talked it over at the mound with the young pitcher. It was a typical scene you’d see in the early days of spring training, the extra work to dial in fundamentals. But for the 27-year-old Ryan, it’s part of the journey in his return from Tommy John surgery. Ryan got a taste of the majors in July 2024, making his debut against the San Francisco Giants with 5 ⅓ innings and giving up one unearned run. He showed promise with his high-velocity fastball and swing-and-miss slider/curveball combination. But during his fourth start on Aug. 10 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he exited the game in the fifth inning with what was diagnosed as a torn UCL — his season done after pitching 20 ⅓ innings with 18 strikeouts and a 1.33 ERA. Eighteen months later, Ryan’s goals are …
