A bad case of the baby blues turns into a gory fight for survival in Nightborn (Yön Lapsi), Finnish writer-director Hanna Bergholm’s worthy follow-up to her well-received 2022 debut, Hatching. Like that movie, which combined horror and fantasy tropes with f***ed-up family dynamics, the director’s second feature focuses on a couple in the aftermath of their child’s birth — an already anxiety-ridden event that’s compounded many times over by the fact that their baby boy is some kind of bloodsucking abomination of nature. A pretty unsuspecting element of Hanna Bergholm’s filmography lured Rupert Grint onto Nightborn. The British actor has kept a low profile since his career-making turn as the red-haired Ron Weasley in Warner Bros’ Harry Potter films. For a decade, he was a fixture of global cinema; a wand-wielding Gryffindor who became, alongside fellow Hogwarts alums Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, the child star of all child stars. In 2011, as the movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s books drew to a spectacular, box office-smashing close, only a minority of people would have been unable to place Grint’s English accent and mischievous smirk. The 37-year-old has toned things down, though he’s certainly kept the bar high through regular team-ups with M. Night Shyamalan on the likes of TV series Servant and 2023’s Knock at the Cabin. Alan Rickman’s widow, Rima Horton, reflected on her late husband’s legacy in a rare comment for the former politician, who first met the Harry Potter star in 1965. Alan passed away in January 2016 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, which has one of the lowest survival rates of any cancer as it often goes undetected until the advanced stages. Rima spoke to BBC Breakfast about Alan’s private health battle on Tuesday while promoting a special charity prize draw to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. “He had so much more to give. There were so many more things he could have done,” she said in the interview.
