The Equality Act is an essential safeguard against discrimination, and it should matter to everyone – Humanists UK

Humanists UK believes the Equality Act is a vital piece of legislation that supports the fair and equal society that humanists strive to achieve. This includes legal protections against discrimination on the grounds of your religion and belief, which cuts across almost all the campaigning work Humanists UK does. Bank of Korea signals end to easing cycle after standing pat to safeguard FX stability

SEOUL, Jan 15 : South Korea’s central bank on Thursday signalled an end to its current easing cycle after keeping its benchmark interest rate unchanged, prioritising financial stability in its first policy meeting of the year as the won hovered around 16-year lows. Geopolitical tensions and fund outflows have intensified risks to growth and stability in Asia’s fourth-biggest economy, particularly as policymakers have struggled to slow a slide in the local currency. “I can undeniably say that the forex market situation was an important factor in coming to today’s (policy rate) decision,” Governor Rhee Chang-yong said in a press conference after the bank’s monetary policy board voted to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 2.50 per cent. “The FX rate stabilization measures (recently announced) bolstered the won by more than 40 won against the dollar but it is weakening again, so we need to stay on alert,” the BOK chief said. All 34 economists polled by Reuters had expected the bank to stand pat. Having delivered 100 basis points of cumulative cuts since October …

UK cybersecurity action plan to safeguard digital public services

The UK Government has unveiled a major new push to strengthen UK cybersecurity, committing more than £210m to protect public services as they move increasingly online. The Government Cyber Action Plan, published today, sets out how ministers intend to defend essential systems against a rising tide of cyber threats while ensuring citizens can use digital services with confidence. From paying taxes and applying for benefits to booking healthcare appointments, public services are being redesigned for the digital age. The government believes this shift could unlock up to £45bn in productivity gains by cutting paperwork, reducing call centre backlogs and allowing people to access support without repeatedly sharing the same information across departments. But those gains, officials acknowledge, depend on trust. Speaking on the plan, Digital Government Minister Ian Murray said: “Cyber attacks can take vital public services offline in minutes – disrupting our digital services and our very way of life. “This plan sets a new bar to bolster the defences of our public sector, putting cyber-criminals on notice that we are going further and faster to protect the UK’s businesses and public services …
